SEPTEMBER 2017

As I write this article, it is Tuesday, August 29, and Hurricane Harvey has been

in Texas for four days. Currently, Harvey has gone somewhat back out into the

Gulf, but will most likely be coming back to the Texas coast and continue

showering with heavy rains. Let us all be in prayer for the families located on

the Texas coast. Let us all be in prayer for the rescue teams working around

the clock to take care of those in need of support. God is in the midst of this

situation, guiding and supporting all the people in need and the rescue teams.

Thanks be to God!

Looking back on my first two months at TUMC, I just want to thank all the

volunteers that supported our Vacation Bible School ministry and our BBQ

ministry this summer. Both were such a wonderful blessing for our two

churches and community! I am looking forward to our Blessing of the Animals

service that is happening on Sunday, September 10 at 9:15 am. Please be sure

to invite friends and family to this wonderful time together with our precious

pets!

Finally, I want to lift up our two churches in prayer as we prepare for the

departure of our brothers and sisters at St. John. We at TUMC are excited for

the future of the St. John congregation as they merge with St. Luke. We all will

miss dearly the wonderful times we have had together as a Joint Venture

ministry. May God bless each of our congregations as we go forward into our

new journey in Christ!

Blessings,

Pastor Jay

Our friends at Trinity United Methodist Church: Gloria; Jessica Huse and her family; Kevin; Ardys; Ruth; and Richard.

We pray for:

all those who suffer that they find respite from their physical and mental pains, that God fill their hearts with hope and assurance for the future;

those who are or have been ill; persons undergoing treatments, recovering from surgery, our far-away friends, and nursing home residents and staff;

those who lack access to clean water, children living in poverty, and those without enough food;

workers who are not treated fairly;

students and teachers as they return to school;

outdoor citizens and victims of gun violence;

those whose lives have been impacted by hurricane/tropical storm Harvey including Early Response Teams, disaster coordinators, and volunteers;

empowering the church with grace, hope, and healing, in nations experiencing turmoil or unrest, and those living under oppressive leadership;

refugees, orphans, and immigrants terrified for their own safety, or anxious about deportation, that they receive humanitarian assistance from our church and government agencies charged with their care;

those families and victims who suffer as the result of war, violence, and terrorist attacks, and those who willingly serve others;

persons experiencing the effects of hate and bigotry, that we hear their fears and see their wounds so that we are able to take action;

the leaders throughout the world, those in positions of authority, including Governor Brown, President Trump, and all those in government positions;

guidance for the missions and pastors of St. John, Trinity, and The Very Good Korean Methodist Church;

strength for our church leaders around the world, including ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton; ELCA Bishop Mark Holmerud; UMC Bishop Minerva Carcaño; and the Reverend Shinya Goto, the new UMC El Camino Real District Superintendent.

God, lead us in discerning our way forward in mission for your world. Amen.

The Fall season is upon us, a wonderful time to anticipate the many holidays coming up, including our Holiday Party on November 19. Robert Louis Stevenson romanticized:

Sing a song of seasons! Something bright in all! Flowers in the summer, Firelight in the Fall!

Executive Meeting—September 12 For Trinity UMW, we are back together on the second Tuesday, September 12, and will gather in Room 1, 9:30 am. Jane Dredge will preside as our staunch Rotating President.

Interested in being a TUMC Small Group Leader? We are looking for folks who are interested in facilitating one of our new small groups that will be forming over the next few months. You do not need to have any small group experience to be a small group leader. Pastor Jay will be training the small group leaders and providing curriculum to support the groups. Pastor Jay will also continue to support the small group leaders throughout the year.

If you have any interest in being a small group leader, sign up at church, contact the church office or Pastor Jay. You can even attend the leader training as a method of discernment, and then after the training, decide whether you would like to continue as a small group leader.

This month we are taken back in time to the mid 1800's, to an affluent household composed of a young woman, her widowed father, played by Ralph Richardson, and the father's recently widowed sister, played by Miriam Hopkins. The young lady, played by Olivia DeHaviland, lacks all the social graces and beauty her mother had, and her father worries about how she will get along in life. And then she meets a young and handsome young man, played by Montgomery Clift, at a family party, who apparently falls for her. But her father suspects the young man's motives, thinking he may be a fortune hunter.

This movie won four Oscars: for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Music. In addition, it was nominated for the Oscar in Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Join us for The Heiress (1949), a story of passion and possible betrayal, Friday the 8th of September. And don't forget the goodies!

Catherine Sloper ascends the stairs in the final scene.

Have you looked at the bulletin boards in Rooms 1, 2, and 3? Room 1 has the display of “Welcome” cards made by the children for Pastor Jay. There are also Easter Egg Hunt photos and graduate photos. Room 2 has photos of the children playing some of the games this summer and having fun with bubbles.

Room 3 has one of the largest quilts made by Sunday School children who, by now, are all adults! It would be great to have a current photo of those artists and post them by the quilt square they made in 1998. The quilt was finally stitched in 2002. I will be contacting the families for current photos.

Duet Sunday School Returns at 9:45 am on September 17. Our plan is to provide Sunday school for children through high school age. Watch for more information to come.

2017 Directory for St. John and Trinity has been distributed to our local members and constituents. To update the information contained in the directory, please call the church office or send email to [email protected] or [email protected].

Giving Opportunities are provided for Lutherans and United Methodists for Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief. Lutheran Disaster Response encourages giving through St. John ELCA or make your check out to Lutheran Disaster Response and send to ELCA in America, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 1809, Marrifield, VA 22116-8009.

Trinity is accepting donations to UMCOR. Write “Hurricane Response, US” on your check’s memo line. Alternatively, you can give donations directly to UMCOR’s relief and recovery efforts: US Disaster Response, Advance 901670 at umcor.org/donate. You can credit Trinity UMC for your donation on line. Gifts to UMCOR go 100% to relief efforts.

Five Things You Can Do. 1. Pray for those whose lives have been impacted

by Harvey. Also pray for Early Response Teams, disaster coordinators, and the volunteers who are working tirelessly to provide relief.

2. Make relief kits. Download the packing list and shipping label at umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies.

3. Give to Lutheran Disaster Response or UMCOR’s relief and recover efforts.

4. Donate only those items requested. 5. Wait for an invitation to volunteer.

Slow Down! Recently we have observed speeding and several near-misses in our church parking lot! Please enter our parking lot from Manet, slow down at the entrance, and keep your speed under 10 mph. In addition, please park within designated parking spaces, do not back into the spaces, and lock your car. Auto burglary continues to rise and are almost always crimes of opportunity. Leaving valuables in your vehicle instantly makes your car a target for thieves. It only takes a few seconds for you to remove your valuables and secure your vehicle.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

On Sunday, August 20, one of the songs we sang at St. John’s worship service was All Are Welcome by Marty Haugen. At a time when our country is going through such a lack of acceptance of people of varying backgrounds, this song struck a cord with all of us.

Well, the neighborhood cat, Pico, took it seriously as well and joined our service. Pico sat in front of Robin, listening to every word as she read the scripture.

When Pastor Peggy preached the sermon, Pico was a bit more relaxed as he listened to her interpretation of the Gospel.
