Guest PerformersSoprano Catherine Abele received her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from the University of Manitoba, under the tutelage of Canadian soprano, Tracy Dahl. She went on to receive her Master of Music degree in Voice from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio, the same institution where she is now a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice and Vocal Pedagogy. Ms. Abele was a district winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and took the top vocal prize at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition.

Recent engagements include La Belle Époque, a shared 2013/14 Department of Music Mainstage Concert featuring mélodies by Fauré, Debussy and Ravel, in collaboration with The Aldeburgh Connection’s Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata in a performance of A Country House Weekend, as guest soloist with the Richard Eaton Singers in Handel’s Israel in Egypt, and as a member of the world’s foremost school of German Lieder, the Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden, Austria. Additional performances this season included Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10 with The Enterprise String Quartet.

Ms. Abele is an active vocal adjudicator in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. She served as Instructor of Voice, Lyric Diction and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Alberta’s Department of Music from 2009 until 2014, and her students from that program have been accepted into opera training programs throughout North America, including Opera NUOVA, Opera on the Avalon, Cowtown Opera Company and Opera Neo in San Diego.

Elizabeth Turnbull, mezzo-soprano, has been hailed by the critics as ‘a revelation’, with ‘controlled passion, acute timing and glistening presence.’ Her many and varied credits include appearances with major orchestras and opera companies across North America.

Her roles range from the Baroque (Juno in Semele), to the Romantic (Carmen), modern (Augusta Tabor in the Canadian premiere of The Ballad of Baby Doe) and new (creating the role of Maria Picariello in Filumena). Concert experience has included the oratorios of Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn and Saint Saëns, the symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler, the songs of Brahms, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov, as well as numerous new music compositions.

Ms. Turnbull is the Voice Area Coordinator at the University of Alberta’s Department of Music, where she has been teaching voice for three years. She has also been an instructor for the past two summers at Opera NUOVA and for the past four summers at Opera on the AVALON.

Conductor Leonard Ratzlaff is a professor of choral music at the University of Alberta, where he supervises one of Canada’s most established graduate choral conducting programs. He directs the University of Alberta Madrigal Singers, a group that has distinguished itself both nationally and internationally through its performances, competition successes and CD recordings.

As the music director of the Richard Eaton Singers, Edmonton’s symphonic chorus, he has conducted many of the major choral master works with orchestra, collaborating with the Edmonton Symphony and the Alberta Baroque Ensemble.

In 2014-15, while Professor Ratzlaff is on sabbatical, the Madrigal Singers are under the direction of Sara Brooks. Sara, in her third year as a doctoral student in choral conducting at University of Alberta, received her Master’s degree in Piano Performance at University of Ottawa, and while there she founded her own choir, the Capital Chamber Choir, with the specific focus of performing Canadian choral music. She is also the assistant conductor of the Richard Eaton Singers, and recently conducted their fall concert in music by Schubert and Vivaldi.

Magnificat

Magnificat anima mea Dominum

Fecit potentiam in bracchio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.

Amen.

Leonardo Leo

My soul doth magnify the Lord,

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

He hath shewed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.

Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

As it was, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Psalm 109 Dixit Dominus, RV 595

Dixit Dominus Domino meo:Sede a dextris meis.

Donec ponam inimicos tuos, scabellum pedum tuorum. Dominus a dextris tuis,Confregit in die irae suae reges. Judicabit in nationibus, implebit ruinas:conquassabit capita in terra multorum. De torrente in via bibet:propterea exaltabit caput. Gloria Patri, et Filio,et Spiritui Sancto.

Sicut erat inprincipio, et nunc, et semper,

et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Vivaldi

The Lord said to my Lord,Sit at My right hand,

until I make your foesa stool beneath your feet." The Lord will extend from Zionthe sceptre of your power.Rule in the midst of your foes! Yours the princely rank from your birth dayin holy splendorLike dew before the day star I have begotten you. The Lord has sworn and will not repent,You are a priest forever,a priest like to Melchisedech. The Lord is at your right hand,he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will judge the nations, heap up the slain, destroy the leaders far and wide. On his way, he will drink of the torrent,so to look up in triumph. Glory to the Father, to the Son,and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning, now and for ever,

world without end. Amen.
