2. History of Patchouli After spreading from continent to continent, Patchouli

dominates the rural health scene.

Natural History Patchouli is a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia, growing wild in

Sumatra and Java and cultivated at lower tropical jungles. This bushy plant grows to the height of 3 feet, having a strong stem

and soft, hairy leaves. For essential oil production, the plant is cut two or three times per year, with the best quality oil derived from leaves harvested in the wet season.

The leaves are hand picked, bundled or baled, and allowed to partially dry in the shade and ferment for a few days before the oil is extracted via steam distillation.

Cultural History Its name originates from the early Tamil people of South India,

who are said to have connected to the plant since its origin. After centuries, patchouli arrived in the Middle East along the silk trading routes, and Napoleon (allegedly eventually introduced the herb to Europe.

Patchouli later traveled westward with trade routes, and became a popular fragrance among the Far East as well. It was associated with all that was different from Western culture. In fact, if a silk or a carpet didn’t smell like patchouli, merchants along the trade routes doubted its authenticity.

Herbal History Plants have been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded

history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous cultures used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems in which herbal therapies were used.

In the early 19th century, scientists began to extract and modify the active ingredients from plants. Later, chemists began making their own version of plant compounds and, over time, became modern drugs.
