I was destined from an early
age to cut apart things, glue,
paste, tape, build,and sew all
sorts of little things to keep
busy. I lived in a home where sewing was
as common as cooking, and in those days,
cooking dinner was an important meal
where family gathered around the table
to talk and enjoy one another's company.
Mom was never hesitant to hand over a
pair of scissors to me at an early age. I
was taught to sew quite young in life, so
I was shown how to handle scissors
properly...except...if you look closely...I
think I was caught by the camera cut-
ting a book up! I just call this the begin-
ning of "collage work"!
I have many interests and hobbies aside
from my passion for quilting. I have a
deep affection for animals. My beautiful
female Akita dog is named "Tashi" short
for Shiro Tamashi meaning White Spirit
in Japanese.
I love teaching, photography, gardening,
reading, snuggling with kitties, dancing,
writing, painting, journaling, researching
history, traveling, putting puzzles to-
gether, watching a good thriller on tele-
vision, learning, learning and endlessly
learning from those who know a lot of
one thing
http://www.lindampoole.com/index.php
Oh my goodness !!! Where did
the summer go? Summer is never
my time to quilt, too hot and I
like being outside at the pool.
When September and football
season start, I'm ready to sew. This quilting
year, I decided to make an early quilting
resolution, well maybe two resolutions.
First, is to use fabric out of my huge stash
and NOT to buy any more fabric unless abso-
lutely necessary. The second resolution is to
finish one UFO project a month. I have so
many UFOs, I may never start a new project
for a year!!!! Maybe, I should rethink that
resolution!
If you were not at the September business
meeting, you missed a good time. I stated at
that meeting our business meeting prior to
our speaker will be kept very short, as most
of the information will be in our newsletter.
So please read the newsletter when it comes
out! By doing this, we could do Show and Tell
before break.
I want to thank everyone who signed up to
serve on the Community Service, Program,
Education, and Hospitality/facility commit-
tees. Kathy Chickey, Donna Sherk and I will
be in touch with everyone in the near future.
I feel with more people involved in the Guild
the stronger we will become. It's always nice
to have fresh ideas and suggestions. If you
were not at the September meeting and
interested in signing up for a committee, let
me know at the meeting.
Keeping sewing and
I will see you in October!!!

Message from your
President: Patty Frazier
Meet This month‘s Speaker:
Linda Poole
Page 2 Patchwork Press
President Patty Frazier welcomed all attending. Connie
Wilson moved and Deb Reb seconded the motion that the
treasurer‘s report be accepted. Pauline Charles and Deb Reb moved
and seconded the motion to accept the secretary‘s report. Patty
thanked Trish Geesaman, her husband and two grandsons for helping
to set up for the meeting. Louise Bell will send them an official thank
-you. Sue Kline and Debbie Newell also helped with moving (heavy)
tables and setting up chairs. Visitors were Ellie Sherk from East
Petersburg and Caroline Artz from Lebanon.
Small Games of Chance: Maureen Light, Faye Adams and Kathy
Gervin met to discuss the small games of chance license application
process. The process will cost $125, and there are several compli-
cated stipulations. The committee will apply for the license this year,
with the goal of holding the raffle during the 2015 quilt show. They
will begin the application process before the November Quilt Show,
and will also begin selling tickets for the 2015 raffle at that time,
because the small games of change license is good for one year.
Workshops: Patty explained that there are not enough members
signed up to support the October workshop. There are several other
workshops being offered during the year, and she implored members
to sign up for these. Patty will open up workshops to other guilds in
order to make the workshops viable. Patty has also flip-flopped the
May and February programs to accommodate one of our program pre-
senters. The new year for Guild meetings will start in August 2015,
and we will not meet in January, 2016. The June meeting will be our
potluck dinner meeting, and we will not meet in July.
Hospitality, Education, Program and Community Service: Patty
appealed to the membership for someone to chair the Hospitality
Committee and the Education Committee. Hospitality is especially
important for meetings like the December Christmas cookie exchange
and the June potluck dinner, and Education is important as part of
the Guild‘s outreach into the community. Donna Sherk is looking for
help with scheduling programs, and Kathy Chickey needs help with
Community Service.
Ways & Means: Anne Annibali described the Memory Lane basket
being raffled for the evening and urged members to purchase tick-
ets. Beth Kapp was the winner.
Community Service: Kathy Chickey explained that Dianne Deemer is
collecting items for sale at Cornwall Manor, such as table runners,
placemats, travel bags, seatbelt covers (Dianne has a pattern for
this). Elaine Brandt will have a class for the Disappearing Nine-Patch
quilt on October 11, 2014. The cost for the class is $5. The first
block made will be donated toward making a quilt for DVI. The class
can also be considered a ―sew-in‖ if participants want to work on
other projects. At the quilt show, sewing machines will be available
for visitors to make items for DVI. Kathy can offer a receipt for
members who need a receipt for pillowcase donations. Names of mem-
bers who have made DVI quilts this year will be put into a drawing for
a gift certificate. Patty urged members to participate in this project.
Pauline Charles explained the quilts for DVI are a continuous project,
and are also part of the United Day of Caring.

Community Service by Kathy Chickey
I thought it would be a good idea for the members as well as myself to have a list of community
projects we are doing at guild this year.
DVI: This has been an ongoing project for 15+ years which co-insides with the United Way Day of Caring,
led by Pauline Charles and Carol Maurer. There have been an amazing number of quilts donated over
the years. We will once again have a Day of Caring and Sewing in April with the Guild in the
Community Center at Phil Haven. Specific date to be announced later. Last year was a huge success
and we hope it will continue this year.
Reminder: there will be kits and backings available at the back table during the meetings.
Pillowcases: Making pillowcases for Hershey Medical Center Children's Hospital has been a favorite of the
Guild. Our members have been more than generous with their time and fabric in making this project
a success. Guild member Jeannette Henning has become a coordinator for ConKerr Cancer and has
been active in fund-raising which goes toward the purchase of fabric for kits.
Reminder: kits are available at the back table during the meetings
Cornwall Manor: We will continue to support Cornwall Manor to thank them for the 20 years they opened
their home to us without charge for our meetings. Throughout the year, if they have any special re
quests, we will let the guild know what items are needed for their spring festival. Right now the
request is smaller items such as placemats, table runners, walker bags, hanging tea towels and some
smaller lap quilts. Items can be given to members Sally Renda and Diane Deemer at the meetings.
Reminder: You can find patterns for these items on our web site.
Morning Star: Morning Star is an organization which assists pregnant women who are alone and helps them
come to a decision on what to do with their babies; either adoption or keeping them (no abortion).
This will be one of the new projects in the coming year. They are requesting small quilts no larger
than 36 x 36, gender neutral. Receiving blankets, bibs, burp pads, baby essentials such as lotions,
shampoo, etc. They give the layette sets to the moms in plastic bags and did ask about small tote bags
to make a nicer presentations. I do plan on making a sample tote with pattern if anyone wishes to go
that way with a donation.
Phil Haven: I asked Phil Haven of any special needs they may have for the coming year. They did say they
needed 34 fleece blankets for the Outpatient/Adolescent Unit. They requested no black or white but
will accept neutral, soft colors. I will find out the quanity Phil Haven wants and will purchase the
fleece needed for the beds. I am also planning a Sit-n-Sew day (details will follow) where we can sew
the hems on the fleece before you work on your own project. It will not take long to just sew a hem on
these fleece blankets. Further info into how to sew on the hem will follow in the newsletter if you just
want to take one and sew it at home.
As mentioned before, we have a very generous budget for Community Service Projects and this money will be
shared to help defray the cost of each project. I also know that our members have been more than generous
with their own stash in making pillowcases, quilts and items for Cornwall Manor.
Most importantly: Please know you are encouraged to pick the one (or more if you choose) service project
that appeals to you to participate in. No one is expected to participate in every project – just the one(s) that
you are comfortable doing or feel strongly about. We hope, as always, to have another successful year!
Any questions you may have about any of the projects can be addressed to me, Kathy Chickey:
phone (717) 469-7132 , email [email protected] or before or during break at any meeting.

MONEYWI$E by Linda Rohland
Can‘t believe it is October already. Hope everyone is working on their items for the silent
auction for the Quilt Show. All money earned from this auction helps support the Guild‘s pro-
jects and the costs of the Quilt Show. The Fall Retreat is soon here. If you are still thinking about going,
contact Christenna Stamm to get your room. We always have a great time. Since the camp has gotten a new
cook, the food is also wonderful. Christenna and her committee are working hard to ensure a great week-
end. If you have any questions please contact me at [email protected] or 717-272-7262.
Our yearly donation of quilts to DVI makes a very positive impact. Kathy is also investigating a project involving fleece
blankets as well as a project that involves a charity in Harrisburg called Morning Star. Morning Star services pregnant
women in need.
Quilt Show: Maureen Light and Amy Wissinger explained that there will be ―Burma Shave‖ type signs on the roads leading
to the Expo Center and will advertise heavily for the show. Kathy Foltz will use Sign-up Genius for volunteers, although
members can contact her directly as well. Pauline Charles will coordinate demonstrations. Jo Garvin is responsible for
preparing the hanging bars and the tables. A plea was made for quilts, quilts, quilts. Kitty Zackey will receive quilts on
Wednesday evening before the quilt show. Quilts must be picked up Sunday evening. Vicky Nice and her crew will hang the
quilts. Sandy Walters and Donna Pozorski will manage the silent auction, and they showed an example of an item that will
be included. Baskets of items are also welcome. Make and Take is currently in need of a chairman. Susan Vachino will man-
age the book and magazine sale, which will include cookbooks. Sue also appealed to members for tote bags, and notions for
grab bags. She will do random door prizes from the books booth throughout the show. The lobby of the Expo center will
be used for community service, and will include an exhibition of DVI quilts. JoLynn Brummer will manage the tear-down.
There are also tables available, for a fee of $30, if members want to sell items. Participants need a PA tax ID number.
There will be 6 vendors at the show. And, Maureen Light had (tongue-in-cheek) ‗doorprizes‘ for guild members – table-
cloths that needed hemming and panel kits to be made up for the silent auction. Guild members took on these ‗prizes‘ for
the quilt show. Block-of the-Month: Doug Wilson thanked members who participated in making 16 blocks this month. The winner of the
blocks was Linda Rohland. Doug referred to a website called eQuilter for fabric, patterns and instructions. Next month‘s
block is called ―Sun and Shadows.‖
Charms: Twelve members participated in Charms this month. Marie Perfect won the charms, and Vicki Nice won this
month‘s half yard of fabric.
Education: Rosemary Stieg explained in detail the various functions of our education committee. The chair of this com-
mittee is currently vacant.
Membership: Sue Bechtel introduced 4 new members: Becky Duke, Elaine Stine, Elaine Biehn and Ellie Sherk.
October/November Retreat: Christenna Stamm requested various items for the upcoming retreat. Information packets
will be sent out after the October meeting. Sue Kline and Sue Bechtel are helping with the retreat.
Show-and-Tell: Several members showed and explained their projects to the joy and wonderment of all attending. Also to
the joy and wonderment of all attending, Emily Kreps introduced her young son, Judah.
Next Guild Meeting: Monday, October 6, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Quick and EASY!! If you‘re giving a book as a gift, why not make a quilter‘s bookmark to go
with it? It literally takes three 4‖ x 4‖ squares!!

Thank you ladies of the Lebanon Quilters Guild who continue to make smiles happen. The follow
ing is a thank you from Charity who is the mother of a sick child.
‖Tyler has always been a full of energy little boy! He loves to be loud, get dirty, drive tractors
and play ball. I noticed that during June, 2013 he started to slow down a lot. I decided to take
him to see his pediatrician ―just to be safe‖. In the week that it took them to get him in for his
Appointment, he really went downhill. He begged to be carried because his legs hurt and his naps
were getting longer and he was just a little bit crabby. His blood tests confirmed what his doctor
already had suspected - leukemia. What a blow! I would never ever wish that feeling on any parent!
We headed home to pack our bags, tell our other children bye and drove to the hospital. We spent
several hours in the E.R. before we were finally taken to his new room. How scary & cold that room
looked, especially to a three year old! It was so comforting to see a sweet circus pillowcase that
someone had lovingly made. When our church ladies had sewn some pillowcases for the hospital and
I helped to pack them up, I remember feeling so sorry for the children and praying for whoever
would receive them. Now that was my child! Tyler loved his pillowcase. The nurses brought him
an extra one so that we could wash his. Sometimes you think that what you are doing doesn‘t
matter — just remember, it‘s the little things that count! Thank you all.‖
You really do make a difference when you sew a pillowcase for a child and I hope that you will all continue to
support our Guild in keeping the smiles on the faces of the children…….

This is amazing Jennie!!
Congratulations to Kim Loar! Her quilt, ―Multiplicity‖ won 2nd place in the

Honestly—there is so much stuff online you could spend day in and day out finding new and different ideas.
Today‘s idea is about red work. And oh my, what a neat idea! Photograph your home (or the home of a friend)
or ANY photo actually, you would like to convert…….and turn it into an awesome red work project. Wouldn‘t
this be an awesome gift?

Editor‘s Note: This is another exquisite appliqué quilt from Winterthur
Museum, this one dating from the mid 1850‘s. The appliqués work was precise
and expertly done. Unfortunately these dimly lit galleries with pot lights in the
ceiling are not conducive to decent photography.
