Welcome to Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem’s (CFHU) annual report!
This document marks the beginning of a new tradition
for CFHU: the opportunity to take stock of the previous
year’s achievements. But it also serves as a platform to
articulate our vision for the future.
CFHU has a long and distinguished history as one of
Canada’s top-ranked fundraising organizations for Israeli
causes. Raising funds for and promoting the Hebrew
University will continue to be our top priority.
But CFHU in 2012 can no longer be considered an
arm’s-length association supporting a university in a
distant land. Today, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
is a full participant in an international scientific and
scholarly network in pursuit of research and knowledge
that benefits all of humanity. And CFHU is playing an
increasingly active and visible part in brokering, building,
and bolstering that network of intellectual and research
partnerships, at home and around the world.
The Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada
(IMRIC) is our best example of this sort of partnership
work. To date, we have raised $23 million of our
$50 million commitment in support of IMRIC’s
astonishing advances in medical research.
Equally if not more important, however, has been
CFHU’s role as a facilitator of an international network
of medical research partnerships between IMRIC scientists
and their counterparts across Canada. To date, we have
created 15 such collaborations, with Israeli and Canadian
scientists combining forces and mobilizing their strengths
to find innovative ways to combat breast cancer, diabetes,
spinal cord injury, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, prostate
cancer, HIV-AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, and more.
IMRIC is just the first of many such partnership
networks between the Hebrew University and Canadian
centres of expertise and innovative research. In the
coming years, we will continue to build on this highly
successful model as CFHU takes steps to realize its
mandate for the 21st century as a catalyst for building
research partnerships in areas as diverse as law,
technology, political and social science, agriculture,
communications, environmental sciences and more.
The opportunities are as varied and diverse as the
depth and breadth of research and brilliance at the
Hebrew University and at home.
Why this model, and why now? In brief: because
transnational collaboration is the means by which the
most innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing
problems will be achieved. Because it is efficient,
synergistic, and pluralistic. Because today’s technological
innovations not only make it possible but in fact demand
it. Because it is both global and local, benefiting not
only the citizens of both Israel and Canada, but citizens
of the world. Because it fosters stronger relationships
between Hebrew University and Canadian researchers,
and between the citizens of both countries.
As you’ll see on the following pages, it’s an exciting
time for Canadian Friends and for the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. We look forward to collaborating with you
well into the future.
“ IMRIC will serve as a catalyst for scientific partnerships between Canada and Israel, and Canadian Friends will have a major role to play in promoting those relationships and partnerships.”

IMRIC neurobiologist Dr. Aharon Lev-Tov (this page,
R) and Dr. Patrick Whalen, co-leader of the Spinal
Cord Nerve Regeneration Program at the University
of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute, will conduct
joint research into spinal cord injury.
Winnipeggers celebrated a groundbreaking
research collaboration between IMRIC’s
Dr. Abraham Fainsod (opposite page, L) and Dr.
Geoff Hicks, director of the University of Manitoba’s
Regenerative Medicine Program, on fetal alcohol
spectrum disorder (FASD). The Manitoba Research
and Innovation Fund will match up to $750,000
raised by CFHU for the newly established Canada-
Israel FASD Research Consortium between IMRIC
and the University of Manitoba.
The Hon. Jerry and Carole Grafstein Network for
Cancer Research at IMRIC was established in late
2010 to harness the talent of IMRIC researchers and
their Canadian counterparts. Under the leadership
of IMRIC’s Dr. Ittai Ben-Porath (opposite page, R),
the Network will bring together top researchers,
clinicians and pharmacologists in a creative
collaboration that promises to change the way
we think about cancer.
At McGill University, collaborative projects
have been established in epigenetic research at
IMRIC (see sidebar), as well as in human-rights
law, international business, food safety and
water management.
Late in 2011, a memorandum of understanding
was signed between Dalhousie University in Halifax
and the Hebrew University, committing to exploring
opportunities for collaboration.
JERUSALEM IMAX film collaborates with CFHU
Action! CFHU is excited to be part of the latest
project of Montreal-born filmmaker Jake Eberts:
a new, IMAX film whose subject is the historic
city of Jerusalem. The motion picture seeks to
enhance public opinion and knowledge about the
city and generate understanding between Jews,
Christians and Muslims. The not-for-profit project
will benefit different charities in Israel, including
IMRIC. A Hebrew University faculty member is on
the film’s advisory committee, consulting on history,
archaeology and theology. In November, CFHU’s
Montreal chapter held a gala dinner honouring
Eberts, whose films have been associated with more
than 60 Oscar nominations and awards.
Canada + Yissum = Results
Canadian Friends recently worked with Montrealer
and CFHU supporter Matthew Price-Gallagher, CEO
of Water Cluster Scientific, to create an agreement
with Yissum – the Hebrew University’s technology
transfer company – to develop his company’s water
technology. One of the world’s first technology
transfer companies, Yissum brings research to
life, forging partnerships between Hebrew U
technologies and investors around the world.
CFHU will continue to develop and broker business
partnerships between Canadian entrepreneurs
looking to invest in the Hebrew University through
Yissum. With the recent launch of the Yissum
Venture Fund LLC, the potential for international
investment in Israeli technology is growing.
And, they’re off! Virtual Marathon for Medical Research
On December 11, a virtual starter’s pistol launched
not only an online marathon, but also an exciting new
fundraising model for CFHU. In the Virtual Marathon
for Medical Research (VMMR), 10 avatars competed
to win support for research into a variety of medical
conditions. The VMMR increased IMRIC’s brand awareness
by establishing media partnerships across the country
through two major media outlets, whose contributions
valued approximately $1 million. The event substantially
increased IMRIC’s brand awareness through radio and
TV and an increase in social networking engagement on
Facebook and Twitter. Watch as CFHU continues to build
on innovative fundraising partnerships through interactive
virtual platforms. Many thanks to Gail Asper - The Asper
Foundation; key media sponsor Astral Media; and Shaw
Media. www.imric-virtualmarathon.com
“ There is a sense of a greater creative energy here. As an entrepreneur, that resonated with me.” Matthew Price-Gallagher, CEO, Water Cluster Scientific

(pictured) will work with University of
Manitoba counterpart Dr. Geoff Hicks
in the Canada-Israel FASD Research
Consortium.
Dr. Ittai Ben-Porath is heading The
Hon. Jerry and Carole Grafstein Network

2011 saw the creation of two exciting new partnerships
between Canadian scientists and their IMRIC counterparts,
as well as a range of collaborative models between the
Hebrew University, CFHU, and organizations, research
institutes, and universities across Canada.

– and Canadian! – Gairdner International
Award, presented annually to researchers for
outstanding contributions to medical science.
• Eight young Hebrew University researchers –
including three from IMRIC – were awarded
competitive starting research grants from the
European Research Council of the European
Union (ERC), totalling 12 million euros. With
29 such grants, Hebrew U ranks third among
European universities – and first in Israel –
for total ERC funding.
• Seeing with sound waves: Yissum, Hebrew
University’s technology transfer company,
launched a virtual cane for the visually
impaired. Developed by IMRIC researcher Amir
Amedi, this device will revolutionize the way
the visually impaired navigate the world.
Dr. Amedi demonstrated the new technology for
Israeli President Shimon Peres at a presidential
conference showcasing cutting-edge research
from the University.
• Fish on dry land: Prof. Jaap van Rijn (above, L) of
the the Hebrew University’s Robert H. Smith Faculty
of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has invented
a technology that makes it possible to raise fish in
the middle of the desert, using plastic pools.
• From waste to wealth: Hebrew U PhD
student Shaul Lapidot invented an eco-friendly
industrial foam made out of paper mill discards,
cutting down on both waste and fossil fuel
consumption. The technology was recently
licensed through Yissum.
• Beating diabetes: Two IMRIC research teams,
headed by Dr. Yuval Dor and Dr. Assaf Hellman,
respectively, have made important advances in
our understandings of diabetes: Dr. Dor’s team
has discovered triggers for regenerating insulin-
producing cells, while Dr. Hellman’s team has
discovered a genetic signature that predisposes
people to type II diabetes.
• Out of this world: On its final flight in May 2011,
the space shuttle Endeavor carried a Hebrew
University experiment in bone cells originated by
Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, who was aboard
the fatal Columbia shuttle crash in 2003. Hebrew
U scientist Dan Gazit replicated Ramon’s original
experiment for the Endeavor flight.
• ASD discovery: Hebrew University research
revealed that the recurrence risk of autism
spectrum disorder (ASD) among younger siblings
of children with ASD is 2-6 times greater than
previously reported.
a c H i e V e M e n t sh e b r e w u n i v e r s i t y
In 2011, the Hebrew University was richly recognized and rewarded, both
in Israel and abroad, for stellar academic achievements and contributions
to international scholarship.
Just one marker of the University’s 2011 accomplishments was its sharp
climb over the previous year – from 72nd to 57th place – on the global
ranking list published by China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The rise was
attributed in large part to the awarding of the 2010 Fields Medal to Prof. Elon
Lindenstrauss of the HU Einstein Institute of Mathematics. Prof. Lindenstrauss
is the first Israeli to be awarded this honour, widely regarded as math’s Nobel
Prize. The Hebrew University is the only Israeli institution to appear in the
top 100 on the Shanghai list, which is considered one of the most important
global university ranking systems. In a similar vein, the University’s law faculty
was ranked first in Israel and among the world’s top 100 law faculties as
formulated by the annual 2011 QS World University Rankings.

Mission of Friendship & Board of Governors meeting
It all comes together in Jerusalem! Each June,
Friends from across Canada gather for the Hebrew
University’s annual Board of Governors meeting
and Mission of Friendship.
Following the 74th Annual BOG in 2011, the
Hebrew University partnered with Israeli President
Shimon Peres to host a presidential conference on
The Hebrew University Lab: Research Today for a
Better Tomorrow.
At the prestigious annual Canadian Awards
evening, CFHU donors got to meet the Hebrew
U researchers and students whose work they
so generously support. In a moving event,
Calgarian Lenny Shapiro – who was awarded
an Honorary Fellowship – met approximately
30 of the dozens of scholarship students he has
supported over the years.
Mazel tov as well to Toronto’s Jeannie
Tanenbaum, inducted into the Hebrew University’s
Wall of Trustees; and to Montrealers Morrie &
Diane Cohen and Mitzie & Mel Dobrin, who were
made members of the University’s Wall of Life.
Live & Learn: Israel through the eyes of experts
CFHU’s annual Live,
Learn & Explore
trips to Jerusalem
and further abroad
have become the
Israel trip of choice
for both new and
seasoned travellers
to the country. With
the opportunity to study in Jerusalem and Europe
with Hebrew University experts as personalized
tour guides, it’s the perfect program for
Canadians who want to combine twin passions
for Israel and lifelong learning.
In 2011, Live & Learn participants journeyed to
Jerusalem and the South of France on a tour that
focused on “Archaeology, Politics & the Arts.” The
Jerusalem portion of the trip included meetings
with IMRIC researchers, a guided tour of the
newly renovated Israel Museum, visits to Tel Aviv
art galleries, and political updates. In Avignon,
Hebrew University scholar in residence Prof. Yom
Tov Assis, an expert in French Jewry, travelled
with the group to provide guided tours related to
Jewish history in the region.
b u i l d i n g f u t u r e l e a d e r s :
In 2011, 250 students from Canadian universities – an
almost 30% increase over the previous year – participated
in a variety of courses and special programs at Hebrew
U. Numbers are up partly as a result of an active student
recruitment campaign that included a very successful
first year of our Student Ambassador program: 12 recent,
enthusiastic, Rothberg International School (RIS) alumni
promoted the Hebrew University on their home campuses.
But our goal at CFHU isn’t simply student recruitment.
Our goal is to retain those students even after they have
left Jerusalem, to create a lifelong partnership between
them, our organization, the Hebrew University, and Israel.
Today’s students are tomorrow’s lay leaders, ambassadors,
and caretakers of the Hebrew University and its
international network of supporters. They are our future.
New programs and partnerships
CFHU continued in 2011 to expand our range of dynamic
programs and partnerships between Hebrew University
and Canadian universities:
• 16 students from the University of Waterloo
participated in a joint program in digital imaging,
funded in part by the RIS and CFHU.
• CFHU provided $60,000 USD to fund the hugely
successful Manitoba Mishpatim program, a three-
week international law and business course for
23 University of Manitoba law students at Hebrew
University. We are working to expand this program
across Canada.
• McGill University and the Minerva Center for Human
Rights at Hebrew U have teamed up on a joint course
in which 10 Canadian and 10 Israeli students meet in
each country in alternate years.
• 30 students from the University of Toronto
participated in the summer 2011 “Peace and Conflict
Studies” summer program, which was recently
opened to all Canadian universities.
• 15 students from York University’s Jewish Teacher
Education program spent two weeks at Hebrew U.
Scholarships
Scholarships – for Canadian and Israeli students –
are the backbone of CFHU’s work.
• In 2011, CFHU awarded $275,000 USD to Canadian
students attending the University, in addition to more
than $150,000 CND in matching funds with Ontario
universities.
• We instituted the $15,000 USD Bernard J. Persiko
merit scholarship for graduate studies at the Hebrew
University, with funds raised from CFHU’s annual
online March Madness Basketball tournament.

it’s what you get when the local
meets the global, and it’s a perfect way to describe the
accomplishments of Canadian Friends chapters in 2011. In
major centres across the country, supporters of the Hebrew
University – and of international intellectual collaboration
– gathered to celebrate the creation of new research
partnerships, learn from Hebrew University luminaries,
honour social and philanthropic leadership, and strengthen
the bonds between and among Canadian and Hebrew
University communities. Here are some highlights:
Toronto
The Ontario Science Centre was the backdrop for a dinner
honouring Morris Justein with the newly created IMRIC
award, given in acknowledgment of a major philanthropic
or scientific contribution to medical research. The dinner
was followed by a Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration in
conjunction with Israel’s consulate general.
Ottawa
November 1 in Canada’s capital city began and ended
with events to raise funds and awareness for prostate
cancer research in Canada and Israel. A partnership
between CFHU, Prostate Cancer Canada, and The Ottawa
Hospital Foundation organized a Wake-Up Call Breakfast,
followed in the evening by a Piano for Prostate Concert
featuring entertainer Jim Witter, who performed songs by
Billy Joel and Elton John for more than 400 guests.
Montreal
Legendary Montreal filmmaker Jake Eberts was honoured
with CFHU’s first Key of Knowledge Award at a November
dinner that also celebrated and raised funds for a
a c r o s s c a n a d a : CFHU Chapter accoMpl isHMents
partnership between Canadian Friends and Eberts’s
newest project: the 3-D, IMAX film JERUSALEM.
Honourary event chair Kevin Costner sent video
greetings, and renowned Quebecois filmmaker Denys
Arcand presented Eberts with the award.
Winnipeg
A thousand guests turned out at a gala event on May 16
to honour stalwart community supporter Joe Bova with the
Hebrew University’s Scopus Award for his lifelong dedication
to cultural philanthropy and his concern and respect for
the Jewish people. The evening celebrated a landmark
partnership between IMRIC and University of Manitoba
researchers on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD): the
Manitoba government will match up to $750,000 raised by
CFHU for the Canada-Israel FASD Research Consortium.
Western Region
Calgary
“Man in Motion” Rick Hansen was the keynote speaker
at the Calgary chapter’s inaugural fundraising event on
April 27. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed a Moroccan-themed
feast in honour of philanthropist Harley Hotchkiss
in recognition of his leadership in establishing the
University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute, which
has entered into a partnership with IMRIC researchers to
collaborate on spinal cord injury research. Mr. Hotchkiss
was presented with the IMRIC award; the event’s success
was marred only by his untimely death in late June.
Edmonton
Hebrew University geography and public policy professor
Shlomo Hassan delivered a lecture on September 20 at
CFHU’s newest chapter. How, he asked, can a Jewish
and democratic state be sustained within secure and
defensible borders?
Vancouver
“Back to school” took on a different meaning when
Hebrew U professors came to Vancouver in September.
The perennially successful “Best of Hebrew U” program
brought together HU experts in comparative religion,
Jewish history, geopolitics, and communications – as well
as IMRIC chairman Prof. David Lichtstein – for a weekend
devoted to lifelong learning.
