When we come to our celebration of today I have been asked in the past if we are celebrating "Palm Sunday" or "Passion Sunday". The answer to that question is "yes". The technical title for today is "Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord". We celebrate both the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem as well as his suffering and death on the cross. At the beginning of the Mass with the blessing of the palms and reading of the Gospel of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem we have the celebration of "Palm Sunday". Then in place of the normal Gospel read-ing with the reading of the Passion we have the "Passion Sunday" part of the celebration. So we are celebrating both - Palm Sunday and Pas-sion Sunday. What always strikes me about these two celebrations in one is the faithfulness of Jesus to God's will whether the people are chanting "hosanna" or "crucify him", and the fickleness of the people who quickly change their chant from "hosanna" to "crucify him". Wheth-er things are comfortable or not Jesus remains faithful to God while I doubt that the same can be said for those whose voices are chanting. For those who ask when does the season of Lent end, the answer is when the Mass of the Lord's Supper begins on the evening of Holy Thursday. When we begin this Mass we are no longer in the season of Lent but are now entering into what we call the "triduum" or "three days" in Latin. These three days are Holy Thursday (beginning at sunset or with the beginning of the Mass), Good Friday, and then Holy Saturday culminating with Easter morning. With Holy Thursday the focus is on the celebration of the Last Supper and what we call the "institution of the Eucharist" as it was at the Last Supper that Jesus "instituted" the Mass (i.e., created the celebration that we call today "the Mass" or "Eucharist"). Consider that the meaning of the Greek word from which we derive the word "Eucharist" means "to give thanks". Consider that knowing that he was to die Jesus paused with the Apostles to "give thanks" to God for what had happened and what was about to happen. On Good Friday we celebrate the "Passion of the Lord" in the afternoon as the focus of the service (not a Mass) is the death of Jesus and Jesus died in the afternoon. On Holy Saturday evening we begin our celebra-tion of Easter with the "Easter Vigil" which begins after dark on Saturday evening. This is the beginning of our celebration of Easter since accord-ing to the Gospels it was very early in the morning that the women went to the tomb and found the tomb empty and an angelic figure announcing to them that Jesus had been raised, and for the Jewish calendar a day began at sunset of what we would consider the prior day. I invite you to join us for the celebration of Holy Week this year. It is good this year that Holy Week doesn't fall during spring break. It is puz-zling to me how easily some can get time off to go away for spring break but how hard it is for them to find the time to celebrate what for us are supposed to be our holiest days of the year. But then that brings me back today to Palm/Passion Sunday. By what we do are we giving life to the fidelity of Jesus to God even in his suffering or the fickleness of the crowd when they become uncomfortable?
