Having endured many years of dental problems and the embarrassment and discomfort they had caused, Eileen was more than ready for her momentous day with us at The Implant Centre. Just a few hours later, she left with a fabulous new set of teeth and a smile to light up Hove.

Despite maintaining an excellent oral hygiene regimen at home, and regularly visiting her dental hygienist, Eileen was fighting an endless losing battle with periodontal disease. Many of her teeth had become loose, she always had an unpleasant taste in her mouth, and bad breath was a constant worry. Most photographs would show her with a tight-lipped smile and, other than with family, she would invariably speak with her hand in front of her mouth. Knowing that something had to be done, she sought our help.

Implants – The Best Option Following an initial assessment, our specialist periodontist (treatment of gum disease) suggested that Eileen meet with one of our surgeons to see whether implants could

provide a longer-lasting solution for her. He advised that her lower teeth could be saved with periodontal treatment. But to effectively clear the infection, the best solution would be to remove all her upper teeth and replace them with a full-arch dental implant bridge.

On the day of Eileen’s surgery, we extracted all her remaining upper teeth and placed four implants, while our on-site laboratory constructed her a temporary bridge so she could leave with new teeth (we fitted her permanent bridge a few months later).

Screw-retained Crowns and Bridges on ImplantsMost people are aware of the hollow crowns that are fixed onto teeth with cements and how, over time, this cement can fail, causing the crown to become loose and even fall out. Wherever possible, we use a far more advanced method of attachment of implant crowns and bridges, which avoids the weak link of the cement. As well as increased security, there are many other advantages to this technique including a massive improvement to the health of the gums around your implants. Using digital imaging, and very sophisticated computer-enhanced milling, our crowns are manufactured to an exceptionally high accuracy not seen in other forms of dentistry. Each one is a complex piece of engineering with a small screw in its titanium core, which rotates to hold the crown extremely securely to the implant. The crown’s tiny screw hole is then filled carefully with a white filling to make it invisible.

We pioneered this technique in 2008 and, through our extentive teaching programmes, many other clinics are continuing to adopt the procedure. It requires great accuracy on the part of the surgeon who places the implant, as the screw hole has to be in the ideal place for the final crown. Instant Implants and Instant TeethIn many instances, it is possible to remove a tooth and place an implant immediately into the extraction socket – an ‘instant implant’ – and this is often the case near the front of the mouth.

It is often also possible to make a temporary crown at the time of implant placement, which is attached immediately onto the implant – an ‘instant tooth’. This means that a patient may come in with a failing tooth, have it removed, an implant placed into the socket, and a temporary crown fitted onto the implant – an instant implant and an instant tooth.

Patients love the speed and simplicity of this treatment and the fact that they never need to wear a denture.

Unlike most implant clinics, we have our very own expert team of technicians working with us on-site at The Implant Centre. This close collaboration enables our patients, surgeons and restorative dentists to have complete confidence in the final implant crowns and bridges.

Can you spot the implant?Paula had lost confidence in her front four-tooth bridge and also had a continued struggle with a painful denture. Instant implants were placed and instant teeth were fabricated and fitted within an hour.
