CHAPTER ONE More than a quarter of the world’s population live in cities with more than one million inhabitants. The United Nations projects that by 2050, 68% of the world’s population (approximately 4 billion people) will live in cities, and yet urban infrastructure is far from catching up. Traffic in the world’s cities is getting worse; vehicle speeds in many city centers are now averaging as little as 15 kilometers an hour; and car ownership costs are rising while cars sit parked inactive 95% of the time. In 2018, car drivers spent a total of 154 hours or six days in traffic jams during rush hour in Berlin1.

In the recent “Mobility of the Future” report, commissioned by Allianz

Partners, renowned futurologist Ray Hammond predicts that changes in car ownership and consumer behavior is one key trend which will continue to revolutionize the mobility landscape. By 2040, most city dwellers in developed countries will no longer own a private car but will become subscribers to mobility instead. For short journeys, city dwellers are increasingly favoring shared electric bicycles and scooters and the adoption of micromobility continues to be an increasingly popular way to address these mobility challenges.

Today, micromobility is a category of urban transportation that addresses short-distance passenger trips under

10 kilometers with lightweight-vehicles such as owned or shared electric scooters, electric mopeds and bicycles. Trips of less than 8 kilometers account for as much as 50 to 60 percent of today’s total passenger miles traveled in China, the European Union, and the United States2.

More than 200 cities worldwide and 90 in Europe have already adopted electric scooters.

In France, the micromobility market exploded in 2018 with an increase in sales of electric scooters of more than 129%, supported by an exponential growth in use3.

Thus, 11% of Parisians use scooters often. Since launching in Paris in June 2018, Lime has powered 1% of all travel in Paris, and it took bicycles 25 years to achieve the same share! Lime riders in Paris report that they save 11 minutes on average per trip.

Beyond the flexibility of travel and time saved, electric scooters are a sustainable transportation solution. Lime estimates that by replacing car trips with Lime rides, their users have saved more than 32 million kilometers of car travel since launching. This means savings of over 11,000 metric tons of

carbon emissions or more than 3,830,000 liters of gas.

However, the importance of safety within the industry remains the foremost consideration, and must be considered with great importance and enhanced as micromibility continues to grow.

With the increasing popularity of e-scooters, a rising number of riders can mean an increase in the number of incidents and consequently of injuries sustained. A continued investment in infrastructure and protected bike lanes coupled with innovative rider and non-rider safety programs is critical to providing a safer environment for all.

In 2019, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) conducted a study which highlighted that new riders account for two-thirds of injuries. The study also found that most injuries could have been prevented if riders had worn helmets.

For this reason, Lime introduced First Ride, an in-person education covering local rules and basic riding tips, to familiarize first-time riders with proper and safe scooter use.

CHAPTER FOURLime: a commitment to responsible and safe micromobility

Lime was founded in 2017 with a mission to connect people and places for a healthier, cleaner and more equitable city. Since then, Lime has become the global leader in micromobility and expanded to 110+ cities in 30+ countries on 5 continents and has surpassed over 130 million trips globally, with 20 million rides in Paris alone since 2018. Safety for all is at the heart of Lime’s efforts and the global micromobility leader is constantly pushing the boundaries of safety innovation. This includes Lime’s Gen 3 scooter which was built with safety at the forefront of the design with specialized brakes, improved suspension, and larger wheels. Lime also works closely with cities to ensure the right shared mobility program is built for each community. This includes sharing data to help governments improve urban planning, enhance biking and pedestrian infrastructure and tackle congestion.

Lime also proactively engages riders and communities to showcase the benefits of micromobility and inform users on how to ride safely and courteously, park responsibly, and respect the rules of the road. Lime has implemented numerous safety measures that include:

First Ride Education:

Cultivating Safe Rider Habits:

Rider education must start from the most important ride users will take - their first. Many riders are new or infrequent users of scooters and two-wheeled vehicles and Lime is addressing this with First Ride events around the globe. To date, Lime has organized over 200 First Rides in over 60 cities with more than 4,000 participants.

Education cannot stop after the first ride and Lime aims to build safe habits for every subsequent ride. Lime’s innovation in technology continues to push riders towards safer riding behavior. Over the past year, Lime has introduced Drunk Riding Prevention, Sidewalk Detection and Just In Time notifications. Lime also invests in ongoing global public awareness campaigns and recently launched a website dedicated to safety, in addition to sending regular in-app reminders for health and safety best practice. Lime has invested €3 million in the “Respect the Ride” campaign where 250,000 free helmets were given away and 140,000 riders to-date have pledged to follow safe riding practices that ensure safer streets for everyone. Lime also facilitated the industry’s first Education and Safety summit last year in both San Francisco and Berlin.

The urban revolution underway is no small effort, requiring the leadership of governments, public transit agencies, non-profits, and the private sector. Lime is leading this movement with e-scooters quickly becoming a critical piece of city infrastructure and vital to the global recovery.
