Pathogen testing: Accurate and Fast

The award-winning BAX ® System is a fast and accurate method for detecting

pathogens or other unwelcome organisms in a broad range of food and environmentalsamples. The system breaks down samples at the genetic level, using the power of PCR to detect the target microbe with certainty.

Advanced technology with the BAX ® System

Beyond accurate results for presence/absence, the BAX ® System offers advancedcapabilities for multiple target detection in the same well. Probe-based chemistry canprovide for additional information, such as species differentiation within each sample. With a single program for several bacteria, the BAX ® System allows you to testmultiple targets in the same run, up to 96 samples per batch. Tabletted PCR reagents, which enable minimal hands-on time using standard laboratory techniques, providefor long shelf life and consistency.Friendly screen prompts guide you through the entire procedure, reducing the needfor highly skilled technicians and expensive training. Depending on the test chemistry, the system delivers results on prepared samples within 1 to 3.5 hours of processingtime. These results are clearly displayed on screen with a simple positive or negativeicon that eliminates the need for expert interpretation. Electronic les allow you toprint, share and store your results for easy archiving and retrieval.Customers around the world have made the BAX ® System an integral part of theirquality control systems due to its tremendous capability for impact on their

operations--from dramatically decreasing false positives and minimizing re-testing toreducing employee training and speeding the time to market. The speed and accuracy of DNA-based detection. The simplicity of a load-it-and-leave-itoperation. The familiarity of a Microsoft ® Windows ® interface. The BAX ® systemcombines it all for smooth testing procedures at any stage in the processing pipeline

Salmonella detectionwith the BAX ® System

E. coli O157:H7 testingwith BAX® System

When Salmonella are present in a food or environmental sample, the genetic-based

BAX® System uses the power of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to rapidly create(amplify) millions of copies of a unique, Salmonella-speci c DNA fragment for reliableSalmonella detection.

Advantages of the BAX ® System:

- Single tablet that combines all of the PCR reagents you need for Salmonelladetection

- Minimal hands-on time, in addition to accuracy, long shelf life and consistency- Automated processing in 1 to 3.5 hours for a full rack of 96 tests- Data can be easily stored, shared or printed

Developed in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service andvalidated on real-world sample sizes, this extremely reliable and highly accurateassay incorporates Scorpion ® probes for advanced real-time PCR technology. Thisassay delivers superior sensitivity and speci city so you can detect all knownE. coli O157:H7 –- even atypical isolates.

Pathogen testing case studies

Salmonella Testing and Detection

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food-borne illness, withabout 140,000 reported cases of Salmonellosis annually in the EuropeanUnion. Various serotypes have been associated with meat, poultry, eggs, milk,

sh, sauces, cream- lled desserts, peanut butter, chocolate and other foods.

With an increase in antibiotic resistance and an upward prevalence trend inbroilers, food processors need fast and accurate testing methods. Traditionalisolation from culture requires many steps and more than four days to getresults.

Choosing the best tool for pathogen detection doesn'thave to be dif cult

Salmonella testing: It‘s not just for the plant anymore

Reducing false positives is critical for processed meat producer

Every food company wants a pathogen detection method that is fast, reliable andeasy to use. The quality control labs understand that PCR-based testing systems offeradvanced science, with results that are faster than culture and more accurate thanantibodies. But how are they to know which PCR system is best? For one company, thechoice was easy.

When Salmonella shows up in the plant, food companies need accurate testingmethods to verify that their interventions are working. The BAX ® System allowed thispoultry processor to do just that, plus extend their monitoring into feed, ocks andother supply areas.

Although this producer of processed meat products implemented good measures tosigni cantly reduce the risk of pathogens, its quality assurance testing methodconsistently reported false positives. Incorporating the BAX ® System into routinetesting has made a tremendous difference.
