Objectives

Recognize and describe the different parts of the book.

Apply the knowledge of the different parts of the book in cataloging.

Demonstrate mastery in the parts of the book through written examination.

Why do we need to know?

In order to understand and appreciate the importance, significance, and usefulness of each of the physical parts of a book.

Each of the parts of the book has been added because it contributes to the usefulness of the book.

Physical Divisions

1. Binding

2. Preliminary Pages

3. Text

4. Auxiliary or reference material

Binding

Holds the leaves of the book together, protects them, and makes them easy to handle.

Spine – binding edge of the book and carries the title or a brief form of it, the author’s name, the publisher, and the call number if it is a library book.

Endpapers – pasted to the covers to make them stronger.

Preliminary Pages

Precede the body of the book.

Flyleaves – blank pages next to the end papers; they are the first and last leaves in the book.

Half-title Page – precedes the title page and serves as protection for it gives the brief title of the book and the series title.

Preliminary Pages

Frontispiece – illustration relating to the subject matter of the book; it precedes the title page.

Title Page – first important printed page in the book.

Imprint – place of publication, publisher, date of publication

Preliminary Pages

Back (Verso) – of the title page gives the date of the copyright and the names of the copyright owners.

Dedication page – bears the name/s to whom the author dedicates the book.

Preface – introduces the author and gives the reasons for writing the book.

Preliminary Pages

Table of contents – list of chapters of the book with page numbers; serves as an outline of the book.

Lists of illustrative material– include illustrations, maps or tables.

Introduction – describes the general subject matter and plan of the book.

Text

Made up of the numbered chapters and constitutes the main body of the book.

Auxiliary or Reference Material

Follows the text.

Appendix – contains material referred to, but not explained in the text

Bibliography – list of reference materials the author used.

Glossary – explains all technical or foreign words.

Auxiliary or Reference Material

Footnotes – may contain explanations of certain passages in the text.

Index – list of topics discussed in the text arranged alphabetically with page references.
