to this edition of the prayer diary, which takes

us from Passion Sunday until (but not including) Trinity Sunday.

As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed

to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to

reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below).

Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses)

sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of

diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the

diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people.

Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests

that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers.

Shoreham deanery

We give thanks that all parishes are settled and stable with a full quota of clergy and for the common purpose in mission this gives to the deanery. Give thanks for new initiatives such as breakfast church started by some churches in order to develop fresh expressions of ministry to our village communities.

Pray for parishes as they develop relationships in clusters for mutual ministry and support. Pray for the deanery as we seek to work together in prayer during the Thy Kingdom Come global wave of prayer in May. Pray as we explore the possibilities of Anna chaplaincy and ministry to those experiencing dementia in our villages. Pray for the parishes coming up to their APCMs and for those who are seeking new churchwardens and PCC members, especially when human resources are limited. Pray for those who are undergoing or exploring building works to further mission in their parishes.

Strood deanery

There are no vacancies in Strood Deanery, and so we give thanks to God for a time of stability in leadership. Strood Deanery continues to see new developments being built - pray that the Church will find a voice in and for the community as people are affected by the growth and changes. Pray also for the pressures faced by local cuts and how the different churches are responding to fill some of the gaps being left. For the different opportunities across the whole deanery for people to find places of safety and belonging - that they will be opportunities for people to be blessed by God’s generous love and hospitality. For continuing wisdom and guidance for

the Strood Community Project and its Board of Trustees as it develops its strategy and works out its future direction. For the work of the Pioneer Minister across Strood, that initiatives developed will bear fruit.

Kondoa

Kondoa Diocese is one of our four partner Dioceses. The Diocese is evangelical and missional in a majority Islamic community (90%), although interfaith relationships are generally good. There is great poverty in the area and the last two years have brought extreme droughts, crop failure and hunger. Bishop Given Gaula asks that we pray for church growth and particularly the three large outreach events being planned for this year. Pray for all in the Diocese who are living and working in very challenging conditions, for the Bishop’s confirmation trips, starting in May, and for October’s Diocesan Synod.

A priority is providing all clergy, catechists and evangelists with a sound theological education. Training is provided by the Diocesan Bible College and some external courses. Please pray for God’s provision for the cost of running the College and for a new Principal from August (following retirement). Also, for the nine people being ordained in June, including the first three women to be ordained in Kondoa. Please pray for the Bishop Justus Education Centre, which is under construction. This school will provide teenagers with vocational training and improve their life chances. And finally, please pray for our Diocesan friendship to

grow from strength to strength and give thanks for the blessings that it brings us all.

Malling Abbey - a place of peace and renewal

The Nuns at Malling Abbey have been living through a time of continuity and change. Our Abbey Garth residential ministry caters for individuals coming on a silent retreat from two to seven nights. Pray that guests will find real refreshment here. Pray for women who are seeking to live alongside us within the community and/or are considering joining us. On our site also is:

St Benedict’s Centre, welcoming Day Guests (Groups or individuals) for away days, quiet days or meetings and day-long seminars and short courses. Pray that groups and individuals will continue to find renewal and strength.

St Augustine’s College of Theology offering ordination and reader training for four dioceses as well as theology for independent students. Pray that students will find a real source of learning in their faith journey.

Rochester Archdeaconry

Rochester archdeaconry has a number of vacancies to fill, for which we ask God’s guidance. In the next two weeks, a new cohort of churchwardens will be admitted to office. Please pray for them, especially those new to office or serving in parishes with clergy vacancies. Two project boards oversee mission plans for Chatham town centre and Ebbsfleet Garden City. Please pray for wisdom in the use of resources, the forging of institutional and community links and, most especially, that plans will lead to more people coming to know Christ and the communities being deepened and enriched. Please pray for the archdeaconry working group tasked with strategic oversight of

mission and ministry, that it may offer wise advice in support of the work of the parishes.

The Enthronement of the New Archbishop of Tanzania

Today we join our prayers with our brothers and sisters in the Anglican Church of Tanzania as they prepare to enthrone Rt Rev Maimbo Fabian William Mndolwa as the 7th Archbishop of that province. We give thanks for the ministry of Archbishop Jacob, and all that he has given to the province over the last five years. The aims and vision of the Anglican Church of Tanzania are to work for a sustainable Church seeking the growth of God’s Kingdom in Tanzania. They, and we, pray that individuals and communities will experience life in its fullness through their evangelism, worship, prayer, pastoral care, theological reflection and social services. We pray for their university and their centres of training and education in Msalato, Mtumba Kongwa and Dar Es Salaam.

We pray especially for Bishop Maimbo as he prepares to serve in this new capacity, praying for his own diocese Tanga as they begin to share their bishop with the wider province.
