Global Youth Service Day was

established in 1988 to celebrate

and mobilize young people to serve

their community. For this National

Day of Service, the PASS Ameri-

Corps took part in a community

clean up on April 22nd, also honor-

ing Earth Day. Thirty-eight Ameri-

Corps Members, the leadership

team, and a few dedicated PASS

students served and connected

with our different communities

through I Love a Clean San Diego’s

“Creek to Bay Cleanup”. We

cleaned creeks, parks, and streets

to prevent ocean pollution. PASS

AmeriCorps students also partici-

pated, with one Vista student not-

ing that we were cleaning the

neighborhood where his grandpar-

ents lived. The “Creek to

Bay Cleanup” is held twice

a year and the PASS Amer-

iCorps Program partici-

pates every spring.

Along with service to our youth

and communities, the PASS Ameri-

Corps Program is dedicated to

contributing to the professional

growth and development of our

Service Members. On April 17,

2017, PASS hosted a Resume

Workshop.

First, we had a presentation on

how to build an effective resume,

with time to update and construc-

tively critique each other’s re-

sumes. Then we learned tips on

translating this year of service with

PASS AmeriCorps onto our re-

sumes, and had a little time to

incorporate recommendations to

make our resumes as job-market

ready as possible.

We want to thank SDCOE Pro-

gram Specialist, Sal Garcia for pre-

senting on “Technology Trends,

Privacy Settings, and Protecting

Your Personal Brand”; SDCOE

Human Resources Project Special-

ist, Jessica Glover for presenting on

“Interview/Resume Strategies and

EdJoin”, and giving us some tips

from HR about how to make our-

selves competitive; PASS Ameri-

Corps Support Supervisors, Ya-

neen Gutierrez for presenting on

“Resume Building” and Teenie Le

for presenting on “Interview Tips”;

PASS AmeriCorps Service Mem-

bers, Corey Bishop for presenting

on “Social Media Networking:

LinkedIn” and Jonathan Spicer for

presenting on “Professional Eti-

quette in the Workplace.”

Spring is finally here! April has

been a short, but fun-filled

month. PASS students prac-

ticed showing empathy to-

wards others and had a great

time learning about the history

of Earth Day by finding out

how it is celebrated around

the world in places like Japan,

South Africa, Hungary, and

Madagascar. In celebration of

Earth Day, the PASS students

created sun prints of leaves

and flowers using light sensitive pa-

per. The 5th graders went to Camp

Cuyamaca Outdoor School and had

a great time working together,

making new friends, hiking,

making crafts, and other fun

nature activities. I'm so excited

that they raised their school

fundraising goal so that they

could experience learning in a

new environment. Laurel fami-

lies powered up their math

skills for our superhero

themed math night and had a

great night of food, games, and

prizes. PASS students are con-

tinuing to be hardworking

team players as they strive to

finish the year strong!

how we should keep them

clean. We spoke about the

three R’s of waste manage-

ment; reduce, reuse, and recy-

cle and a student related this

to one of our school rules,

“Respect all people and prop-

erty.” They then conversed

about a presentation they re-

membered about zero waste;

their demeanor changed and

now they were mobilized to

“Shouldn’t every day be Earth

Day?” During a discussion

about Earth Day, a student

pondered this question. It was

the most insightful sentiment

uttered all year. Our conversa-

tion about why we celebrate

Earth Day was rife with in-

quiry, reflection, and pledges

to treat the Earth better. Stu-

dents spoke of how often they

see trash in the streets and

clean their school.

Their excitement was also

evident at Literacy and Open

House Night. Students were

able to showcase their class-

work and many students rel-

ished in educating their par-

ents. On this night, many

teachers also dressed up as

book characters and taught

them another way to enjoy

literature.

of art, and since seven bottle

caps are needed to make each

flower, this will be an ongoing

project. Meanwhile, we are

looking forward to starting

May with a brand-new school

garden!

In addition to the garden com-

ing soon, it is incredibly excit-

ing that Nallely, one of Libby’s

4th grade PASS students, was

selected as Student of the

Month from her class. As it

relates to this month’s Key of

Excellence, “Balance”, her teach-

er wrote, “Nallely is working on

her goal of being mindful of her-

self and others while focusing on

what’s meaningful and important

in her life.” We can’t wait to see

what she achieves and I hope

that her selection will show oth-

er PASS students that they can

receive the same honor with

hard work and motivation.

In celebration of

Earth Day, stu-

dents painted

ers and serve as

decorations for

the forthcoming

school garden.

This is a won-

derful way to show students

how they can turn something

What's going on, Chavez?! The

warm weather and longer evenings

remind us that summer is just

around the corner. Now,

more than ever, is the time to

focus on school work and on

finishing the year strong. Simi-

larly, our Chavez PASS stu-

dents have been hard at work

turning in the last of their missing

assignments and any incomplete

work. We have also continued to

focus on our goals for the final weeks of school:

increasing grades, decreasing the number of

missed days, and finding strategies to stay on

task in class. With students' every visit to the

PASS Room, the countdown indicating how

many days are left to turn in missing work keeps

showing a smaller number! Students, please

check Aeries regularly, check in with your teach-

ers, and take advantage of every opportunity to

finish the year strong! The PASS Room (F-3) is

open every Tuesday and Friday before school,

during nutrition, and lunch as an extra resource

to you. Let's do this, Cougars!

ie, "Hardball", and the students

seemed to enjoy the movie! They

also designed their own cars in

science class. The kids demonstrat-

ed their creativity and many of our

PASS students made incredible

cars. BMW and Mercedes need to

watch out – our students are going

to be the next best car manufactur-

ers. As this school year nears the

end, we still hope to build long

April has been awesome and our

incredible students have shown

improvements both academically

and behaviorally. For our service

project this month, we had our

students plant a seed for Earth Day.

The students enjoyed this project!

In addition, we hosted a film

screening during several lunch peri-

ods. We watched the baseball mov-

our students have shown great im-

provements in both areas and we

hope to carry this positive momentum

through the final grades and behavior

report. April also held Earth Day, and

the students at Jefferson Middle School

were educated with a video and

wrote a paragraph describing what

they can do locally to help improve

the environment. It was very interest-

ing to see the great ideas our students

came up with and we are looking for-

ward to see some of them in action!

April has been a month of reflec-

tion. While students have been

working diligently to increase their

grades and make up missing assign-

ments, we have also focused on our

past actions and behaviors. In our

intro to PASS, (first day in the PASS

AmeriCorps Program), students

reviewed their grades/behaviors

and set goals for themselves. As the

last report cards went home, we

reviewed our progress and have set

final goals for the end of the semes-

ter. Happy to say, the majority of

Spring has arrived at Ocean Shores!

Students and staff are enjoying the

warm weather and sunshine. Dur-

ing April, we all enjoyed some

much needed time to relax before the home

stretch of the school year. With just over a

month left in the year, students are eagerly

anticipating summer, but still focusing on main-

taining or achieving good grades. We cele-

brated Earth Day by decorating the school

with posters of reminders to recycle and be

green. On Friday, April 21, 2017, I was able

to go to Vista Sports Park and see several of

my students play in a Continuation School

Soccer Tournament. Schools from all over

the area came to participate. The Ocean

Shores’ team did well, winning three out of

their four games. Students enjoyed playing

and being active! A special thank you goes

out to Mike Engen and Coach Jimmy for their

leadership throughout the season!
