Why do we need to know?
In order to understand and appreciate the importance, significance, and usefulness of each of the physical parts of a book.
Each of the parts of the book has been added because it contributes to the usefulness of the book.

Binding
Holds the leaves of the book together, protects them, and makes them easy to handle.
Spine – binding edge of the book and carries the title or a brief form of it, the author’s name, the publisher, and the call number if it is a library book.
Endpapers – pasted to the covers to make them stronger.

Preliminary Pages
Precede the body of the book.
Flyleaves – blank pages next to the end papers; they are the first and last leaves in the book.
Half-title Page – precedes the title page and serves as protection for it gives the brief title of the book and the series title.
