MASS SCHEDULE
T h i sSunday, we celebrate the feast of the Baptism
of the Lord. In today's Gospel, as in the other Gospel accounts of Jesus' baptism,we hear John the Baptist address the confusion of the people who thought that John might be the Messiah. Insponse, John contrasts the baptism that he performs with the Baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist
ays that he has baptized with water, but that someone will come and baptize with the Holy Spirit. The type of bap-sm that John performed was not yet a Christian Baptism; it was a preparation for Christian Baptism throughhich sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received.
The baptism of Jesus is reported in each of the three Synoptic GospelsMatthew, Mark, and Luke. Clearly, was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community. The Evangelists Mark and
uke report the story from Jesus' perspective; the voice from heaven is addressed to Jesus. Compare this to Mat-ew's Gospel in which the voice from heaven speaks to everyone. In Luke, however, the Holy Spirit descends
pon Jesus during his time of prayer after his baptism. Through his Gospel, Luke will show Jesus to be a person ofrayer who withdraws regularly from the crowds and his disciples to pray to his Father.
The baptism of Jesus is considered a manifestation of God in Jesus, another epiphany. On this, the last dayf the Christmas season, our Gospel reveals to us Jesus' relation to God: the son of Mary and Joseph is also God'swn Son. In Luke's Gospel, all three members of the Trinity are manifested here: God the Father in the voice, theoly Spirit descending, and Jesus the Son. At the beginning of his Gospel, Luke is communicating to us importantformation about the identity of Jesus. In the verses that follow, Luke lists the genealogy of Jesus, tracing Jesus'
ncestry back to the first person, Adam, who is also identified as the son of God. We, the children of Adam andve, are again made children of God through Baptism. Retrieved from http://www.loyolapress.com/
Special Thanks to the Filipino Communityt. Michaels Filipino community coordinated a great religious celebration last Saturday Janu-ry 5th, 2013 to honor their patron El Santo Nino. A large number of members of the Fili-no community displayed their Santo Nino statues during the religious service. Father Joseph
essed the statues with Holy Water at the end of the liturgy. The Mass concluded with a pro-ession around our chapel. This was a beautiful procession of faith! An outstanding socialvent with the best of the Filipino taste followed Fr. Josephs final blessing. We would like to
hank the St. Michaels Filipino community for sharing this wonderful tradition with all of us.special thanks to Elsie Labrador and Jun David for coordinating and organizing this beauti-
ul celebration. We are looking forward to celebrating El Santo Nino next year again!

alming the StormMiracles of Jesus. Written by Pete Millertrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com
miracle is a phenomenal or supernatural event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers, and more often than not cannoplained by the laws of nature. God never operates contrary to His Word or to the laws of nature which He has established, but He has the prerogative to sude them.In three of the four Gospels, the writers record an incident that caused Jesus 12 disciples to be astonished and afraid. W hile crossing the Sea of Galilbulent storm put them in real peril. Jesus, strangely, was sound asleep. When the disciples awakened Him, He told the storm to stop, and it Some scholars assert that the Matthew episode is different from the event recorded in Mark and Luke, because the tempest recorded in Matthew precus calling His 12, while the Mark and Luke accounts follow Jesus calling them. Further, the Greek word for tempest in Matthew is seismos, meaning a s, and translated earthquake in 13 other places in the New Testament, while the Greek word for windstorm in Mark and Luke is lailaps, meaning a windn storm, more like a hurricane.Other differences between the story about miracle of Jesus calming the storm in different Gospels are not being mentioned in this article because this emhere is on the miracle itself. Certainly Jesus could have calmed two storms. There are no contradictions in the Word of God. All Scripture is given by insn of God, as 2 Timothy 3:16 states. In the Matthew 8:23-27 account, Jesus and His disciples got into a boat. Being fatigued, Jesus was asleep. It is written that suddenly a great tempest athe sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. His disciples wakened Him and said,Lord, save us! We are perishing! His words to
re, Why are you fearful, O you of little faith? He then got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. The disciples were in d said to each other, Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?Jesus asked His men why they were fearful. The word translated fearful means cowardly or intimidated. They were losing their nerve, panicking, or com
glued, so to speak. Jesus questioned their faith, and then rebuked the winds. The wind and waves immediately became tranIn the account in Mark 4:37-41, Jesus said, Peace, be still! The wind ceased and there was a stillness on the water. Then He asked, Why are you so f? How is it that you have no faith? The Gospel of Luke is essentially the same, but Jesus question isWhere is your faith? In each Gospel account, ction is the same. Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?Jesus Christ spoke to a raging windstorm, and it immediately stopped. He wasnt afraid or worried about His safety. He knew Gods Word and knew was destined to do, how He would ultimately die, and that His life and the lives of His men were not in jeopardy that day on the water. Jesus knew
urce of the storm and the adversarys intent to startle and paralyze with fear. Jesus knew the authority and the power He h ad and He used it responsiblyth wisdom. The disciples had already seen many miraculous healings, seen many people set free from demonic oppression, and even seen a man raised from the dein (Luke 7:11-15). Jesus had given them power and authority to heal sickness and cast out devils (Mark 3:15). There was no reason at this point to be fried. Jesus used the reaction of His disciples to challenge them and teach them. Dont panic. Dont go to pieces when the win d starts blowing. Fear is couoductive and fear defeats faith. Even faith as small as a mustard seed can literally move mountains when it is focused, not on self, but on God and His mi
lity.

Movie ReviewThree Kings Day at St. MichaelsLast Sunday, our Catholic faith celebrated the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by three wise men alsoknown as The Three Kings. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the three wise men found the di-vine child by following the North Star across the desert for twelve days to Bethlehem. Melchior, Casparand Balthazar who represented Europe, Arabia and Africa respectively travelled from far away topresent baby Jesus with three symbolic gifts, incense, myrrh and frankincense.
After many hours of travelling across the world, the three kings found Fort Gordon and decided tovisit this humble place and the Catholic children who attended religious education (CCD) last Sunday.Due to security matters such as lack of insurance and valid camel registration, the Three Kings wereonly able to bring candy to the children at CCD. We suggested them to update the information, so nextyear they can present the children with toys. Thank you Mrs. Judy Kriegel for taking these photos!
