Background and aims • This is one of a series of regional events• It aims to address issues of concern and

explore the variety of information sources and support for patients, carers and the public through health library provision

• It intends to create an action plan of ways for NHS library staff to promote health information for patients, carers and the public.

Putting the patient first

Health literacy: our challenge • Recent research from London South Bank University

found that 43% of people in England are unable to properly understand everyday medical information and instructions

• Solutions are needed to ensure health information is more easily understood

• ‘There are 34.1million adults in England aged 16 -65 years; this means that between 15-21 million people of working age across the country may not be able to understand and use the information they need to look after their health’.
