CONTENTSEditorialHappy New Year Nepal Sambat 1130!!

It is not just amazing but also alarming that even after therecognition of Nepal era as a national era, some peopleare still trying to argue that it is a communal celebrationand that belongs to Newah community only. It is notbecause that they do not know the true essence of thisera but because there is still a substantial amount ofpeople with illusion to suppress Newahs. Most probably,Nepal Sambat is the only era in the world that carries thename of a country.

The glorious histories of Newahs are well known to theworld. They are not just skilled artists as most quackhistorians have explained about them. Yes, they aremusicians, architects, engineers, and scientists and moreimportantly they are the most brave people of Nepal. PrithviNarayan Shaha, the founder of Shaha dynasty fought withNewahs for 18 years to conquer the valley which is thelongest fight he had fought. He even faced war with Newahwomen warriors. History of Nepal is undoubtedlytransparent that his victory is a deceptive. Later, scaredPrithvi Narayan Shaha deviously spread propaganda thatNewahs are cowards to demoralise and not to give themjob in army. The number of Newahs took part in two worldwars is a matter of interest and it is needed to be studied.Martyrs Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Shukra Raj Shastri,Ganga Lal Shrestha, Tej Bahadur Amatya, Ganesh ManSingh, Pushpa Lal Shrestha have added importantchapters of bravery in the modern history of Nepal.

In the course of suppressing defeated people of the thenNepal, the Newahs, Prithvi Narayan Shaha burnt thehundreds of valuable books to erase the self-explanatorytestimonials of the valley. This was the first step ofsuppressing Nepal Bhasa, the language of Newahs whichis being continued until today by the Khas dominatedgovernment. It is noteworthy to remember here that Nepalhad achieved its recognition in United Nations onlybecause of Newahs' beautiful Ranjana script. It is justlast year that Nepal government made a discriminatorydecision that Nepal Bhasa can be studied as an optionalsubject in lieu of mathematics or science. What aderogatory decision? Newahs, wake up, do not just spendyour time celebrating Happy New Year and Mha Puja.Speak your language at home with children and whereverpossible. Your mother tongue can not be the barrier ofyour children's progress.

Dear respectable ladies and gentlemen, sisters andbrothers,Please accept my best wishes and hearty greetings onthe occasion of Happy Swanti (Deepawali) and HappyNew Year Nepal Era 1130.

Many of you are aware of the fact that Pasa Puchah Guthihas survived through an extremely critical phase duringthe period of last one year. With all your support and bestwishes towards PPGUK it has been able to safelyovercome the difficulties created by a handful of breakawayfactions who were trying to open a separate Newahorganisation. It also survived from a small group of peoplewho wanted to disregard the nine years old existenceand the history of PPGUK. Today, PPGUK has grownstronger with your full support and successfully extendedto the various parts of the country with its regionalchapters. On behalf of Guthi, I thank you all from thebottom of my heart for your rigorous support to savePPGUK.

The massive enthusiasm shown by participants in thelast Newah open forum has proved that we can join handsfor the sake of Newah and their causes mainly languageand culture. I hope you will equally support variousprogrammes and targets set according to this spirit.

I also hope that you will forgive if any mistakes were madein course of fulfilling the tasks. We always welcome andrequest for your constructive suggestions and help inpreserving and promoting Newah, Nepal Bhasha language,Newah culture in close coordination and mutual respectwith all ethnic groups not only in new Nepal but also allover the world.

Once again I congratulate you on the occasion of NepalEra 1130 and wish happiness, prosperity and sound healthto you all.

The Kartik Nach (Kartik Dance), dramatizedby Shree Siddhi Narsingh Malla, thelegendary king of the middle period of Malla

dynasty, since 369 years ago in Nepal Era (NE)761 (1697 Bikram Era (BE) or 1640 AD), is a verypopular traditional and cultural dance of Lalitpurplayed each year for the welfare of the state andthe people. The dance based on the Krishna Lila, the characteristic behavior of Lord Krishna, andsupplemented with Shree Barah and ShreeNarshing dances is played as a public show everyyear on the Kartik Dabali in Lalitpur DurbarSquare in the month of Kartik (October-November) for full 8 days in the evening. Hisbeloved son Shree Shreeniwas Malla in NE 787( BE 1723) extended the Kartik Nach for another7 days with addition of Bah Thah Nach, the danceof wise men. The beloved son of Shree ShreeniwasMalla, Shree Yognarendra Malla, added the“Madhavanara” and “Ushaharan” episodes andextended the Kartik Nach for full 30 days andestablished the tradition of the dance. This way,the Dance was named Kartik nach and playedduring the month of Kartik

The specialty of the dance is that it is not limitedon one topic but also various dances on differentcontext are played for the period of whole monthof Kartik. The main character of the dance is ShreeKrishna whereas the Narsingh incarnation danceis the main act. The Kartik Dance is the traditionallongest dramatic expression of Nepal. It would notbe an exaggeration if we say that it could be alongest traditional drama of the world. The danceis even today performed live on stage in the public. The dance is not only just a traditional Shastriyaone but rather it is a live document of the inclusivecharacteristics of the ancient, religious, historic,

tantrik proceedings and public dramatic forms.Another very specific characteristic of the danceis that from the very day of Shree SiddhinarsinghMalla, it has included various communities fromBrahmans to various ethnic groups and castes ofNewar Community and bounded together thevarious ethnic and religious groups into one threadand created the environment of peacefulcoexistence.

The Kartik dance has been performed in anuninterrupted manner upto Nepal Era 1069 (2006BE or 1949 AD) for a period of full month. Butbecause of the political unrest, since NE 1070 itcould not be performed for the whole month.Thereafter since NE 1071 to 1100 (BE 2008-2037)for 30 years, the dance was performed only fortwo days with the Barah and Narsingh avatardances. After the formation of “Kartik DanceManagement Committee in NE 1101 (BE 2038),the dance was performed uninterrupted upto datefor 8 days with the Barah and Narsingh avatardances supplemented with other dances selectedfrom the 30 days dance list in an alternatesequence. The dance is not only an asset of Lalitpurbut it is the traditional and cultural heritage ofwhole Nepal. It would be the responsibility of theGovernment and us, the Nepali People, to

Dharma Ratna (1930-2007) was a true scholarand a true Buddhist: he was dedicated to researchand clear exposition in the name of Buddhism. His understanding of it was particularly deep and,so far as I know, largely self-taught,. He alwaysstruck me as a very wise man, who used his timewell, never wasting a minute. I had the impressionthat he understood the society he came from quiteprofoundly. It was typical of him – typical of hisdeep thinking and subtle approach to his owntradition, an approach at once conservative andreformist – that he was a Pali scholar and playeda key role in the establishment of the Pariyatti Siksawhich is so instrumental in teaching Buddhismto young Nepalis today, and that he was closelyrelated to many Theravada monks and nuns, whom he supported as much as he could, and yethe was no Theravada fundamentalist,

simultaneously believing in and practising thetraditional Vajrayana Buddhism he had inheritedas a Sakya and a member of Kwa Baha, thefamous Hiranya-varna-mahavihar.

Sadly, I did not get to know him well. When Ilived in Kuti Baha-Nag Baha for nineteen months(from September 1982 to May 1984) he was stillliving in Trisuli, where he had a shop. Later heretired to Lalitpur (Yala), first to his old familyhome in Jhyatapol, where I visited him once, andlater to a new house over the river in the newsuburb of Naya Baneshwar. Had he retired earlier, while I was trying to grapple with understandingNewar Buddhism, I am sure I would have beendrawn to him and would have visited him manytimes, since Jhyatapol is no more than a few stepsfrom Kuti Baha. And I am sure he would havehelped me a great deal.

I met him casually on quite a few occasions, but,as I remember, I only carried out detailedinterviews with him twice, once in 1989 and oncein 2003. The interview in 1989 was held in his old

house in Jhyatapol. Technically that corner ofJhyatapol is known as Tajaphah and he told methat his ancestors had bought the house from someBrahmans 2-300 years ago. At that time I wasmainly interested in talking to him about rules ofdeference and how they differed as betweenNewars and Parbatiyas, and as between differentNewar groups. Characteristically, he answered myquestions thoughtfully, patiently, and fully, notchallenging my right to ask or ever questioningwhy I should want to know.

When the conversation moved on to life-cyclerituals, he told me that he wasn’t really in favourof the ihi or bel-vivaha mock marriage ritual forwhich the Newars are famous. He didn’t think itreally had much point: “But what to do? We haveto live in society (samajay cwane mah).” I said,“But by that argument you could get rid of firstrice-feeding and all the others as well.” Hedisagreed: annaprasana has a point, the markingof the end of the period of (birth) impurity, but ihidoes not.

Another interesting conversation I had with himoccurred quite by chance. One day, in January2000, I was sitting in the sun by the Bagmatibridge at Sankhamul, when he came by. He satwith me and told me of a great personal loss: his37-year-old son had died of a heart attack justthree months before, leaving behind two sons aged7 and just 9 months. After I had commiseratedwith him, as best I could, we spent some timediscussing the Theravada movement, and inparticular the thorny issue of bhiksuni ordination, which I was researching at that time, for the bookthat I later published with Sarah LeVine(Rebuilding Buddhism: The TheravadaMovement in Twentieth-Century Nepal, HarvardUniversity Press, 2005).

His opinion was that the anagarikas, the localTheravada nuns, were wrong to have taken thebhiksuni or full nun’s ordination from the ChineseFo Guang Shan sect. “They can stay as anagarikaand still be arhats,” he said. “They’ve taken theSarvastivada Vinaya [rules of monastic conduct],but kept the Theravada siddhanta (teachings).”

I tried to point out that the ordination traditionwas one thing, and the philosophical teachingsanother.

He said: “Look, they’ve just taken the bits theywanted. Chinese nuns don’t eat meat, but they

[the anagarikas] have all been in Burma andThailand and so they do [eat it]. Chinese nunswork, they don’t.”“What sort of work do the Chinese nuns do?” Iasked.

“They teach, work in hospitals, and do all kinds ofdevelopment work. If I were an anagarika I’d juststay as an anagarika. There are different words[for being a nun] in different countries. It’s onlyin Nepal and India that they are called anagarika. The Buddha said [when the earliest nuns came tohim], ‘Are you ready to bow down to the youngestmonk?’ They said that they were, and he said,‘Very well, but [because I have permitted womento be ordained] the teaching (sasan) will now lastonly for 500 years [instead of 5,000 years]’.”

I asked him: “But if you say that women cannotbe equal, how can that be the Buddha’s teaching?”He replied: “How can we say that it isn’t?”I said, “Western Buddhists will be angry if yousay this.”

He said, “Being angry is one thing, but it doesn’taffect the facts. You can’t be a Buddha, an Indra,or a Cakravartin as a woman. You can be aBuddha’s mother, or you can be reborn in theBrahma world where there are only men.... Iwouldn’t have done it [taken bhiksuni ordination].But look, all this is just my opinion. I’m just ahouseholder. I have to say namaskar to them, whether they are anagarika or bhiksuni, bhiksu, fakir, or whatever!”

With that, he smiled gravely, got up, andcontinued on his way to Lalitpur.

Three years later, in January 2003, I went to visithim in his new house. I remember being impressedthat he appeared to be completely at ease withword-processing whatever he was working on atthe time on a PC. His nephew, Bhiksu Maitri, wasstaying with him, having come from Lumbini theday before, and leaving while I was there for theairport. Dharma Ratna spent one and a half hourstelling me about the history of Theravada in Trisuliand the history of the Pariyatti Siksa. I said I wouldcome back, but that was the last time I spoke tohim.

Two young men with same name werealways confused when someone call"Dharma Ratna!!". One day these two

brilliant youths agreed to change their surnamescalling themselves "Yami" and "Trishuli". DharmaRatna Tuladhar chose "Yami" because he is fromYen (Kathmandu). The people of Yen(Kathmandu) are called Yami in Nepal Bhasa.Dharma Ratna Shakya chose "Trishuli" as he livedand worked in the area.

Born to father Bhavani Ratna and mother DeviMaya in 1913 AD, Dharma Ratna saw numerousturbulences within the family from propertyconfiscation to own father's suicide upon the deathof beloved wife. He and his poor father receivedthe message of Devi Maya's death in Tibet wherethey were earning for livelihood. He was onlyseventeen. Chandra Shumsher the then PrimeMinister had confiscated their wealth withconspiracy.

Poverty ridden but gifted Dharma Ratna had nochoice but to watch anxiously his contemporariesgoing to school from the hearth of the goldsmith

where he used to work as a fire blower He evensewed shoes to earn bread. He learnt alphabets, reading writing with his own effort. Fortunately,in Tibet he came to the contact of scholar BuddhistMonk Rahul Sankrityayan who taught him a lotabout Buddhism and other subjects.

He is a literati, a politician, a revolutionary, moreover, a social reformer and patriot. Heproduced several books on literature, politics andsocial reforms in Nepal Bhasa and Khas Bhasa. His involvement in politics led him to 18 years ofprison sentence in 1940. He met several NepalBhasa literati in prison including Chitta DharHridaya, Siddhi Charan Shrestha and Kedar ManByathit. He used prison as his school to learnliterature from learned literati and wrote "ArhatNanda" an epic, " Vishwontaryaa Machaa Daan","Nwakhaam Puchala" and "Buddha MaanisaHun". "Sandeya lisa", "Lithu", "Ang Lhamo" ,"Bhrikuti" and "Nepalko Kura" are also his books. One of his beautiful creations "Ang Lhamo" anovel, was confiscated by Panchayat regime whileanother novel "Bhrikuti" bagged Shrestha Sirapa, the first literature award of the country.

Guthi (Nepal Era 1130) Mha Puja Pasa Pucha Guthi U.K.

He is a staunch supporter of patriotic movement. He issued a statement against the then influentialleader B. P. Koirala's unpatriotic pro-Indianspeech without any fear which brought atemporary social unrest in the country. He backedking Tribhuvan and became the deputy forestminister in M P Koirala's cabinet.

His actions of social reform were too much forthe then conservative society of Kathmanduites. He regularly drank water from the hands of hisMuslim neighbour when they were consideredbelow than untouchables. His communityunsuccessfully tried to ditch him and labelled asan insane but he bravely continued to ignore themand kept not only chickens but also pigs. Tuladharswere not allowed to keep chickens and should havetaken bath in river if touched a pig. He was againstthe blind belief based rituals and never performedone at home.

His revolutionary actions could not attract thethen conservative society, but in 1945, Hira Devi,a daughter of wealthy Newar trader fell in loveand eloped with him against her parents' wish. She was yet another woman who just not daredto marry a pauper but supported husbandthroughout for his fight for democracy and socialreform. For this, parents and relatives abandoned

her. She never made any complaint to her husbandabout their economic severity but helped tirelesslywith smile even on the plates of nettles for dinner.According to Dr. Kayo Yami, Dharma Ratna'sdaughter, he used to collect refused meat frombutcher's shop to feed her pregnant wife.

He received financial assistance from kingTribhuvan to buy a house. Minister DharmaRatna appointed a man called Hakucha, a Pode(A man from sweeper class who is considered aslowest and untouchable) as his personal chef.Probably, this could be the first and last but thebest example ever shown by a political or socialleader in the history of Nepal for equality.

His intelligence upon reflects upon his all sixbrilliant children achieving success in theirrespective fields. Hisila yami is the youngestamong the daughters and most prominent onebecause of her political career. He died at the ageof 60.
