These 40 days are to be used for prayer and repentance and reflection on the life of Jesus Christ. The readings also re- mind us of Jesus’ future glorification and of our own salvation. God’s love. It’s not quite as fun as Valen-tine’s Day, but truly there is great, great meaning here.

In the midst of Febru-ary which here in Wis-consin can be very gray and dreary, when we are tired of winter and look so forward to spring and sunshine and flowers, we find two celebrations about love. NURSE’S NOTES: Broken Hearts

willing to do child care in the nursery if needed? Would you commit to praying for this minis-try and the team?

We anticipate starting our next session the first week in March. We will be meeting at Bay View on Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm. I would be so happy to talk to you about this great oppor-tunity to help our church grow, to make a difference in our com-munity, and to be a part of help-ing hurting people find healing, happiness, and a new life- a great new life- in Jesus Christ. In His Service, LouAnn Brown, RN

our church and community, and I know He is blessing it. It is a wonderful way to get involved, and see God work before your very eyes! You don’t have to be a preacher, teacher, or counse-lor. The Videos do all that. What you do need to be is a caring, sharing, spirit filled Christian who knows from experience that all things are possible with God! And a willing listener.

There are many ways to join the DivorceCare team. We will be asking folks to commit to bring-ing a snack for the class. Just let Val Mosgaller know you are will-ing, pick a date, and sign up! Are you interested in being a discussion leader? Please see me for further information. Are you

there’s National Freedom Day along with President’s Day and Groundhog Day. There is also a White T-Shirt Day and a National Inventor’s Day in honor of Thom-as Edison’s birthday.

May your February be filled with lots of celebrations and lots of love!

Please feel free to stop in and vis-it me in the office and chat. My e-mail address is [email protected]. You can also call or text my cell phone: 920-562-2853.

In Christ’s Service, Pastor Beth Macha

Of course we are going to be thinking of hearts in February! But I want to talk to you about some broken hearts – people who will not getting flowers or candy, and made to feel special and loved on Valentine’s Day - People who are experiencing Separation or Divorce. Jesus comforts and heals us, and asks us to do show others the same compassion and comfort that He has shown to us. The DivorceC-are Class last fall was life chang-ing for all who participated, in-cluding the Leaders! As we are planning to start another cycle of DivorceCare in March, there are 3 participants waiting to join us, and we haven’t started mar-keting it yet! This is a ministry that God has called us to offer

ELCA presiding bishop issues response to President Trump’s “Peace to Prosperity” document “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6) I am very dismayed and disturbed by President Trump’s announcement of a “peace plan” that, I fear, will bring greater insecurity for Israelis and Palestinians instead of peace. Our church has long held that any successful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be based on negotiation between the parties. Unfortunately, this “plan” has involved only one party. A plan made for a people without consulting that people will not bring peace. It also seeks to remove from the table many of the final status issues by effectively giving a green light to Israel to further entrench the occupation, rather than end it, - a policy we have advocated for years. Rather than drawing together Israelis and Palestinians to reach a peace accord, the effect of this plan will be further alienation and, I am afraid, more tension, with the possibility of new, violent responses. This path will not lead to peace with justice. It will not promote reconciliation. But it will reinforce ex-tremists in Israel, in Palestine and throughout the region, decreasing security for everyone. Just last week, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo briefed the Security Council, noting:

“It is sadly not a surprise that a recent survey of millennials by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) found that almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of Israeli millennials thought the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would “never end”, making them the least optimistic of the people surveyed in countries affected by war. Palestinians were also pessimistic, although slightly less so, with 52 per cent believing that the conflict would never end.

“The international community bears a responsibility to help build a different future for these young Israelis and Palestinians, one that promises hope, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence rather than perpetual occupation and conflict.”

She closed by saying she “would like to emphasize the continued urgency of resolving the Pales-tinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, international law and bilateral agree-ments.”

Therefore, I call upon President Trump to develop a different plan that would involve all parties, and to pursue efforts that would adhere to international law and human rights conventions. This plan should ensure the protection and preservation of internationally rec-ognized human rights and realize, for Palestinians and for Israelis, two viable, secure states living side by side in peace.

CALLING ALL COOKS:

Lucille Kirkegaard has been in charge of making the Advent and Lenten luncheons here at Bay View for a number of years. However, she has decided that it is time to step back and to help raise up others to take on this task. She did make the Advent luncheon for us in December, but now we are looking for a person or persons to make the Lenten luncheons here in March and April. Lucille has said that she would be happy to help anyone who is willing to take this task on. Please talk to Cheryl in the church office or Pastor Beth or Lucille herself if you are interesting in helping or if you have any questions about what is involved. THANK YOU, Lucille, for this ministry in the past!

LET’S WAVE THE BUILDING MORTGAGE GOODBYE!

Our building mortgage is getting smaller. We have done well! In the beginning it was $817,000; now, 13 years later, thanks to your generous pledges and gifts, it is $64,000. The end is within reach! We have pledged money, always paid the mort-gage on time and even made some extra pay-ments. Now we have just four years remaining on our mortgage of $1,400 per month.

Please consider one more commitment. Could you make a financial pledge of an annual gift over the next four years? Or perhaps a gift this year, renewable, as you are able, in following years? Big whitecap-wave-sized gifts would help us pay off the mortgage in fewer months, and save interest expense. But, smaller ‘waves,’ even ripple-sized ones, combine to keep us on a steady course in meeting our monthly payments.

With just one more combined effort we can sink the mortgage and have our beautiful building paid in full. Thank you.

Greetings from Bayview's Call Committee

• I write to provide a quick update about Call Commit-tee business.

• The Call Committee met with Pastor Amy Engebose (Bishop’s Associate for Rostered Leadership and Con-gregations in Transition for the East Central Synod of Wisconsin) on 11/14/19 and she oriented the com-mittee to the call process.

• Pastor Amy serves as a matchmaker between congre-gations and candidates and will assist us in finding our new pastor. To date, we have not yet received any candidates names. It is most likely that we will receive candidate names after Easter, as Christmas through Easter is a very busy time for pastors!

• The Call Committee is working on finalizing our plans for interview questions.

• We plan to keep the congregation informed through periodic updates.

Best,

Luke Brown, Call Committee Chair

The Invention of Wings By, Sue Monk Kidd

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sa-rah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shap-ing each other’s destinies and forming a com-plex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, es-trangement and the uneasy ways of love.

Staff Report – Pastor Beth monthly report had little to re-port on. She did want to express that all meetings should be scheduled in the church office so that it can be added to the website calendar. In sharing the

meeting with the office, multiple room reservations can be avoid-ed.

Old Business Reviewing previous verbage of fundraiser activities at BayView was discussed to finalize and add as a ByLaw. ByLaw would be 13.09.A1 under #19.

Lucille went through past minutes from several years to get information and shared with council. The amendment is as follows, Bay View Lutheran Church council, an organization, and/or groups of members are permitted to sell on BayView property with approval prior to starting. Church Council will evaluate the need and/or pur-pose of the sale and monitor scheduling, duration, frequency and number of events. The next step would be to schedule the date, time etc. with the Church office so as to avoid conflicts. The purpose of sales must be to benefit projects and programs of BVLC, organizations of the ELCA, and affiliated organiza-tions; i.e. Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Social Services, or Feed/Clothe My People. Organi-zations not related to the con-gregation or its affiliated organi-zations are not permitted to sell within the church or 100 ft. from Church property.

Meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Greg Koelpien.

Attending: Greg Koelpien, Inter-im Pastor Beth, Paula Sullivan, Lucille Kirkegaard, Karen New-bern, Dawn Corbisier, Steve Kase, Karen Isensee, Renee McAllister, Al Wit-tenberg, Connie Baudhuin

Open Forum – Paula, Book keeper for BayView, was requesting that all mission members communicate more with each other and with the office. Liaisons also should be sharing information from council to each mission board. A couple of changes and miscommunication would save a lot of unnecessary extra work.

Pastor Beth led devotions. She found an article recently that would be great for this time of year. The article titled “Encouragement For The New Year.” That even though we may not know of what will come this coming year we can find faith in God. Much like Joshua who faithfully trusted God. Each of may encounter challenges but keep faithful and share the word of God.

Approval of agenda – Steve made motion to approve agen-da with addition of Fundraiser ByLaw under Old Business, Ka-ren N. seconded. Approved.

Approval of December 10, 2019 Minutes – A minor misspelling on Chuck Dull not Dahl. With change motion was made by Al to approve minutes, seconded by Connie. Approved.

Steve motioned to approve verbage of Resolution 13.09.A1 as above, seconded by Al. Ap-proved.

Clarification was needed on the $75 organist increase from last month. Worship committee ap-proved the one time increase and stated it will not have a yearly increase like other staff employees.

New Business Several building use requests were submitted this month. Nine request by: Sons of Nor-way, American Red Cross, Door County Partnership For Children & Families, Literacy Door Coun-ty, Saturday Al-Anon, Artists in Making, Alcoholics Anonymous, Bone Boys, and Girl Scout Troop 4315. Motion made by Al to ap-prove building use requests, se-conded by Karen N. Approved.

With two council members terms expiring this year, new candidates are needed. Council can ask and explain questions if needed to interested candidates.

The Bishop has received and confirmed paper for Donna’s Ordination. Also the gift of a stole has arrived in time for her ordination.

Discussion on quotes of an out-door LED sign presented. The LED sign would be two sided and have a brick design that matches the bell tower.

With the LED conversion there was a question about changing the carport lighting. Currently the light is connected to the en-trance light so that leaving the church there is no lighting for the last person. Suggestion to have a motion sensor light in-stalled in the

Bold Women of the ELCA

As a confirmed female member of an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) you are a member of the Women of the ELCA (WELCA). February is Bold Women Month with the forth Sun-day of February being Bold Women’s Day. What are you doing to celebrate the BOLD WOMEN in your life?

Some churches are using special liturgy. Some women send notes to other women they consider as bold women in their life, thanking them for all they do and what they represent to other wom-en. I sent out many cards last year to acknowledge these women. Here is a link to the ELCA web-site so you can look for ideas and read more about being a BOLD WOMAN: https://www.womenoftheelca.org/bold-womens-day

Each month in 2020 we will be addressing topics that the Women of the ELCA are lifting up. Please watch for these snippets of information and let me know what you have done as well. We will share ideas.

Leap Year Ann Marie Heinz

I am aware of several church com-mittees in need of new members. The church council is also looking for people willing to serve. Volun-teers and folks with new ideas and dedication are the life blood of a healthy church.

Jump into action! Take a leap of faith and test the unknown. Trust that whatever you do to strengthen the life of your church will be re-warding to you and beneficial to all.

Happy hopping!

isn’t delivered. Also I miss the good old days when we celebrat-ed Lincoln’s and Washington’s days separately. Just saying.

Perhaps this Leap Year, we should leap! In the way many of us make resolutions in January, we could leap into something new in Feb-ruary. We can leap into a new book, or a new hobby. Or make the leap to encourage a new friendship with someone we’ve been meaning to get to know better. We can leap many times and in many different directions. After all, this is leap year. There is time to make positive bounces all over the place. February is just the jumping off point. (ha ha)

We should consider leaping into action in our own church. Right now we are desperately in need of “leapers.” (I know it looks like “lepers” but it isn’t.) As I write this

It happens every four years; we get an extra day in February. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have found no real benefit to an extra day in February.

February is a cold and dreary month. It’s the last official month of the winter season. And even though spring doesn’t really begin on March 1

st, it’s

nice to get there. This year we have to wait an extra day to even situate ourselves into the first month of the spring season.

So, what to do with a longer February? Valentine’s Day is a good diversion from the winter blahs. But it’s in the middle of the month and lasts only one day. Presidents’ Day is a nice break for folks whose school dis-tricts or workplaces observe it. But for the rest of us it’s just an-other regular day except mail
