620,000 patients served through our Treat & Train Network of zonal, regional, and district hospitals in the Lake Zone of Tanzania
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
Touch Foundation entered its second decade in 2015, and we also strengthened our long-standing partnerships. We have been in Mwanza, Tanzania since 2004, and we are there to stay, working with our partners to bring better health to Tanzanians while looking for ways to spread our model of health systems strengthening for global adoption.
A cornerstone of our health systems strengthening work is our Treat & Train Network of healthcare facilities and educational institutions throughout the Lake Zone of Tanzania. A healthy network requires strong facilities and functional connections between facilities. The goals of a strengthened Treat & Train Network are to improve patient care, “treat”, and expand and enhance healthcare worker training, “train”. In 2015, we completed a number of major infrastructure projects, such as building a mortuary, an incinerator, and a dissection lab. We installed a Picture Archiving and Communication System to enable medical images to be stored digitally and shared between facilities positioning Bugando Medical Centre’s radiologists to provide more accurate diagnoses to a larger patient population.
We continued to apply our systems-level, problem solving approach to urgent health priorities including maternal health. As part of our Mobilising Maternal Health program, we launched an innovative emergency referral and transportation system for pregnant women utilizing community drivers and mobile money. We built C-section theatres and maternity waiting homes to support increased patient loads and held training sessions on emergency obstetric and newborn care.
We also extended our Global Development Alliance with USAID for 3 years. Our work with USAID is focused on transferring ownership of clinical rotations to our local partners and packaging the program into a scalable model for replication, in addition to improving deployment and retention of healthcare workers countrywide.
I am profoundly grateful for your generosity and partnership in bringing better health to Tanzanians. Your support enables us to do this important work.
With appreciation and warm regards,
Lowell L. Bryan
