Dear Coach Porter,

You were an inspiration to us-from jog-a-thon to volleyball, from hoop-a-thonto field day-thank you for giving us your time and your passion, and teaching us to love sports.

Here are some inspirational words from Yogi Berra to take with you in your future endeavors:

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”“It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

“Thank you for making this day necessary.”

Coach Porter

In 1996, I arrived at Turning Point just about to turn three

and not sure about trying anything new, particularly when it came to

sports. During my ten years at Turning Point, you really encouraged

me to try my best. Whether it was field hockey, running the

mile (uggh), or shooting baskets for Hoopathon, you always

were an enthusiastic but demanding coach. The payoffs have

been big – being a member of the Turning Point Volleyball Team

when they won the Pacific Basin League Championship in 2005-2006

is an experience that I will always remember. It was hard work

(and you did yell) but the thrill of working with that team

was very special. It showed me that working hard has big rewards!

Today, as I compete on the Marlborough Equestrian Team

and helped them win their very first league championship,

I still remember many of the things you taught me about

staying focused, trying hard, and what it means to be

a member of a team. Thank you for being a great coach.

Good Luck in your new adventures.

Love,

MARISSA VITALE

Coach Porter was one of the greatest teachers I’ve ever had on and off the field. He was always there to tell anyone they could do anything

if they only tried and gave it their all. He could make anyone feel instantly happy and always had a smile at the end of the day. He will be missed by all at Turning Point

now and from the past. I am sure he will have a terrific experience traveling around the world and taking some much needed time for other great adventures!

Thank you for everything, Coach Porter, and for helping so many of us reach our greatest potential.

CARL T. LYON ’97

John Wooden, a hero of yours, is well know for his definition of success: “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction

in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

I consider you to be the finest coach of all time (finer than Wooden) because of your change to Wooden’s definition of success: “Success is HAVING FUN,

which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

Words cannot express how thankful I am that you enabled me to meet, play with, compete with, and HAVE FUN with my heroes (Rob, Kevin, Rio and you to name a few).

It has filled me with a confidence that I continue to take with me into every aspect of my life.

Thank you Porter.

I must credit Danny Porter for sparking my initial interest in athletics and fitness. As a member of Danny’s 5th and 6th grade teams twelve years ago, I learned to feel comfortable

in sports and more confident in myself. I am very grateful to Danny for his unconditional encouragement both on and off of the court and for his persistent love for Turning Point students.

Danny, Turning Point will never be the same without you.

Congratulations on this next chapter of your life!

-ALEXA RABIN

I am so thankful for you, Danny, as I know that you always encouraged me to excel in everything,no matter how important it was to me. You helped me develop and establish a competitiveness

that has not only helped me thrive in athletics, but life as well.

Danny, congratulations on this next step in life, Turning Point and I will forever be thankful.

-HARRIS RABIN

Coach Porter:Below is an excerpt from Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Place You’ll Go! We thought that it says it all!

We will miss you and wish you the best on your next adventure.ALEK & LUKAS BERG

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Congratulations!

Today is your day.

You're off to Great Places!

You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

You’ll look up and down streets. Look ’em over with care.

About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.’

With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,

you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any

you’ll want to go down.

In that case, of course,

you’ll head straight out of town.

It’s opener there

in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen

and frequently do

to people as brainy

and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen,

don't worry. Don’t stew.

Just go right along.

You’ll start happening too.

OH!

THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

Page 30: Passport to Retirement
Page 31: Passport to Retirement
Page 32: Passport to Retirement

As you move on to new, fun things,We offer you our heartfelt thanks,

And hope for you the best life brings,For what you’ve given to our ranks.

You’ve taught them rules and how to play,That playing well requires work,To win or lose in gracious way,And never stoop to be a jerk.

The tools and knowledge you have given,To compete, yet enjoy sports,

Are skills our kids will take with them,Beyond the fields and courts.

You helped them learn to share and shine,You helped them to value fair play,

But no excuse to quit or whine,When some calls don’t go their way.

What to be a trusted team-mate takes,And a worthy opponent too,This, a better person makes,

It’s what’s required to get them through.

As they move on down life’s trail,You’ve helped our children to learn why,

That the only way to fail,Is to fail to simply try.

For all this we need to say,’til our paths will cross again. All these years and past today,In our hearts you will remain.

Farewell to Coach Porter

THE GONZALES FAMILY

Page 33: Passport to Retirement

Dear Coach Porter,

You have truly been an inspiration to me. You have taught me how to be not only an excellent athlete, but a great person as well. You have been my coach ever since the 1st grade and will always be my favorite coach. Your volleyball skills and techniques have made me the volleyball player I am today

and P.E. workouts were always a blast and got me into shape while having fun. Coach Porter, your passion about working out and athletics has given me an appreciation for sports.

I would not have been involved in sports if it was not for you. You introduced me to my favorite sports, that I continue to compete in even today, and made them so enjoyable that

I have been able to find the fun in even the worst of activities (like running) because I know it will make me a better athlete.

Basically, I just want to say a big thank you for all of this, you are the reason for my love of sports. So thanks!

Love,NATHALIE SIMON

Simply CoachIn the face of devastating odds – what keeps a man trying?

Those that can reach down into their souls and bring back that which is true, honest, beyond this world’s grasp – inspire nations and drive passion…

But what visionary holds the answer to this place?Men jaded by this world – loose the ability to bend nature’s rules…Spirits rot from daily grinds and shepherds leave flocks for gold…

Who is left to inspire the heart and teach these mystical lessons of life…Who among these mortals dare challenge this world’s mediocrity?

They simply call them Coach…– Robert Sellers

Dear Coach Porter,

You always inspired the hearts of our children.

Love, BRIAN, BENNETT AND BRENDA GROSS

Page 35: Passport to Retirement

Coach, the first thing I’d like to say is that I am very, very lucky. I am so lucky because I have had the opportunity to be taught by a tremendous coach like you.

I am very happy for you that you will be experiencing some new and amazing things. Traveling with Jenna will be fun for you, I know. Although I am going to miss you terrible,

I will always remember, and cherish the moments we’ve shared. I still have the memory of you teaching me my first overhand serve.

I still have the memories of you introducing yourself on my very first day of school, camp, bringing your watermelon on completely random days,

and I remember all the hugs you have given me! These are things I’ll never forget. Good luck in the future, remember to visit!

All my love,

ELSIE ROSE HEWITT

“There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life. But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint.

So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be.”

– George Sheehan

Dear Coach Porter:

The enthusiasm and spirit you put into interactions with your students, colleagues and fellow Turning Point parents was clear to us from our first meeting with you.

From this impression we knew that this core of who you are would flow down to our child – whether it be directly from you or from one of the wonderful coaches you supported. As strong believers in the importance of athletics to children’s development, we are so

very sad to see you leave! However, we wish you the very best in all that you do and encounter.

Thank you for all your contributions to the school.

With best wishes,ANNE, KEVIN & LUKE (AGE 4) WAEHNER

We hope your travels and future endeavors bring you much happiness.

part of them you take with you, leaving a part of yourself behind.”

Coach Porter,

If it was not for you, I would never have realized my love of working with children

nor my passion for sports. I will always rememberthose Friday afternoon drives to the “Y”

and stopping by Foster Freeze, beach volleyball games, and most of all, just the little moments throughout the day

that were the most meaningful.

To Coach Danny Porter,

It’s been our personal pleasure knowing “you” on this Turning Point path. You worked the winds of change for many terrific Tornados as any great storm chaser would.

We have had some of our favorite days at Turning Point, because of you; the Sato Volleyball Clinic, Dr. Billauer’s U.S. Soccer Talk, Eric Piatkowski’s Basketball Clinic, Billauer/Treivush Basketball Camp, Yosemite, Jog-a-thons, dancing the Ritz, your new gym,

Loy Vaught, Jeremy’s lacrosse clinic and attempting a golf team for Jeffrey. We always felt supported by you. You’ve made an especially huge mark on this community

and you will forever stand as “The Champion of Great Sports Character.” This campus will not be the same without you, yet your spirit will exist as one

of the most important and finest contributions to this school. Every alumnus fortunate and privileged enough to have experience your wisdom is forever richer.

WE LOVE YOU!

I wrote these verses for you when I finished 5th grade. You taught me how to be a good sport all the way back in Kindergarten!

SportsmanshipTo branch out and include others when you play basketball or football.

To make up a new game that all of your classmates can play.To be a trustworthy friend by letting what happened on the court stay on the court. To let all of the little mistakes slide away into the night, and wake up to a fresh start.

To pass the ball and try your best all the time.To be who you are and believe in yourself no matter what.

This is to be a good sport.
