Starting in the picturesque town of Trelew in Southern Argentina, we’ll

head in our private mini coach two hours to Puerto Piramides, which will be

our base for the next week. Puerto Piramides is a UNESCO world heritage

site, recognised not only as the best whale-watching place on Earth, but

also for its wider marine life, birdlife and other wildlife. Featured in BBC

and National Geographic documentary films, this rich area also boasts

Magellanic penguins, dolphins, sea lions and southern elephant seals.

Our accommodation for the next week is at the luxurious, waterfront Las

Restingas Hotel De Mar. After settling in and a quick meet & greet and

photography crash course (and perhaps spotting some whales playing

through your panoramic, beachfront windows), we’ll head to dinner.

ITINERARYDay 1: Trelew, Argentina

Day 2 - 6 (5 days): Whales and WildlifePart whale watching, part shore-based, this week will blow you away.

When the weather’s good, we’ll charter a large, private RIB (zodiac boat)

with plenty of room and the best captain who knows exactly what we want

in terms of lighting and backgrounds to get the best photos. This time

of year, the whole bay is packed with southern right whales, including

mothers and calves, and curiosity will bring these gentle giants (up to 15m

long!) right alongside - so close you’ll need your wide-angle lens and a

lens-cloth to wipe off the whale-breath! Each encounter is captivatingly

different, and with a bit of luck we’ll experience everything from breaching,

tail lobbing against the sunset, resting calves - even mating! We have the

boat all day, but typically we’ll go out early for the morning lighting for a

few hours, come back for breaky, head back out again to try our luck in

another area, come back for lunch, enjoy a few hours off to go through

your photos or look for fossilised sharks teeth on the shore before then

heading back out again in the late afternoon, staying out until the magical

golden glow of sunset - long after regular tourists have to return to shore.

Our special permits also allow us to explore wherever we want along the

dramatic coastline, head out to find dolphins, sea lion colonies, outcrops

of rock covered in terns, cormorants, kelp-gulls, giant petrels and 180

other species of birds!

We’ll only be doing this marine photography for part of this week however,

as whenever the weather’s not great - or if we want a chance of scene -

we’ll head inland on various different day tours, exploring the local

Peninsula Valdez. We’ve organised private access with a ranger right

down onto the gravely beach (below the cliff-top viewing platform) where

the huge Elephant Seals hang out. We’ll photograph the enormous bull

‘Beach Masters’ hopefully rearing up to fight for dominance and territory,

the adorable big-eyed pups suckling, and try to freeze the moment when

these seals flip arcs of sand over the top of themselves to keep cool. If

we’re lucky, we might even see orca as they patrol the shore. Patagonian

foxes also hang around, as well as mara (like a hare crossed with a tailless

Kangaroo), Darwin’s lesser rhea (giant flightless bird similar to an emu),

guanako (A type of Llama), armadillos, skunks and of course plenty more

birds like crested tinamou, turkey vultures and more!

This first week is jam-packed, but any ‘spare time’ you manage to find,

there’s plenty to do in this area from fascinating information centers to

lovely little cafes, and you’ll have plenty of photos to go through anyway,

with us on hand to teach you some new tricks!

Day 7: To El Calafate

CHRIS BRAY PHOTOGRAPHY | PATAGONIA03

Today we’ll depart from Trelew (Argentina) and catch a short flight to

El Calafate, arriving in time to explore the village this afternoon before

transferring to our accommodation (the Posada Los Almos Hotel) for

the next two nights. Tonight we’ll have dinner at one of the favourite

restaurants in town, La Couzina.

Page 5: PATAGONIA - Chris Bray Photography › downloads › patagonia_photo_tou… · Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug. Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures

Today we’ll drive to Torres del Paine National Park, another UNESCO world heritage site, also home to an abundance of wildlife including guanacos and

possibly even the elusive Puma. It boasts a huge diversity of birds including eagles, hawks, lesser reheas, buzzards, flamingo and South American condors

that have returned from the brink of extinction. In fact, en route, near the border of Chile, we’ll stop at a Condor viewpoint to photograph these majestic

birds!

The real draw card to this area is its incredible landscapes. The Torres del Paine igneous granite rock spires are millions of years old and dominate the

views of South America’s first National Park. Surrounded by photogenic azure lakes, emerald forests, raging rivers and radiant blue glaciers, you’re in the

middle of a picture-perfect postcard.

Day 9: To Torres del Paine National Park

To give us the best possible chance of spotting the elusive Puma we have allocated 4 full days here and are being accompanied by one of the best Puma

spotters in the business. In fact, our guide is so good and so well known in this area that we have had to hire our own undercover ‘hire’ cars, as if we used

his car we would be frequently stopped and followed by others seeking the same prize of the Puma. Every day we will be trying our luck at photographing

the puma and will hopefully also come across other animals too like the grey and red fox, hairy armadillo, hog-nosed skunk, Chilean flamingo, Magellanic

woodpecker, austral parakeet, austral pygmy owl, ringed kingfisher, black-chested bussard eagle, crested caracara and more!

We’ll also have time to explore some of the hidden gems within the national park so we can photograph the dramatic landscapes from various different

angles – without having to walk too far! There’ll be waterfalls, glaciers, iceberg, forests, mountains, black sand beaches, azure lakes and more

Part of the beauty of travelling with a small group of like-minded photographers is that we have the flexibility to spend just as long or short as we want at

each location, free to stop to get out and photograph whenever we see something interesting.

On one of our four full days here we’ll hop on board a boat tour to visit the o Lago Grey Glacier, a glacier in the southern Patagonian ice field. At over 30m

high it’s certainly spectacular. With any luck we might even see some ice calve off into the lake of the same name, so keep your cameras ready!

Day 10 - 13 - Torres del Paine National Park

CHRIS BRAY PHOTOGRAPHY | PATAGONIA 04

That’s it I’m afraid! This morning we’ll drive to Punta Arenas where we’ll drop you at your hotel or at the airport for your flight home any time after 2PM.

Where did those 14 days weeks just go? Well, I guarantee you’ll have thousands of amazing photos to flick back through to remind yourself, forever, of

one of the best journeys of your life!

When we say that after Punta Arenas we all fly home – Chris Bray Photography actually start their very next tour, their incredible ‘Galapagos, Amazon

and Hummingbirds’ tour straight after, so perhaps while you’re already in South America some of you’d like to join our team for the double-whammy?!

Day 14: That’s it

Day 8: Perito El Calafate

This morning we’ve arranged a private tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier, a glacier located in Los Glaciares National Park in southwest Santa Cruz Province.

It’s an amazing glacier, 250 square kilometres and is the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water. It’s also one of the few glaciers that is still advancing,

rather than retreating, and an incredible site to photograph. Tonight we’ll return to the Mirador Del Lago in El Calafate to get ready for the adventure to

continue in Chile tomorrow!

CHRIS BRAY PHOTOGRAPHY | PATAGONIA05

Page 7: PATAGONIA - Chris Bray Photography › downloads › patagonia_photo_tou… · Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug. Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures

Spanning both Argentina and Chile, Patagonia is home to fantastic mountain

peaks, vast and empty steppes, glaciers and icefields, and stunning national

parks. It is an incredible display of natural beauty.

About Patagonia

Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world, the second largest

in Latin America, and the largest Spanish-speaking one. The country

is subdivided into twenty-tree provinces and one autonomous city,

Buenos Aires.

Argentina is a megadiverse country hosting one of the greatest

ecosystem varieties in the world: 15 continental zones, 3 oceanic

zones, and the Antarctic region are all represented in it’s territory. This

huge ecosystem variety has led to biological diversity that is among

the world’s largest.

About Argentina

Area of Patagonia 1,043,076 km²

Average temp Puerto Piramides, Argentina: 10oC - 26oC

Average temp Torres del Paine, Chile: 4oC - 12oC

Time Zone: UTC offset of-3 hours. That puts it 13 hours behind AEST

(Sydney).

Currency in Chile: Chilean peso

Currency in Argentina: Argentine peso

Electricity Argentina: 220V-240V frequency 50 Hz, Type I

(interchangeable with the standards in Australia, however many non-

grounded sockets in Argentina are the ‘Type C’ European plug.)

Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug.

Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures in

November range between 10 - 26 degrees Celsius in Puerto Piramides,

Argentina and 4 to 12 degrees Celsious in Torres Del Paine, Chile.

Combine these cold temperatures with wind chill when we are out

doing boat trips and it can get extremely cold, so be prepared to layer

up.

Climate

CHRIS BRAY PHOTOGRAPHY | PATAGONIA 06

About ChileChile is among the longest north south countries in the world

bordering Argentina to the east. Southern Chile is rich in forests

and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes.

The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting

peninsulas, and islands. Chile is one of the Southern America’s most

stable and prosperous nations.

Page 8: PATAGONIA - Chris Bray Photography › downloads › patagonia_photo_tou… · Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug. Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures

Money and Currency ARGENTINA: Argentine Peso (ARS). It’s best to use a credit card at an

ATM when you need some cash. It’s a very cash-based society and

credit cards & travellers cheques are not widely accepted as day-to-

day payment.

CHILE: Chilean peso (CH$) and similar to Argentina it’s best to carry

some cash with you as credit cards are not widely accepted.

Don’t forget to let your bank know that you will be overseas. If your

bank is unaware that you’re in Argentina/Chile, they might suspend

your credit card the first time you try to use it, making it very hard to

get any money out at all.

Tipping: Tipping in the Argentina and Chile is polite and expected and

many workers rely on these tips to form part of their wage - particularly

in the hospitality and tourism industry. To save you the hassle of having

to worry about tipping the staff on our vessels, lodges, and driver

guides we have added these tips to the price of the tour and will pass

your tips onto the right people. Although we have included the

tips on your behalf, you are most welcome to give more and many of

your fellow travellers will, because, as you will find out, the driver guides,

boat crew and hotel staff are all fantastic. If you wish to give an extra tip,

just pass this onto us and we’ll pass it onto the captain for you.

InternetThere will be free wi-fi Internet connection at all the lodges we stay at.

However, in most lodges the internet is only available in the communal

areas like the lounge or reception and because we are staying in some

very remote places the speed might not be what you are used to at

home.

As far as mobile reception goes – if you really need to be contactable

via phone, the best option is to set your mobile up for global roaming

before you depart. Note that, depending on your plan, this could make

calls and texts expensive or separate from your cap. To set this up, all

you need to do is call your mobile service provider and ask them to

turn on global roaming before you leave your home country. To avoid

substantial data roaming fees, it’s a good idea to turn ‘data’ off on your

phone when overseas, and keep calls short. It might not be a bad idea

to re-record your voicemail message before you go too, just so that if

anyone tries to contact you, they will know that you’re busy having fun

in Patagonia!

Generally speaking, there is not much cell phone coverage in Patagonia,

it might only be when you are closer to the major towns you receive

service.

Mobile phone reception

In general crime is not a problem in the places that we visit, so there

is little to be concerned about. However if you are transiting through

Buenos Aires or Santiago, before or after the tour, and like any major

city where the divide between rich and poor is quite significant there will

be opportunistic thieves. It’s just about being travel smart - don’t leave

your bag unattended and don’t walk around the city with expensive

jewellery, cameras, passports or wallets with credit cards and heaps

of cash.

Safety

CHRIS BRAY PHOTOGRAPHY | PATAGONIA07

Page 9: PATAGONIA - Chris Bray Photography › downloads › patagonia_photo_tou… · Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug. Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures

There will be electricity to recharge your cameras, laptops etc. each day. To

make this process quicker we suggest you bring a power board that has a

surge protector so you can charge all of your electronics at the same time.

Surge protectors are a very good idea when travelling overseas. While

we’ve not had any bad experiences in Patagonia, using a surge protector

when charging things like a laptop will help prevent any electricity spikes

damaging your electronics.

ARGENTINA: 220V-240V frequency 50 Hz, Type I (interchangable with the

standards in Australia, however many non-grounded sockets in Argentina

are the ‘Type C’ European plug.)

CHILE: 220V-240 Type C - Eurropean plug.

Smoking

Electricity and Power

While we don’t ban smoking on our tours, we generally encourage

guests not to smoke on tour if possible. If you do choose to smoke

while on tour, we just ask that you be mindful of your fellow tour guests

by smoking discreetly in designated smoking areas away from the

group, communal dining areas and accommodation rooms (particularly

if sharing a room with someone else on the tour). Some of our past tour

guests have actually decided to use our tour as an opportunity to cut

back on their smoking habit or quit altogether and have seen lasting

results upon returning home. Why not give it a shot!? We’ll be cheering

you on from the sidelines. :)

We strongly advise you check entry requirements with your specific

passport.: https://www.visahq.com.au/

A valid passport is required for Australian citizens to enter Argentina.

While no visa is required, the Argentinean Government has introduced

a “Reciprocity Fee/Rate” costing $100 USD which needs to be obtained

before arrival. This can be done at the following website http://www.

migraciones.gov.ar/ (click the USA flag for English version, then scroll

down to find the Reciprocity Rate link). Without this you will be refused

entry into Argentina!

Australian tourists entering Chile through Santiago International

Airport are required to pay a “reciprocity fee” of approx $117 USD at

the airport however no visa is needed.

In any case, make sure your passport has at least six

month’s validity from your planned date of return to

Australia and a blank page.

If you are travelling to Chile / Argentina through the

United States of America, you are required to meet

US entry/transit requirements. Make sure you check

your visa requirements with the nearest US Embassy

or Consulate well in advance of your travel.

Generally in South America plumbing has very low pressure, and putting

toilet paper into the bowl is a serious no-no. Always put your used toilet

paper into the basket / bin provided (it’s always better than a clogged and

overflowing toilet!) These bins will be changed daily.

ImmunisationsIt’s best to consult with your travel doctor and work out what

immunisations are best for you. However, after doing some

research and discussing with our doctor, below is a starting point.

• Hepatitis A injection - (last’s a life time) definitely worth

getting! Many of you may already have this.

• A Tetanus injection - is also worth getting (they last about

10 years so check when you last had a booster shot), and in Australia

the Tetanus shot is free and also contains a Diphtheria immuniser

in the single injection! Yay – less needles! Diphtheria & pertussis

vaccines can be added to the tetanus vaccine. Because many adults

no longer have immunity from childhood vaccination, travellers to

less developed countries are advised to have a tetanus, diphtheria

& pertussis booster.

• And just for the plane flights etc, it might not be a bad idea

to have the latest influenza vaccine injection too – it’d be devastating

if you were too sick to enjoy the experience just because you caught

the flu on the way over!

• Yellow Fever injection – (Injection lasts 10 years, costs

about $55 and needs to be injected at least 2-3 weeks before you

leave for Argentina) this immunisation comes with a certificate that

you need to KEEP WITH YOU when travelling into Argentina and

importantly returning back home to PROVE that you are immunised

and thus not bringing yellow fever into Australia! Interestingly, it

seems that the Y.F. vaccine also has the added bonus that it helps

protect against melanoma skin cancers later in life!

Page 14: PATAGONIA - Chris Bray Photography › downloads › patagonia_photo_tou… · Electricity Chile: 220V-240 Type C - European plug. Weather in Patagonia can be highly variable. Temperatures

Accommodation arrangements vary for each location, however it is all twin-share. So if you’re booking on your own then expect to share a room with

someone else. If you’re booking as a couple then we can organise a double bed, rather than two singles - just let us know. For solo travellers we can’t

guarantee that we’ll always be able to have you sharing with someone of the same sex - it depends on the gender split, but we do our best. You can request

a single supplement (a room to yourself) - just email us and we’ll let you know the extra cost. Keep in mind though that a) you’re only usually in your rooms

to sleep as we fill your waking hours with plenty to do, and b) the couple of times we have had clients get rooms for themselves, they end up regretting it

when they see the amazing friendships that form between other roomies.

We’re always trying to secure you the highest standard in accommodation, however, in both the Torres del Paine Chile and Puerto Piramids, its remote

location with limited options requires us to stay in guest houses / basic hotels (i.e, just one 2-3 stars). Where we stay in Torres del Paine Chile gives us the

closest access to some of the best areas to see the Puma and where we stay in Puerto Piramids gives us panoramic ocean views where we might even see

whales outside our bedroom window. All accommodation will of course be clean and comfortable, but we ask that you keep things in perspective in relation

to the remote areas we are travelling in. We’ll survive. =)

Accommodation arrangements

The exact order of the itinerary may be shuffled around and tweaked due to weather etc., but you can be rest assured that we’ll be working flat-out to

get you to all the best places, for the best photos possible.

Moderate+, You do need to be able to get in and out of boats, clamber

down sand dunes onto the coastline for the elephant seals, and wander

around for a morning or afternoon with your camera bag on your back.

Please email us if you have any questions or concerns about fitness for this

trip we can provide photographs and additional information.

Thank you = Gracias

Yes = Si

No = No

Hello = Hola

Considering we’ll be travelling around with our bags in the vehicles from

time to time between guesthouses, it’s always best to bring your non-

camera gear (clothes etc.) in a soft bag such as a duffle-bag or backpack

with wheels – please don’t bring a rigid suitcase, as they are awkward to

stash away. We use and recommend Osprey wheeled travel luggage bags

that you can purchase in store or online at Paddy Pallin, Australia (http://

www.paddypallin.com.au/). We only have limited space in the back of our

tour vehicles for luggage so we ask that you bring ONLY ONE CHECK-

IN BAG per person. Please ensure your bag is clearly labelled with your

name, just to ensure it turns up at the right room when we unpack the

vehicles. The more bags you bring the harder it is to keep track of them

all when we are travelling from A to B. Remember there will be airline

luggage restrictions.

The general rule for travelling anywhere should always be that (as much

as possible), bring all your critically important stuff with you as carry-on

luggage. This includes camera gear and anything else that would ruin your

experience completely if your main baggage was delayed etc. Of course

luggage delays are unlikely, but it provides peace of mind if you carry your

genuine ‘essentials’ with you.

You will need some comfortable, lightweight ‘Tour clothes’ to allow for

ease of mobility (to get down low for interesting shots, to climb in and out

of boats, cars etc). Pockets are useful for things like lens-caps, lens-cloths

etc. Long-sleeves (and full-length pants) will help keep the sun off (and

keep you warmer) and are a great idea. You’ll find that your main clothes

will be a couple of lightweight, loose pairs of full-length tour pants and

similarly tops and, depending on the weather, thermals & jackets.

Don’t forget to bring a warm fleece, a really warm jacket (like a down

jacket), thermals, gloves, beanies, scarfs, woollen socks and good

wet weather gear like a good quality raincoat and rain pants too. Just

remember we’re here to see things, not be seen! =) Think long and hard

about what gear to take, as you don’t want to be lugging too much stuff

around!

And last but not least, don’t forget a hat! Make sure it’s a wide-brimmed

hat – and ideally without too stiff a brim (and certainly not a peaked

baseball cap) as these stiff brims get in the way when you try and hold

your camera up to your face. A draw-cord on your hat is not a bad idea, as

it can get a bit windy on the boats!

What kind of bags do I bring?

Washing

Clothing

Don’t worry you wont have to bring 14 shirts and 14 pairs of undies!!!

There are facilities for your washing – services are an additional cost. .

getting wet when kneeling down for low shots, even if it’s not raining, and it

probably will!). We use and recommend Gore-Tex and it’s great if your rain

pants and raincoat have waterproof zips for added protection.

Rain cover for your camera and lens

A good pair of sturdy comfortable closed in walking shoes. The terrain can be

sandy, rocky, slippery and steep.

Sunscreen, mozzie repellent, lip moisturiser with sunscreen i.e. Blistex,

Sunglasses (polarised will be best!), an eye shade/mask (to help you sleep

during the late sun – you’ll probably be given one on your long-haul flight to

the tour though!) and ear plugs (if you are sharing a room!).

Reusable water bottle.

Code of conductThe aim of the tour is to have a really enjoyable time learning and

practising photography with like-minded people, shooting some

of the most amazing subjects in the world and lapping up a few of

life’s little luxuries. An aim of CBP is also to appreciate the natural

world in a sustainable manner, so future generations can continue

to experience its beauty. Please help us ensure everyone has a

great time by cooperating with us in the following.

Please don’t handle, feed or harass the wildlife. When viewing the

wildlife please keep noise down to a minimum. Don’t surround,

chase or approach the animals too closely. Excitedly jumping

around and shouting at how amazing it is will only cause the

animals to disappear, much to the annoyance of your fellow

travellers! We are here to photograph the animals, not stress

them out.

Be considerate of the other group members at all times. Share

the best vantage points.

An absorbent travel towel is also a great accessory to have handy in your camera bag to quickly give your camera a wipe down after any rain

/ sea spray or whale blow. Atka have many different travel towels in different sizes and colours (http://www.gearsupply.com.au/products/

outdoor/atka/ultra-fast-dry-towels/c-25/c-90) use promo code GSCHRISB10 for 10% off!

You can read more about what camera equipment we recommend bringing on our International Camera Information document but we highly

recommend a good wide, standard and telephoto lens and any other speciality lens i.e macro that you might want as well. Please feel free to

email [email protected] to discuss this in more detail if you would like.

“Take only photographs, leave only footprints.” Where possible

please stay on the designated footpaths and walkways. Please

WHY BOOK A CBP TOUR

We’re Australia’s largest and most-loved photo tour operator for a reason. We offer the highest quality, small-

group, unique operations focused on providing the access and luxuries the others don’t - such as exclusive

charter of ships, planes & helicopters (doors-off for better photography) along with off-road & special access

permits to get you closer - so we can give you what we know you want. For example, while other operators

might book you a spot on a busy, regular scenic cruise, we’d privately charter the whole boat, relaxing the pace,

giving you plenty of space and modifying the route for the best photogenic locations and timings. We delight in

welcoming you to beautiful accommodation and providing fantastic food and other luxuries to ensure the tour is

as much a wonderful holiday as it is a photographic experience.

Always putting you and your photos first! There to help out with any issues or check your images and suggest ways you could improve

Unlike most, we’re fully accredited and

insured, obtain all the proper permits,

respect and give back to the communities

and environment, and employ industry

best-practises such as holding your

payments in a trust-fund, and have been

awarded the tick from the Accredited

Tourism Business Australia (Australian

national symbol of tourism quality).

“I’d go back in a heartbeat...”“What an incredible experience! They helped improve every facet of my photography. Thank

you again for another amazing trip - I would go back in a heartbeat.” R. English

“You’ve done it again...”“You’ve done it again! Patagonia is just stunning, no words to describe it. The first week was

absolutely AMAZING! Puerto Piramides is truely a slice of paradise, from Southern Right

Whales breaching and coming up so close to the boat, you could touch them, seals, elephant

seals, penguins, different types of birds, Guanaco’s and Armadillo.....Everyone should come,

such a great country!” C. Starky

Perhaps one of the key differences our guests keep saying is how we - unlike so many other operators - always put YOU and YOUR photos first, always

there to help out with any issues or check your images and suggest ways you could improve - never getting in your way or even taking any photos

ourselves unless every single guest is content. Our friendly pro photography guides are all young, energetic and up-to-date (unlike some old has-

beens out there!) and are a pleasure to be around. Our goal is to help YOU have the best experience possible, improving YOUR photography, and

helping YOU take the best photos!

If you’re still not convinced, then ask anyone who’s come away with us - our repeat guest rate speaks for itself: We’ve had entire tours sell-out solely

with repeat guests.
