Executive & Director’s Report

Executive & Program Director Update

Check out our new and improved website at

www.pathwaysclubhouse.com. A big thank you to Ro-

wan Birch and Mike T. for all your hard work creating

this more modern, useful, and easy to navigate website.

Our annual fundraising dinner, Building Pathways For

Hope, was another huge success! With a sold-out 300

people in attendance, we raised $65,000! A highlight

of the night was Mashood sharing his personal story of

recovery. It takes a lot of work and helping hands to

put an event like this together. Thank you to all our

supporters, donors, speakers, performers, members,

staff, Board of Directors, and everyone who helped

make this evening a night to remember.

The Food Services Unit has been busy doing what we

like to do—cook!

We are excited to have new member Rene join us and

for the return of old members like Elton O’Neil. Each

person makes a big difference and we appreciate every-

one’s help to make us a healthy happening unit! Have

concerns about the new menu? Can’t find something

you like? Don’t know what some of the things

are? Please come talk to us! We would like to help you

find something yummy that makes your tummy hap-

py. We can point out things you might like, give you

taste tests to see if you like something and we also wel-

come constructive feedback that can help us make our

dishes better.

Thanks to some helpful hints from Becky Cutting

we’ve added more chicken to our Chicken Tikka Masala

and tweaked the sauce a bit too. We hope you like

it! We are also working hard on developing healthy

snack items for the snack bar. If you have any ideas or

recipes or just want

to help us make

stuff, drop by and

give us your two

bits or your two

hands!

Save the date: Friday, December 9th is the Christmas party!

Like previous years, the party will be held right here at Pathways

Clubhouse. If you would like to be involved in the planning pro-

cess in anyway, or be on the decorating committee, please see a

COST staff. There will be a Christmas party social planning

meeting in the COST unit Tuesday, November 1st.

Thank you to those who attended our last social planning meet-

ing. Our November calendar includes outings to a Sockeyes’

hockey game, pool at E-spot arcade, and a trip to the German

Christmas Market at Jack Poole plaza. Some of the in-house ac-

tivities will be Christmas baking and seasonal crafts. At the

meeting we also talked about making the sign-up for social

nights more fair. Starting in November, you may only sign-up

for TWO subsidized socials per month. For example, you might

choose 1 dining out social and 1 movie night within a given

month. If you would like to attend a third subsidized outing in

the same month, you will be automatically waitlisted and will

only have the opportunity to go if all the spots do not fill up.

Please note that starting in November, you must call in to sign up

for a social outing. There will no longer be a sign up list on the

social board.

The Clerical Unit would like to extend a warm welcome to new

members Dan, Vivian, Yuan Lin, Rene, Pamela and David. We

look forward to seeing both new and familiar faces at our up-

coming Christmas social planning meetings!

10 Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

1. If you can, kick-start the day by the seashore, even if its

cold and snowy outside. A 30-minute brisk walk on the beach

will have you benefiting from negative ions which are known to

reduce stress and anxiety. Negative ions are invisible particles

found by the ocean or after a heavy rainfall. Just a 30-minute

brisk walk on the beach at the start of the day will ensure you

feel energetic all day long.

2. Get Physical! A regular exercise routine increases energy,

mental and physical well-being and releases stress and anxiety.

Check out your local gym for aerobics classes. If you feel like

switching it up, try rock climbing or change up your exercise

routine and challenge yourself. A fun playlist will give you extra

bounce!

3. Stimulate your brain. Listen to music. Not only does music

soothe the soul, it’s a stress reliever too! Music that leaves you

feeling uplifted will motivate you to accomplish your daily

goals.

4. Boost your immune system. Take a mid-morning walk in

the park regardless of the weather. Nature will wrap itself around

you and you will reap the benefits. Not only will you boost your

immune system and feel happier, you will also improve your

cognition and remember more throughout the day.

5. Snack on walnuts and almonds throughout the day. These

kind of nuts are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, riboflavin and

L-carnitine, which improve brain function and reduce inflamma-

tion. Simply add them to your breakfast cereal. Eat them alone.

Or, sprinkle them with a pinch of cinnamon for added taste and

to feel your absolute best.

6. Step away from your work area and take a break during

the lunch hour. It’s also a good time to replenish nutr ients

the brain needs to ensure you remain active and alert during the

afternoon without dragging your feet.

7. Soak up the winter sunlight. Take a walk dur ing break

time and take advantage of natural sunlight even if it is cold out-

side. Keep curtains open and your workspace well lit.

8. A calm mind is a clear mind. Take 10 minutes daily and

practice a mindfulness technique. Focus on breathing. Take deep

breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling, slowly, through

the mouth.

9. Express your creativity. You don’t need to be an ar tist.

Creativity could be anything you enjoy doing that is effortless

and enjoyable (e.g. cooking and baking, woodworking and home

DIY projects, etc.)

10. Try something new! Give yourself something to look for-

ward to every week. Activities such as trapeze, rock climbing,

even speed skating will add excitement to your life, and it will

give you something to look forward to. New and fun activities

such as these ones will inspire you to get off the couch this sea-

son to beat the winter blues.

When I am broke with no money I get very depressed. I like to

work extra jobs around Christmas. I live to dress up as Santa for

Christmas, and also like to dress up on Halloween. It keeps me

young at heart. I like to come social nights a lot in the winter

time. I like the Halloween Dance in October and the Christmas

party in December. I also like to be around a lot of friends and

my friends help me. I like thinking about my mum in Christmas’

past, it makes me happy! -Steve

-Take 1000mg vitamin D daily.

-If you can purchase a SAD Light it increases serotonin naturally

and can reset your sleep cycle.

-If you are not eating properly try to follow the Canada food

guide as best as you can.

-Talk to family or friends especially during the holiday season.

-Counter all negative self talk or thing by saying (stop) silently.

This will help you worry less about the things you cannot control

anyway.

-Set goals that you can accomplish which sometimes may mean

lowering your standards. Example, Walking the hill instead of

running it.

-Most of all give yourself credit when you Accomplish things

not matter how small they seem to you. -Kevin

Beating the Winter Blues

It is easy for our moods to be beaten down by the hands of winter. The

days are shorter and the nights are longer; the weather is colder and

rainier than any other time in the year. But fear not, there are ways to

beat the winter blues, or at least alleviate some of the symptoms. The

first step is being aware of your emotional and mental health during

these times. Have you been feeling low levels of motivation or energy?

Difficulty in following through with social events or activities that you

enjoy? Changes in eating and sleeping patterns? It is normal for the

body and brain to feel irregular during these seasonal changes because

the body needs time to adjust to the change, but if these symptoms

seem extra severe, it may be the case of the winter blues or season af-

fective disorder (SAD). Making small changes in your daily life can

have drastically positive effects. One of the easiest and most effective

ways to increase moods or improve mental health is to give your body

what it is lacking, and in the case of the winter, it is light. Try to expose

yourself to as much light as possible during the day; that means open-

ing up the curtains to let natural daylight into the room, switching on

lights switches and lamps, or spending more time outdoors. It may not

be sunny like the summertime, but it is still brighter than indoors.

Working off of the trend of going outdoors, a continuation of daily ex-

ercise is extremely beneficial to mental wellness. In the morning or

afternoon, throw on your jacket and try to go for short or long walks, or

find some form of exercise that is enjoyable and make time for it in

your daily routine. What you eat and put into your body is equally as

important as what you do with it, during these colder months your body

may crave more sugar and simple carbohydrates like white bread and

pasta. These foods be temporarily satisfying but will not nurture the

body nearly as well as healthier foods like whole grains, nuts, and fruits

and vegetables. So try your best to eat well amongst all these cravings!

The last tip to beating the winter blues is another simple one that hope-

fully we are all aware of; it is to talk to family and friends and allow

yourself to receive support from those around you. Be part of an envi-

ronment that is bright, positive, and supportive and you’ll be sure to knockout the blues.

WHEN MY FIRST ILLNESS STARTED AND

HOW IT HAS HELPED ME OVER THE YEARS

I became a member of Pathways Clubhouse since back

in the year of 1995. Pathway’s Clubhouse has

changed my life in so many ways. Things that I have

experienced in the last while has helped me out a lot

over the years also. Working on the phones, has helped

me with a lot of things. I can do things for other

people as well. My illness has always been hard for

other’s to understand the situation with Grown adults at

the same time

focusing on what you are doing all of the time. The ill-

ness that I have had has been very hard for me, over the

years. People also need the help of trying to figure out

things for themselves.

People need to focus on things around them all of the

time.

People from Pathways have changed my life in so

many ways. People always need a place to come to

and to get better for themselves in life too as well.
