The nose and paranasal sinuses Treatment of chronic sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis may be treated with various nasal sprays, antibiotics and cortisone drugs. If the patient does no longer respond to or be treated effectively with medication, conventional sinus surgery may be the only remaining option. In this case the affected areas of the mucous membrane and other tissue structures are removed surgically to re-establish the normal mucus drainage and ventilation of the sinus cavity.

Balloon dilation and what it can do for you! Small balloon - great effect This new minimal invasive technology uses a small, flexible Sinus Balloon Catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways in order to restore the normal drainage and function of the sinus. The ostium is gently restructured and widened by the inflated balloon while preserving the integrity of the delicate sinus lining. Balloon dilation is performed by qualified Ear, Nose and Throat physicians. It may be performed as single therapy or in com-bination with other medical treatments or conventional sinus surgery (hybrid procedure).

Balloon dilation is a proven technology which has been used in cardiology for more than thirty years to open up blocked or sclerotic vessels (angioplasty).

Steps in using the Balloon Dilation Technique

The ENT specialist uses a guiding cannula and flexible guide wire to access the infected sinus gently through the nostrils.

A soft and flexible sinus balloon catheter is then advanced over the guide wire and placed across the blocked ostium. The balloon is slowly inflated and the narrowed area is gently widened to the balloon diameter of 5 to 7 mm.

After a few seconds the balloon is deflated, leaving an open sinus passageway re-establishing normal mucus drainage and sinus function.

The patients will feel relieved almost immediately and can breathe freely again.

Normal functionThe air passing through the nasal cavity is warmed or cooled to within 1 degree of body temperature. In addition, the air is humi-dified, and dust and other particulate matter removed. Nose and sinuses are lined with a mucous membrane carrying fine cilia (hair) which constantly clean and remove particulate matter and pathogens along with the mucus from your respiratory system. The sinuses are connected to the nasal cavity by small passage-ways (ostia) for normal mucus drainage.

Chronic sinusitisInflammation of the mucous membrane caused by bacterial, microbial and/or viral infections can lead to a blockage of the sinus passageway limiting or interrupting the normal mucus drainage. This condition may then lead to a buildup of mucus in the affected sinus and in succession to the infection of the entire sinus cavity.

Symptoms commonly observed

• Congested nose, difficulty breathing through the nose• Headache, facial pain• Feeling of pressure • Loss of sense of smell and taste• Toothache• Secretion discharge of green mucus• Fatigue and exhaustion

If the symptoms persist for any extended period of time (10 weeks) or the infection appears more often than 4 times a year, this is referred to as chronic sinusitis.
