Tankersley, Principal [email protected] Barbara N. Donaldson, Assistant Principal [email protected] Sandra P. Gillenwater, Assistant Principal [email protected] A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Families and Friends- How the time flies! We’re already through the first quarter, and the addition to the building is going well. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, please drive by the front or the back of the building and take a look. It appears it will soon be under roof! And believe me, we need it. We are up to 920 students. I believe this is the most students Hugh Mercer has ever had. All is going amazingly well! We have made some significant changes to our reading instructional program to make it even better. It seems to be working. Students are focused and learning well. December will be our shortest month. We begin with one of most academic yet fun events of the year. Our annual Math/Science Night is Thursday, December 5 from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. This is an active, hands-on learning evening, and all family members are invited. There will be fun learning activities involving science experiments and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities. Please join us on that evening. Once again, our hard working PTA will sponsor a Holiday Gift Shoppe for children to purchase inexpensive but nice gifts for parents and other family members. The holiday shop will be held on our stage (we get very creative with limited space!) and will run through the week of December 9 through 13. On December 13, Interim Reports go home. Please take time to examine these and if you have any questions - especially if your child’s grades seem to be slipping – contact his/her teacher. Parents and teachers working together can ensure a successful year for all students. Two or more heads together often come up with better solutions to problems. Attendance is very important at Hugh Mercer. What we teach your children is the foundation of all their future learning. That foundation needs to be solid and strong. For students to get that solid foundation, they need to be here every day. Of course, if children are sick, they should stay home and get well. Please don’t forget to send a note explaining their absence when they return to school. Children who have three or more unexcused absences

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Families and Friends- How the time flies! We’re already through the first quarter, and the addition to the building is going well. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, please drive by the front or the back of the building and take a look. It appears it will soon be under roof! And believe me, we need it. during a 9-week period are required to attend Saturday School. Our next Saturday School will be Saturday, December 14. First and second grade students will participate in our second fun run of the year, the Jingle Bell Jog. It begins at 3:45 P.M. on Monday, December 16. We hope to see many parents there to support their children in this worthwhile event. That same evening our wonderful PTA is sponsoring a Spirit Night at the McDonald’s on Route 1 (college), which is not far from Hugh Mercer. Why not treat your runners to dinner at McDonald’s after their effort in the Jingle Bell Jog? Part of the proceeds goes to our PTA for some of their many worthwhile projects. We end the year 2013 on a happy note with our annual Holiday Sing-Along on December 20 at 1:45 P.M. in our gym. The sing-along should end just in time for our Holiday Parties, which will begin in classrooms at 2:30 P.M. School will dismiss beginning at 3:15 P.M., and we will send your children home for a wonderful, restful two week Winter Break.

This time of year can be magical and memorable. We encourage you to relax and enjoy time with your children. For children, one of the best gifts of all is for parents and caregivers to take time with them. And one of the easiest and most worthwhile activities is for the adult to read to the child. They absolutely LOVE this! I have included a list of age appropriate books your children might enjoy which should be available at our local library or in most book stores. Happy reading and happy holidays! May you all enjoy a wonderful holiday season, celebrating in whatever way you choose, and may everyone enjoy a much deserved break. Our Winter Break runs from December 23 through January 3. We will welcome your children back to a new year on Monday, January 6, 2014. Once again, we thank you for entrusting your most precious possessions, your children, to learning under our care. Sincerely, Marjorie R. Tankersley Principal
