From the Pastor’s Desk

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate Labor Day, a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers that have built up the strength, prosperity and well-being of our nation. While for many, this is a final chance to spend time at the lake and to relax, for many others it is a moment to be recognized for the work they do. Whether construction workers, factory workers, farmers, or other trades, we acknowledge the hard work you put into your work in order to provide for others.

While we often groan and complain about work, it’s important to note that God endowed work with great dignity. The Church has sought to safeguard that dignity by addressing the issues and challenges that laborers have faced in the workplace. In 1981 St. Pope John Paul II released his encyclical Laborem Exercens, which calls attention to the dignity and rights of those who work, condemns “situations in which that dignity and those rights are violated”, and seeks to guide change “so as to ensure authentic progress by man and society” (Laborem Exercens 1).

The document highlights four main themes: 1) The proper place of work in our life: Man was not created for work.

Rather, work is done for the good of man. When work itself becomes most important, it begins to strip man of his rights and dignity, reduces him to being a slave to the pursuit of profit, and takes away all incentive to pursue creativity and responsibility. But at the same time, work can be the means by which man expresses himself, contributes meaningfully to society, and provides for his family in a dignified manner.

2) The importance of the person over the processes and instruments of work: Workplaces face the danger of seeing workers as just another resource, less than human, like the machines they use. When industrialization was taking place in the late 19th century, the pursuit of wealth and growth caused workers to be subject to unsafe working conditions, many hours with little pay, and few rights. But we recognize that the good of workers is more important than the pursuit of profits, and workplaces should do everything reasonable to ensure this.

3) The rights of the human person as the determining factor for all things: This entails the need to take action against the injustices that may be present in a workplace or systemically, whether it’s unemployment, harsh working conditions, policies that harm employees, low wages, or injustices against women, immigrants or other groups. Workplaces have the responsibility to address failings within their own structures, and society has the responsibility to address more systemic failings.

4) The spiritual aspect of work: Human labor can be seen as a share in the work that God performed in the creation of the world, and when balanced with rest in order to enjoy the fruits of our labors, can be a source of great satisfaction. Further, our labor is an opportunity for us to identify with Christ in a special way, since He was a laborer, valued the dignity of those who worked, and called for justice in society. Even though labor can be hard, “by enduring the toil of work in union with Christ crucified for us, man in a way collaborates with the Son of God for the redemption of humanity. He shows himself a true disciple of Christ by carrying the cross in his turn every day in the activity that he is called upon to perform” (Laborem Exercens 27).

On this Labor Day, we thank those who work so diligently at their jobs to contribute to the building up and maintenance of our society. We pray that all workers may see the great dignity they have in their work. And we pray that God may bless all workers.

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

What is the Dead Theologians Society (DTS)? A Catholic apostolate for 8th grade through high school age teens. Through the Saints of yesterday, the Dead Theologians Society inspires the youth of today to become the saints of tomorrow. Its motto is, “Dead to the World, alive in Christ!” This is inspired by Romans 6:11 where St. Paul tells us to be dead to sin but alive in Christ Jesus. Come and have fun, learn about a rock star in the faith, eat well and spend time with Jesus.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us the second Sunday of each month from 6-9PM. We will be alternating the location between the Church of St. Mary, Le Center, the Church of the Nativity, Cleveland and St. Anne’s, Le Sueur: September 9 (Le Center), October 14 (Cleveland), November 11, December 9, January 13, February 10, March 10, April 14, May 12, June 9 (Locations to be decided soon for the November-June meetings).

Become an official member by attending 3 times in a row or 5 times total! As a member you receive an official sweatshirt, rosary, and scapular! (All pictured here). But even better, by being a member you will experience your love for God grow by leaps and bounds and form a foundation that will enable you to go out into the world knowing that God and the friendships you made in DTS will carry you through. Please contact Fr. Adams if you would like to attend or have questions.

All parishioners of all ages, come to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the DTS gatherings. We especially need adorers to commit to be before our Lord for an hour during the 6-9PM gathering time. Also, we need cooks willing to help make and serve a meal to the kids. If you are able to help in either capacity, contact Fr. Adams or the parish office and let us know.

Parish Stewardship Nominations for Pastoral Councils

On this weekend of September 1-2 and next weekend, September 8-9, we will be accepting nominations for 3 positions on the St. Mary Pastoral Council and 2 positions on the St. Henry Pastoral Council. Both councils have members whose terms are ending. New members will begin their 3-year term with the October 2018 meeting. Nomination slips will be found in the pews beginning this weekend and can be placed in the collection basket at Mass. Please feel free to nominate yourself or someone in the parish who you believe whose gifts are suited to leadership within our parishes and who would make a meaningful contribution to our parishes. All nominees must be registered, practicing members of their respective parish.

All nominated individuals will be contacted to determine that they accept the nomination before being placed on the final ballot. Parish voting will then take place on the weekends of September 22-23 and September 29-30. If you have any questions regarding the nomination/election process or the work of the Pastoral Council, please contact Fr. Shofner in the parish office. We give our thanks to the Pastoral Council members whose terms are ending. We are very grateful that they were willing to serve our St. Mary and St. Henry parishes in this important role. The outgoing St. Mary Pastoral Council members are Theresa Collins, Julia Gramling, & Barb Kavan. The outgoing St. Henry Pastoral Council members are Jayne Gehrke & Lloyd Stauff. Thank you!
