My Name is Patrick Hill. I am driven to learn, build, design and create things that will further us as human beings, create authentic experiences, and make this world a more sustainable place.

I practice design to solve today’s problems, for tomorrow.

Develop and create a speaker system unl ike anything on the market today.

Create a system that will tie together both digital streaming services and high quality vinyl records.

Opportunity:Problem:The digital age has caused us to move away from high fidelity sound.

Task:

Page 7: Patrick Hill Design

The way we consume music has changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Analog forms such as casettes and CD’s have had their place in history, but Vinyl continues to hold onto a small (but committed) market share. Overall vinyl sales are a fraction of what they have been in the past and, perhaps, small in comparison to streaming digital services, but one thing is clear: sales of vinyl albums has steadily grown over the last handful of years, and is projected to continue. Agave is a bridge between the digital and analog worlds aimed primarily at Millenials. It allows the user to switch between streaming and vinyl with the swipe of a fi nger.

Inspiration

I wanted to instill a clean, organic simplicity into the form of the speakers and turntable.

Sketch Models

The sketch models were designed in illustrator and cut on a laser cutter. This way, minimal glue is used in construction.

Final Model

The final prototypes are fully working bluetooth speakers, slip casted, glazed, and finished with high quality 20 watt speakers. The Turntable is constructed from foam, wood and paint.

Create a pod coffee system for the assigned brand Chemex.

Create a quick, hands-on pod system, aimed at achieving the highest quality cup of coffee.

Opportunity:Problem:Chemex coffee drinkers are very particular when it comes to their coffee, and existing pod systems remove the possibility of user control.

Task:

17

Page 18: Patrick Hill Design

18

Brewing quality coffee relies on two variables: extraction time and temperature.

Ideation

Page 20: Patrick Hill Design

Each sucessive model was revised to reduce the machine to its most minimal form. When a mug is inserted into the final produc, the overall form resembles the iconic hourglass Chemex shape.

Research and create a unique coffee table.

Develop a table that can be both a coffee and dining table, depending on the occasion.

Opportunity:Problem:Many small space dwellers have little room to have two tables to entertain or utilize for everyday use.

Sketch Models

After sketching, small scale models were made to prove the height adjustable concept.

Final Table

A rope, pulley, and clam cleat were used as the simple mechanism to create a 1:2 leverage ratio. The had integrated wooden wheels which rolled on the underside of the table during adjustment.

Kopiko (the Maori word for “curved”) is used to describe a design in its most ba-sic form, primarily using reclaimed ma-terials. On a trip to the redwood pile at the Santa Cruz dump, I came accross a pile of offcuts from an old decking proj-ect. This Maori word, and the patinaed old-growth redwood inspired me to design a new purpose for the wood. I was also personally interested in wanting to learn to bend laminate, and used this as an opportunity to create a clean and streamlined surfboard rack.

Sketches

32

Page 33: Patrick Hill Design

The wood was planed down to 1/16”. Next, a jig was built from masonite. Glue was applied, and the wood was clamed into place.

33

Page 34: Patrick Hill Design

The laminate then was taken out of the mold, cleaned up, and had the nose block and cork glued into place.

Drawing upon my experience shaping bodysurf handplanes and surfboards, I wanted to experiment in creating surfcraft utilizing repurposed and alternative materials. In this case: a discarded honeycomed carboard Point-of-Purchase poster display, and reclaimed old-growth redwood.

Previous Models37

Page 38: Patrick Hill Design

To achieve a honeycombed core, the handplane needed protection around the rails. The reclaimed redwood would do this, but first needed to be cut out of an old piece of fenceboard with a template.

Construction38

Page 39: Patrick Hill Design

The wood was foiled into form, achieving the proper rocker and curvature. Next, the cardboard was shaved to meet the curvature of the wood.

Construction39

Page 40: Patrick Hill Design

The handplane was then glassed with fibreglass on top, and a fabric on the bottom. Wood inserts were added into the cardboard to use as handle anchors. A few sanding coats are then added to both the top and bottom. Finally, the whole thing is sanded down.
