Dear fly tier and fishermanThe contents of this catalogue were accuratewhen proof read. However as we are constantlyfine tuning the ranges offered, there may nowbe changes to the range when printed. Pleaseforgive us if there are any discrepancies at thetime when you are trying to find your hooks.

This catalogue was produced nine years afterPartridge became part of the Mustad group, and we keep adding new pages to its history.Ad Swier, a truly good friend of Partridge andmyself has supplied the cartoons for thiscatalogue. He is a great artist, pike fisherman, hook and fly designer, cartoonist and writer. He is also a true ambassador of 'smile'! Checkhis art on www.adswier.com/index2.html

As the name implies, Partridge of Redditchoriginates from Redditch in Central Englandwhere the manufacturing was based in MountPleasant. Both the town and the district havebeen renowned for its specialized metal work

throughout many generations, needle makingand hook making in particular. It is not easy toestablish when this started, but according toone likely theory it began with the existence ofa large monastery at Redditch. The monks were reputed to have been skilledartisans, and when Henry VIII dissolved thebrotherhood the monks were taken in byleading Catholic families in the area, whoobviously put their skills to use.

From there processing of steel and specialisedmetal work were developed and refined. In theearly days needle making and hook makingwent hand in hand. The techniques developedfor making needles could be applied to makinghooks as well. Steel wire was drawn inBirmingham and then sent out to needle andhook producers in adjacent towns such asStudley, Alcester, Arden and Redditch. In themiddle of the nineteenth century Redditchseemed to establish itself as the main hook-producing area. In the second half of thenineteenth century, the transition from handproduction to industrial manufacturing madeRedditch famous for excellent fish hooksthroughout the world. In this period theyactually dominated the world market.

The early history of Partridge is somewhatobscure. We know that the company wasstarted on the basis of existing hookmanufacturing shortly after the turn of thiscentury, but no one knows the exact year any longer. What we do know, however, is that it is the only British sport hookmanufacturer who survived from those early days until the beginning of 2000 when it was moved to its sister company: Mustad in Singapore.

Partridge of Redditch bears The name of it’sfounder, Albert Partridge. He bequeathed thefirm to his son Ted, who in turn sold thecompany to Alan Bramley in 1970, when none

of his children were interested in taking overthe company. Alan Bramley further developedthe company, and in the 1970s he extended theproduction to include exclusive split cane rodsas well as continuing to develop and improvehook production. Due to him Partridge ofRedditch has become an internationallyacclaimed fish hook brand. The latest phase ofthe history of Partridge of Redditch wasinitiated in 1996. Then the Norwegian hookmanufacturer O. Mustad & Son acquiredPartridge of Redditch from Alan Bramley. Asfar as Mustad is concerned, one might say thatthe circle had been closed. When O. Mustad &Son started their production of fish hooks inthe 1870s, they soon realised that the hooksthey were manufacturing were not goodenough for the market. The founder, HansMustad, then summoned specialists fromRedditch, England, to help him solve theproblems. They were specialists in tempering, design and fly-tying. Partly thanks to Redditchexpertise, Mustad is today the leading

manufacturer of fish hooks in the world. Aspart of the Mustad group, Partridge will stillcontinue to exist as a specialist brand and be anindependent alternative in the market placePartridge of Redditch continues its co-operationwith fly-fishers and sport fishermen all over theworld and keep its obligations to thecontinuously increasing number of fans who, throughout several generations, have beenenchanted by the magic of our FinestHandmade Fish Hooks.

DESIGN Designed in consultation with experiencedanglers.

QUALITY WIREMade out of very high carbon steel wire.

STRONG SHARP POINTS Strong needle ground points with a carefullyshaped geometry for the sharpest point. Forsome ranges we have used our own"Flashpoint" technique to perfect the points.

FORGED BENDSThe majority have forged bends for extrastrength.

NEAT EYESCarefully formed eyes, tightly closed.

SUPERB TEMPERAll hooks are heat treated to get maximum benefits out of the high carbon steel wire weuse.

INSPECTION Highest level of inspection ensures superbquality is maintained.

FINISHESBlack is a very popular finish for most specimen hooks, although some of our hooksare still in the traditional bronze colour. Blacknickel is becoming more and more popular formany types of fishing. Our Grey shadow hookshave a "Niflor" finish.

Black Nickel is a relatively new coating on fishhooks. The black is quite shiny, and hookscoated with Black Nickel are chemicallysharpened which gives an extremely sharppoint.

FLASHPOINTWe form the points of each hook with ournormal needle grinding method. The wirethen goes throughout all the other stages tomake it into a finished hook and it is thenheat-treated.

After that the hooks go through a process inwhich a chemical attacks the surface. Thethinner parts of the wire are affected and, inparticular, the point.

The chemical smoothes or "eats away" themetal and, in effect, refines the point. This isquite a critical operation because if thechemical sharpening goes on too long it willeventually dull the point and may weakenthe barb. Furthermore, if the chemicalattacks one side of the point more than theother then the point will be weakened. Finally, it is important to remember thatchemical sharpening will not make a weakerpoint into a strong one. It is more likely tomake a suspect point even weaker!

D3STFPARTRIDGE STRAIGHT EYE STREAMERHOOKSAbout 1982 this hook was made as a prototypecarp hook, but it was thought that it was toolong and not really strong enough.

It was at a time when ”lure” hooks were beingmore widely used in the UK and it wasrecognised that this hook would be an excellent“lure” hook for such fly patterns with its longshank, its low water salmon bend and itsstraight eye. It was accordingly adopted as a“lure” hook.

However, since “lure” is used to describe alltypes of mono-fly baits outside the UK thedescription “lure” was dropped and replaced by its present name.

For streamer and large attractor flies. In smallersizes also good for longer nymphs. Forged flatbend. Bronze finish.

The hook was made out of heavier wire andincorporates a wide gape.

This hook is now suitable for all types oftraditional streamer, bucktail and long attractorflies. The wide gape makes it good for flies likemuddler minnows and other larger bodied flies. Traditional down eye. Bronze finish.

YG3ASPROAT FORGED WET FLY HOOKSThis old style of wet fly hooks is very well established in the Partridge range.

14

16

The original name came from a Mr Sproat whowent to Hutchinson’s of Kendal (Hook-makers) about 1880 and persuaded them tomake a hook of this shape.

On April Fool’s day in 1980 the ManagingDirector of Partridge decided that the “DeSproat” hooks were developed by a SwissAdmiral of that name. The “De Sproat” hookswere specifically designed for fishing flies inglacial streams and they were fished upstream. The fishermen ran along the bank to keep theflies in their position.

TRADITIONAL WET FLYHOOKS

YAALBERT PARTRIDGE WIDE GAPEDOWN EYE HOOKSThis was probably the first range of hookswhich were specifically designed by AlbertPartridge as fly hooks. They were made withtwo varieties - down eye and up eye.

8

10

12

14

16

The up eye version was dropped as an offsethook was introduced in the “E” series in 1993with a finer wire.

The down eye version is still widely used forwet flies and dries.

It was field tested by Datus Proper in his book“What the Trout Said”, and came out on top ofhis list for strength. The Code A has a widegape and an offset bend. Surprisingly it is notforged, but is made from medium weight wirewhich accounts for its strength.

This range is normally used for wet flies andnymph imitations, but a number of expertsrecommended them as very strong and effectivedry fly hooks. The bend is offset. Bronze finish.

Page 19: Partridge 2008

17

DRY FLY HOOKSThe following shows you the various rangesof Partridge hooks that can be used for dryfly, trout and grayling patterns. Most ofthem are made out of fine wire, but one ortwo are medium weight hooks which can beused for heavily hackled dry flies, palmeredor deerhair styles. Many of the light-wire hooks are good for emergers and certainnymphs.

THE CAPTAIN HAMILTON “L” SERIESCaptain Hamilton was a Scot who emigrated to New Zealand in about 1860. He fished regularly over there having stocked hisnearby river with trout in about 1875. Thefish in the New Zealand river grew to averageover 2lb in weight. (He compares this with132 trout taken on a fly in his youth - totalweight just over 30lbs!).

In 1904 Captain Hamilton published a bookon “Trout Fishing and Sport in Maoriland”.Shortly afterwards he approached Hardy’sfor them to supply a new range of hooks forthe large trout in New Zealand.

The main features of the hooks were:- An almost round bend- Point with neat barb- A wider gape to take a larger “bite” and hold the fish better.

SPECIAL DRY FLY HOOKS

YAALBERT PARTRIDGE WIDE GAPEDOWN EYE HOOKS

This was probably the first range of hookswhich were specifically designed by AlbertPartridge as fly hooks. They were made withtwo varieties - down eye and up eye.

Surprisingly it is notforged but is made from medium weight wirewhich accounts for its strength.

This range is normally used for wet flies andnymph imitations, but a number of expertsrecommended them as very strong and effectivedry fly hooks. The bend is offset. Bronze finish.

MIDGE AND SMALL FLYHOOKS

K1AVINCE MARINARO MIDGE HOOKSIn about 1978 these hooks were very carefullydeveloped with Vince Marinaro as the almostperfect hook for small dry fly patterns.

They were offset because Vince felt that theyhooked better, and they had a down turned eyewhich he felt allowed him to move the fly onthe water in the right way.

He strongly recommended tying them on witha turle knot which he believed did not lengthenthe fly.

They have a Bronze finish and a wide gape.

Gary Lafontaine in his book “Caddis Flies”recommends them for a variety of Caddis(Sedge) dry fly imitations. Forged wide gapebend. Bronze finish.

K10YORKSHIRE FLY BODY HOOKSSpecial dry fly hook developed with PeterMacKenzie-Philips in the 1970s. Bronze finish.

Peter MacKenzie-Philips started his fly fishingbusiness on the success of the Yorkshire FlyBody hooks. They captured the imagination ofthe fly tyers throughout the world and gavePeter a boost in 1973.

Slowly they lost their initial impact and it wasnot until they were slightly redesigned in 1991that they became somewhat popular again. Theredesign incorporated a larger hook whichmade it easier to hook and hold a fish. The FlyBody hooks are best used for upwinged dry fliesor for hooked patterns.

The Yorkshire Fly Body hook will enable you totie better balanced dry flies, with a betterchance of hiding the hook.

Dressing flies on Fly Body hooks is a two stageoperation. Put the hook in the vice with theeye to the left. Start the thread on the point ofthe body, and tie in the tails and bodymaterials. Complete the body, working to theleft, until the top of the shank is reached, tie ahalf-hitch and then take the hook out of thevice. Put the hook into the vice with the eyepointing to the right, and complete the fly inthe normal way.

D4AFPARTRIDGE BUCKTAIL/STREAMERHOOKSAnother hook developed for streamer flies, butnow used widely for longer shank nymphs insmaller sizes. Down eye. Bronze finish.

This range of hooks arose from the forged longshank hooks which had been Partridge’s standard hook for all types of long shank flies. The hook was made out of heavier wire and incorporates a wide gape. It is now suitable forall types of traditional streamer and bucktailand long attractor flies. The wide gape makesit good for flies like muddler minnows and other larger bodied flies.

SALTWATER FLYSALTWATER FLY HOOKSWe know how many more fly fishers are nowfishing for many of the species of saltwaterfish that will succumb to a well tied and well presented fly. We also know that in someareas of the world fly fishers are verysuccessful catching fish which migrate fromfreshwater to salt or brackish waters. Withthis knowledge we, as specialist hookmakers, felt it was high time that we shouldproduce this catalogue which covers all typesof hooks for flies to be used in saltwater. Many of the hooks have Grey Shadow"Niflor" finish, which is very resistant tocorrosion.

SALAR FLIESTo put together a collection of Salmon fliesseems a fairly simple task. First one mustconsider the waters to be fished. Then thereis a massive amount of other parameters thatneed to be taken into consideration. Itwould be very easy to make a vast range offlies to cover every eventuality. This does notmake the choice of flies, when on the bank, easy. When looking at this new range, Ithink we have managed to produce a rangethat should cover most situations fairly well.Ending up with 9 patterns on doubles and 9on tubes also makes fly selection easier onthe bank These patterns cover most of theconditions, from flooding rivers to sunshineand crystal clear waters. Personally I feelcomfortable with the selected patterns.
