Under a baobab tree, an old man tells a story to the children around him: the story of the everlasting friendship between Maki, a little boy aged 10, and Zarafa, an orphaned giraffe, a gift from the Pasha of Egypt to the King of France, Charles X.

Hassan, Prince of the Desert, is instructed by the Pasha to deliver Zarafa to France. But Maki has made up his mind to do everything in his power to stop Hassan from fulfilling his mission and to bring the giraffe back to its native land – even if it means risking his own life – because he must fulfill his promise to Zarafa’s late mother.

During an epic journey that takes them from Sudan to Paris, passing on the way through Alexandria, Marseille and the snow-capped Alps, they have many adventures, crossing paths with the aviator Malaterre, a pair of unusual twin cows called Mounh and Sounh, and the pirate queen Bouboulina.

Loosely inspired by the true story of the giraffe given by the Pasha of Egypt to the King of France in 1827.

July 1976, the year of the heat wave. Claude, an Algerian Jew who came to France 15 years earlier, takes his young wife Isabelle, his two sons Simon (12) and Bibou (8) and his mother-in-law Mamie to Brittany. It was Isabelle who, after having caught Claude in the throes of adultery, chose for this vacation to return to Le Rocher Abraham, the village where she was born.

The day after their arrival they are joined by their friends Bernard and Ber-nadette, and Jacky and Marie-France.

The holidaymakers are viewed with distrust by the locals, whose accents are as coarse as their hands. Their welcome is particularly unfriendly in the Pondemer café where the village men gather. Pied-noir Jews from Paris don’t mix so comfortably with Catholics rooted in the Brittany provinces, and these locals are men, real men.

But gradually, with a great deal of humour, humanity and empathy, the sus-picion melts and bonds start to form. The old grudges and ill feelings of the past are swept away, giving way to friendship, laughter and holiday romance – those unforgettable moments and feelings we have all shared. At Le Rocher Abraham, 15 miles from the sea, Claude and Isabelle find their marriage is back on track, while Bibou and Simon, two brothers who are very close, spend a memorable summer full of childhood discoveries of the world of grown-ups: their best ever holiday.

Maurice Tourneur was whimsically versatile, experimenting with a wide range of genres : from melodrama to comedy, from the Grand-guignol, to adventure and detective films.

After having emigrated to the United States, the French filmmaker Maurice Tourneur was one of the most remarkable directors of American cinema dur-ing the period spanning 1915 to 1925. Upon his return to France in 1930, he directed for Pathé Natan a dozen films, most of which he worked on alongside son Jacques Tourneur.
