The Memory Verse for August “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” Hebrews 12:1‐2a I love watching the Olympics! The best athletes in the world coming together to represent their countries and perform at the highest levels of compe on makes me want to watch every chance I can. It doesn’t ma er if it’s Track and Field, Swimming, or Spelunking, there is something cap va ng and inspiring about people giving their all to reach a goal. This month we will focus on the faith described in Hebrews and running “the race that is set before us.” For most track athletes, the goal is not necessarily winning the race, but persevering and improving upon their personal records. If they win Bronze, Silver or even Gold in the process, that is an incredible accomplishment that few experience. The winning is actually in giving their best effort. There is a prize wai ng for us that is more spectacular than any medal. It is not won by effort, though. It is won by faith… and yet Paul encourages us to “run!” I pray that in the days ahead we will grow in our faith and give our best effort in all that we do ‐ school, work, rela onships, worship, service, rest ‐ to the glory of God. I want to thank you again for the wonderful welcome you gave to our family. July was like a whirlwind with moving, preaching, mee ng new people, Vaca on Bible School, Church Camp and a very special wedding. Your gracious hospitality and understanding have been a blessing! We are looking forward to our first Tyrone/Bellwood football game and 5th Quarter experience on August 26, and then Faith Day on August 27. Let’s join together in service to our community! KINDRED SPIRITS (Women's Group)—JOURNEYMEN! (Men’s group) Throughout August the Kindred Spirits Ladies group, joined by The Journeymen, are mee ng at 7 PM and doing different devo onal each week un l September 19, when they will go back to separate groups and separate studies. The Kindred Spirits will be doing “Looking for Lovely”. Childcare is available.

BEST LIFE NOW BIBLE STUDY – Will resume in September 2016.

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY – Meets every Wednesday at 7pm in the Church Pavilion, weather permi ng, or in the Church Parlor if not. We are currently studying Jonah, Joel and Amos. Beginning

July 6 we will be on Amos.

The last Wednesday of the month, we meet at the church at 6:30pm to carpool to the Veteran’s Home to visit with one of our Bible study members there.

GRAYSTONE COURT GROUP – Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Graystone Court in Tyrone for outreach ministry sponsored by Best Life Now. All residents & church members are welcome.

Truth Seekers – This is an adult Class which meets in the lower level.

They are beginning a study of Acts, including Andy Stanley videos.

Fellowship Class – This adult class meets in the Library and is studying

books of the Bible. They are currently in 1st Thessalonians. The teacher

is Dave Brisbin.

Youth (grades 6th thru 12th)– Teacher is Sharon Kimberling and is a Sunday School class for teens.

Kindergarten through 5th grade will be going through an all new VBS‐style Sunday School series called ” Cereal.” The commercials always tell us that cereal is a “part of a complete breakfast.” This series shows kids how, unlike cereal, Jesus is all we need to have a complete and joy‐filled life. We will be serving the kids the featured cereal of the day, along with a few other breakfast items each Sunday, June 5‐ Aug. 21. Sunday School for ALL ages meets following our 9am worship service, from 10:15‐11:30. Nursery – For infants to Kindergarten aged children. They meet in the nursery area. The teacher is Michelle Keith. Each week’s lesson includes a Bible story, ac vity, and prayer.

SUMMER SPECIAL MUSIC During the summer months when our choir takes a break, we

encourage others to sign up for special music in our worship service. If you would like to do so, please sign up on the schedule on the table in the narthex.

In 2015, 142 students were helped with supplies, plus TAES was supplied with

ssues, wipes, headphones, and various other school supplies. Please help again

by placing the requested items in the box in the narthex, the Tyrone Snyder Public Library, or other drop

boxes around the community, before August 1.

CHRISTIAN FAMILY FAITH DAY August 27, in downtown Tyrone, is organized by

Tyrone Events and Promo ons Commi ee and the Tyrone Area Coopera ve

Ministries and includes many ac vi es for the whole family (pancake breakfast,

prayer hike, music, family photo scavenger hunt, and lots more great church food!)

Good Shepherd will have a food booth. We need workers for shi s all day in the

booth, dona ons of food (watch for details on that), and some cash dona ons to

cover expenses. Dona ons marked for Faith Day can be placed in the offering plate.

This is a great opportunity to represent our church in our community—contact Harry Raling

([email protected] or 684‐2998) to be a part of this!

CONVERSATIONAL DINNERS We have had a request to start up the conversa onal Dinners again. This

helps the church family‐and a new pastor‐get to know one another be er. The list of

par cipants will be divided into groups of 4 each month and each group will meet for

a meal and conversa on. Each month you will be responsible for a different item

(host‐meat/main dish; others‐vegetable, salad, or dessert) and each month you will

be with different individuals or couples. It is nice to meet in a home but a park,

church pavilion, restaurant—whatever the group decides on is fine. The dinners are a

fun me to get to know one another! This ac vity is for individuals, couples or half a

couple—whoever would like to come. Please sign up on the table in the narthex.

New August 1st —The first Monday of each month the ladies will break from their study for a service

project. ALL LADIES are invited to par cipate. This me of fellowship is separate from the Kindred

Spirit’s study. For the first one, we will make cards to be distributed to the re rement villages in the

area. Many residents never receive any mail or visits and we want to help alleviate that in a small way.

IF YOU LIKE CRAFTS, a cricut (for embellishments) will be available along with cardstock, ribbons,

etc. to decorate the cards. Or bring your own supplies, if you wish.

IF YOU AREN’T “CRAFTY”—we s ll need the cards to be signed and put into envelopes so there’s

something for everyone to do while fellowshipping.

Come at 6 PM and join us for our monthly potluck with the Journeymen—if you like.

MOVIE NIGHT On August 19th a movie night is scheduled for 7 PM at the Hershberger’s. “The War

Room” will be the movie of the evening with popcorn, finger foods, and fellowship. As always, ALL

LADIES are invited to a end. More info to come closer to the date.

Looking for Lovely Bible Study by Annie F. Downs CollectingtheMomentsthatMatterAs Chris ans, we are not promised lives of ease and o en it takes a small moment of

beauty to regain hope and con nue on when life is chao c and unpredictable. Only

when we learn to spot the lovely in the midst of hardship can we experience the

transcendent peace of God that keeps us persevering when we want to give up.

In this 7‐session Bible study, Annie F. Downs examines the ordinary people of the

Bible—fishermen, gardeners, women, soldiers—to reveal the moments they found

beauty in the darkest circumstances and hope in God’s ming because they trusted

in this: He makes everything beau ful in His me.

The Family Closet In Ma hew 25:31‐46, Jesus tells the Parable of the Sheep and

the Goats. Part of this parable says that we will be blessed

when we clothe those who are in need.

The Family Closet does just that. We provide clothing and a warm welcome to individuals and families

throughout the area who are in need. It also provides us an opportunity to "Go Green" by recycling gently‐

worn clothing as well as new clothing. This service is offered for free, although dona ons are welcome, and is

available every Saturday from 9‐12.

This ministry serves an average of 15‐20 people each week. Staffers to rotate Saturday mornings are always

welcome and needed.

Volunteers are also always needed to sort and staff the Family Closet on a weekly basis.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION UPDATE ‐ Unfortunately we were informed by the Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church that Campbell has decided to discon nue the Labels for Educa on program. Neighborhood Center will con nue to save labels, but beginning August 2016 Campbell's will no longer put Labels for Educa on UPC’s on their products. The program isn’t expected to close un l August 2017, so please keep those labels coming. So far Neighborhood Center has over 386,000 labels in their bank.

Our church provides financial assistance to two missionary families. Brian and Jerilyn White, along with their three children, are serving with Macedonian Call in Uganda. Christy and Randy Shearer serve in Austria with TWR Europe. Please remember both families and their ministries in prayer.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Are you looking for a cool summer me ac vity? How about Christmas shopping? Opera on Christmas Child shoe boxes will be ready for filling in October, but many gi s are on sale now. Back‐to‐school supplies like pencil sharpeners and crayons are now plen ful in stores.
