Let me encourage you to do something that will revolutionize

your devotional life. Instead of just reading your Bible and praying each

day, begin to think of your time each day with God as personal worship

time. We are admonished in the “Lord’s Prayer,” which is literally a

prayer outline that Christ gave to the disciples to pray, “Our Father

which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name” (Matthew 6:9). What the

Lord is saying here is that part of our prayer time each day should

include worship and praising (lifting up) His holy name. In fact, it is first

in order of priority on the list.

You and I have only a few names. My name is Thomas Edgar

Ward. When I was born my parents took one look at me and said to

themselves that three names will describe anything that “that” will ever

be. However, GOD IS AWESOME!! There are hundreds of names in the

Bible for our God. All of them are there to give us not only a richer

appreciation of who He is, but a means by which we can praise Him.

This is a devotional booklet. Read and study one of the names

each day. Look up the related Scriptures that are given. Then take time to

meditate on the wonder of that glorious name. Then each day use the

booklet to go through each name you have learned. Use it as a guide to

praising His name each day as you begin your prayer time. There is a

spiritual strength that is drawn from personal worship of His name that

will fill your life with new joy and energy as you praise the magnificent

name of the Holy One.

INTRODUCTION

“Blessed be the name of the LORD from this timeforth and for evermore. From the rising of the sun

unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name isto be praised.” Psalm 113:2-3

One of the most dynamic ways that God reveals Himself to us isthrough His name. If we are to praise His name as we are commanded inHis Word, we must know what those names are and what they mean. This booklet is meant to be a worship guide to a better understanding ofour wonderful God. It is my desire that you will know Him in a moreintimate way and that you will learn to worship and praise His name.Notice the following Scriptures that press upon us the spiritual benefitsof a fuller understanding of His precious name:

• We are to give glory to His name (Psalm 29:2).

• We are to encourage others to exalt His name (Psalm 34:1-3).

• We are to praise His name at all times (Psalm 113:2-3;

Psalm 63:4; Psalm 145:1).

• His name brings joy (Psalm 33:21).

• His name is our defense (Psalm 20:6; II Chronicles 20:22).

• His name defeats our enemies (Psalm 44:5-8).

• His name is our strong tower (Proverbs 18:10).

• His name is our help (Psalm 124:8).

• When we are happy about our salvation, we will praise His

name (Isaiah 12:3-4).

• His name is above every name (Philippians 2:9-10).

• Even Jesus came to exalt the Father’s name

(John 17:6, 11-12, 26).

• We are to put His name upon our children (Numbers 6:22-27).

ELOHIM(pronounced el-o-heem )

GodRead Genesis 1:1-4

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness

was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Godmoved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

The very first name the Lord uses to describe Himself is the name ELOHIM. Being the first name of God makes it vitally important that weunderstand the truth found in this magnificent name. This name is used over30 times in Genesis chapter one alone and 2,570 times in the Old Testament.Every time the English word God is mentioned in the Bible (KJV), it refers toELOHIM—our Creator.

ELOHIM is a plural noun which begins to reveal to us in the first verse ofthe Bible that God is a trinity. The root of ELOHIM is “El,” which means theMighty, Strength, or the Strong One (Deuteronomy 10:17). It also means “theOne that keepeth covenant.” In Solomon’s Temple prayer he says, “…there isno God [ELOHIM] like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, whokeepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee…”(I Kings 8:23). Because ELOHIM is the Strong and Mighty One, He has thepower to make covenants and to keep them forever.

The glorious truth is that Jesus Christ Himself is ELOHIM, for the Bibletells us that “…by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and thatare in earth, visible and invisible…” (Colossians 1:16). ELOHIM created usby His power and then put Himself in a covenant (promise) relationship withman through the blood of His covenant (Hebrews 10:29).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Oh, Lord, I lift up your name, ELOHIM. You are the One that

has created me by your great power. You are the great God of theuniverse and yet you chose to give me a Bible full of blessed

promises to live by. Thank you, ELOHIM, for writing down yourcovenant in the Holy Scriptures. Thank you for loving me so muchthat you gave to me the precious covenant of the cross. I worship

you and adore you, my ELOHIM.

JEHOVAH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw )

LORDRead Isaiah 12

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said,Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sentme unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shaltthou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your

fathers,…hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, andthis is my memorial unto all generations.” Exodus 3:14-15Of all the names that describe the character of God, JEHOVAH is most

descriptive. JEHOVAH is the most frequently used name of God in Scripture. It occurs 6,823 times. JEHOVAH describes for us a God that is absolutely self-existent. It literally means “One who is what He is.” JEHOVAH possesses essential life and permanent existence. That is why He could say toMoses to tell them that “…I AM THAT I AM…” has sent you (Exodus3:14). JEHOVAH is that name which reveals to us that God is holy above allelse. The seraphim in Isaiah 6:3 cried, “…Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD [JEHOVAH] of hosts….” His very essence is holiness. JEHOVAH loves righteousness in His people and blesses them accordingly (Deuteronomy 11:13-14). By contrast, JEHOVAH hates sin and will judge iniquity (Exodus 20:4-6).

JEHOVAH is that name of God that is concerned with revealing new truth. It is not “thus saith God” (Elohim). It is, “thus saith the LORD” (JEHOVAH).Hundreds of times JEHOVAH reveals new truth to His servants (Jeremiah 1:4,7, 9, 11). JEHOVAH is the God of special revelation (Exodus 6:2-3).

JEHOVAH is above all else holy and because of His eternal holiness, He isgrieved by the sins of His people (Psalm 95:10).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Holy, holy, holy art thou Lord, God, JEHOVAH. I join with all of creation to praise and worship your name, JEHOVAH. Forgive me,

JEHOVAH, if I have grieved you and make my heart clean that I maywalk with you and receive the blessing of your presence. Thank you

for revealing the truth of salvation to me. I glorify your name, JEHOVAH, and pray that JEHOVAH-God might give to me a greater

understanding of your wonderful Word.

EL-SHADDAI(pronounced ale shad-dah -ee)

God AlmightyRead Genesis 17:1-5

“And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude

of people;” Genesis 28:3Although the patriarchs did not know God by His name Jehovah (Exodus

6:2-3), they were very familiar with the name EL-SHADDAI—God Almighty.EL-SHADDAI is the “All Sufficient Mighty One.” The name EL-SHADDAI isthe name by which God revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as“the One that maketh fruitful” (Genesis 28:3; 35:11; 48:3-4). EL-SHADDAIis the One who overrules the laws of nature and does the miraculous. Thisdesignation for God is used 250 times in Scripture. The name “Shaddai” istrans lated 48 times in the Bible as “Almighty” and 24 times as “breast.”Therefore, EL-SHADDAI is the strength giver and satisfier of His people. There is not a single need that Almighty God cannot supply, even if it is contrary to the laws of nature, as was the case when God gave a son toAbraham and Sarah.

Abraham and Sarah had to learn that what God promises, He will supply, without any need for fleshly help. They tried to help the Lord by having achild with Hagar, but EL-SHADDAI made Sarah’s womb fruitful. We mustbe careful not to run ahead of EL-SHADDAI when things seem impossible. EL-SHADDAI desires to make us fruitful (John 15:16).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:EL-SHADDAI, I am weak and you are strong. You are

Almighty and I desperately need your strength. Give me strengthI pray to live my life for you. I cannot do it without your help.Help me to see when I am operating in the flesh. Make my life

fruitful, EL-SHADDAI, in my witness to others and in my Biblestudy. Let me know more of you and experience more of yourgrace and power. I worship you EL-SHADDAI and I confess

my dependence on thee.

ADONAI(pronounced ad-o-noy )

LordRead Genesis 15:1-6

“After these things the word of the LORD cameunto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: Iam thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And

Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me,seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is

this Eliezer of Damascus?” Genesis 15:1-2Our relationship to God is made clear by the name ADONAI—Master,

Lord. As ADONAI we are His slaves. We are not hired servants, but pur-chased slaves. The hired servant was always considered a stranger. He wasunable to eat the passover and had no right to his master’s protection or affection. A purchased slave, however, was a memberof the family. He could enjoy the passover and had the joy of his master’saffection and protection (Exodus 12:43-45).

The Master-slave relationship means that God demands obedience fromHis creation (Malachi 1:6). Moses understood the Master-slave relationship(Exodus 4:10). David understood this relationship to ADONAI and mentionsit four times in three short verses (II Samuel 7:18-20). Even in the NewTestament, this relationship clearly exists. The name Lord (Kurios) is usedhundreds of times in the New Testament. God makes it very plain that we areunder the protection and benevolence of purchased slaves (Romans 12:1-2;I Corin thians 6:19-20). The Lord Himself gave us the great example of servanthood when He humbled Himself and washed the disciples’ feet (John13:13-16). He is our ADONAI, our Master and Lord.

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Oh, God, you are my ADONAI. I am your slave, purchased by

your blood. I pray that I may be a faithful, obedient servant.Being your slave is the greatest of blessings. Being your slave has

freed me from the bondage of Satan and sin. Help me to livetoday in constant awareness of my position as a purchased slave

of the blessed Lord of lords.

JEHOVAH-JIREH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw yir-eh )

the LORD will ProvideRead Genesis 22:1-14

“And Abraham said, My son, God will providehimself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they wentboth of them together. And Abraham called thename of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said tothis day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be

seen.” Genesis 22:8, 14Abraham reveals to us one of the many compound names of Jehovah.

When facing the greatest trial of his life, Abraham meets JEHOVAH-JIREHwhich means “the Lord will forsee and provide” (Genesis 22:8, 14). The Lordprovided a ram in the thicket to take Isaac’s place. JEHOVAH-JIREH hasdone the same thing for us when He provided His Son, the Lamb of God, totake our place on the cross. JEHOVAH-JIREH is that name of God in theOld Testament that uniquely points to God’s provision on the cross. And ifGod would give us His own Son, will not JEHOVAH-JIREH “…freely give usall things” (Romans 8:32)?

Everything we have ever received has come to us by JEHOVAH-JIREH,who provides for our every need (Philippians 4:19). It is JEHOVAH-JIREHwho has the foreknowledge to see into the future and make provision aheadof time for the trials and testings we must face. It is JEHOVAH-JIREH whosaw the need to provide a way for man’s sin to be forgiven. Everything wehave ever possessed came from JEHOVAH-JIREH. Just as He provided forHis servant Abraham, He will provide for you.

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:JEHOVAH-JIREH, you have been so good to me. You have

given me life and family and purpose for living. Oh, howgrateful I am for your love and forgiveness that were given tome at Calvary. Nothing that I have, have I received of myself. You have given it all. You are my all in all. Please help me towalk worthy of your provision that I might have the blessing

of your presence.

JEHOVAH-ROPHE(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw raw-faw)

the LORD that HealsRead Exodus 15:22-26

“And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voiceof the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is rightin his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments,

and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon theEgyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

Exodus 15:26In the compound names of Jehovah, God is progressively revealing Himself

to His children as the One able to meet all their needs. JEHOVAH-ROPHEmeans “the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26). What a wonderful truththat God would heal, restore, and repair us spiritually and physically—Hecares. Mankind desperately needs a healer for their sins (Isaiah 1:4-6). Just asGod provided a tree which healed the polluted waters of Marah, so God hasprovided a tree on which the Savior died to heal us of our sin.

Jesus is revealed to us in the New Testament as the great healer. JesusChrist is JEHOVAH-ROPHE. His main work was spiritual healing (Luke19:10). But He also came with miraculous physical healings that caused won-der and amazement to all who beheld Him. He healed all who came to Him(Matthew 8:16-17). He healed the cripple, the blind, the dumb and even thedead. It is right for God’s people to call upon JEHOVAH-ROPHE for healingspiritually and physically. Although God’s Word makes it clear it is not Hiswill to heal all the time (II Corinthians 12:7-9), it is His will to heal most ofthe time (James 5:13-16).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:I stand amazed, oh God, that you love me so much. You have

saved my soul and healed my infirmities time and again. JEHOVAH-ROPHE, thank you for the water of life you havegiven to me. I need your healing every day that I might be in aright relationship with you. Lord, when I am down physically,

help me to believe that you care and want to heal me.

JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw m kaw-dash )

the LORD who SanctifiesRead Leviticus 20:1-8

“Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for Iam the LORD your God. And ye shall keep mystatutes, and do them: I am the LORD which

sanctify you.” Leviticus 20:7-8JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH means “the Lord who sanctifies” (Leviticus

20:8). Perhaps this name is the one that most accurately describes the

character of Jehovah. He is holy above all else and apart from all wickedness.

He is Himself sanctified above the whole universe (Isaiah 44:6). It is because

He is sanctified that He demands that other things and persons be sanctified or

set apart to holiness. JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH sanctifies times and seasons

(Genesis 2:3; Leviticus 25:10). He sanctifies places and things (Joshua 6:19;

Leviticus 27:14). He also sanctifies people (Leviticus 20:26; Jeremiah 1:5).

The desire of JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH is to restore believers ruined by sin

to a position of holiness (Ephesians 4:24). He wants us to become like the

God we serve (I Peter 1:15-16). He even demands that we separate ourselves

from the unsaved (II Corinthians 6:16-17). It is the wonderful hope of the

church to be eternally united with the Lord in glory as His holy bride,

without spot (Ephesians 5:26-27). We are sanctified by redemption and we

are being sanctified by JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH through His Word (John

17:17-19). God so wants to produce sanctification in us that He chastens us

to achieve holiness (Hebrews 12:10-14).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Thank you JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH for setting me apart fromthe world unto yourself. Please make me holy like you are holy. Iam so glad that I am in the world but not of the world. I dedicatemy life to you today. Use me for your service and your glory. Keep

me from those things that would make me less holy.

JEHOVAH-NISSI(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw nis-see )

the LORD our BannerRead Exodus 17:8-16

“And it came to pass, when Moses held up hishand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let downhis hand, Amalek prevailed. And Moses built analtar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:”

Exodus 17:11, 15Israel faces their very first battle since the Exodus. Amalek has come

to do battle with God’s people. Moses stands on the top of a hill over-

looking the battle as General Joshua leads the troops below. In Moses’

hand is the rod of God. When Moses holds up the rod, Israel wins. When

his strength fails and the rod comes down, they lose. So Aaron and Hur

seat Moses on a rock and help him to keep his hands in the air with the

rod of God held high. That rod was the banner of God. Moses names the

place JEHOVAH-NISSI, which means “the Lord our Banner of victory.”

God was teaching Israel that He is their Banner of victory. He is the One

that will make them victorious over their enemies.

We cannot lose as long as we understand that the battle is God’s and

He guarantees the victory (Deuteronomy 20:1-4). We are engaged in a

great spiritual battle (Galatians 5:17; Ephesians 6:12). Our assurance of

final victory is JEHOVAH-NISSI. We must fight under His banner and in

His strength. We cannot hope to defeat the world, the flesh and the Devil

without the victorious power of JEHOVAH-NISSI (II Chronicles 20:15).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:JEHOVAH-NISSI, thank you for placing me on the

winning side. You are my victory and I am honored tomarch under your banner. I praise you for all the battles I

have won in my life and I thank you even now for the victory that will be mine yet future. Glory to your name.

JEHOVAH-ROHI(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw raw-hee)

The LORD my ShepherdRead Psalm 23

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Hemaketh me to lie down in green pastures: he

leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth mysoul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness

for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3The tenderness of God is shown in His name JEHOVAH-ROHI—“the

Lord my Shepherd.” It reveals to us the most intimate relationship betweenthe Lord and His people. Jehovah is the loving Shepherd of His flock. Theprimary meaning of “Rohi” is “to feed” or “to lead to pasture.” We are Hissheep and He guides us lovingly to green pastures where we can feed underHis divine protection.

Jesus is the JEHOVAH-ROHI of this age of grace (John 10:1-18). He is the“great shepherd” who bought the sheep with his blood (Hebrews 13:20).Everything that a shepherd could possibly be to his sheep, Jesus is to us. Thisis made very plain in Psalm 23. Here it clearly tells us that JEHOVAH-ROHI,our wonderful Shepherd, provides our every need so that we want for nothing.

Psalm 23 says that I shall not want rest or refreshment (verse 2). I shallnot want forgiveness or guidance (verse 3). I shall not want companionship orcomfort (verse 4). I shall not want sustenance or joy (verse 5). I shall notwant anything in this life or the life to come (verse 6). What a Shepherd!

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Great Shepherd, I am amazed when I think of your tender care. Ipraise you for watching over me day and night. I thank you forleading me to the best possible pastures where my spiritual lifecan grow and prosper. I praise you for the guidance I receive inyour Word that provides me with principles for living. I worshipyou JEHOVAH-ROHI and I need your guidance for I often have

no idea which way to turn.

JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw tsed-ken-oo)

the LORD our RighteousnessRead Jeremiah 23:1-6

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raiseunto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and

prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely:and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD

OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jeremiah 23:5-6Jeremiah speaks this prophecy when Judah was about to be taken into

captivity. Violence, revolution and idolatry filled the land. In the midst of corruption and coming destruction (II Chronicles 36:15-16), Jeremiah looksinto the future to JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU—“THE LORD OUR RIGHT-EOUSNESS.” Jehovah is perfectly righteous (Psalm 129:4; Isaiah 45:21). Thevery foundation of the throne of God is righteousness (Psalm 97:2).

Man’s greatest need is righteousness, for without it we shall never seeGod. No man has ever been righteous (Romans 3:10-12, 23). In fact, Godmakes it very clear that what man calls righteous is filthiness in the sight ofGod (Isaiah 64:6). Man had to have a perfect sacrifice if he was to be pardoned for his unrighteousness. Thank God, JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU cameas Jesus Christ to be the “Righteous One” and die in our place (Hebrews 1:8-9). Jesus was made the very righteousness of God for our sakes (I Corinthians1:30; II Corinthians 5:21). What we could not do for ourselves, Jesus Christdid for us when He died upon the cross (Romans 5:19; 10:4). We have beenwashed in His blood and received the righteousness of JEHOVAH-TSID-KENU. Therefore, we can come directly to God in prayer by Hisrighteousness. What a blessing!

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Oh, Lord, thank you for the blood that cleansed my wicked heartand made me righteous. Your love for me sent Jesus to die in myplace. My heart is full of gladness for I have your righteousness

which is perfect. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU, I worship you. Thank youfor giving me your righteousness.

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw shawm-a)

the LORD is ThereRead Ezekiel 48:30-35

“It was round about eighteen thousand measures:and the name of the city from that day shall be,

The LORD is there.” Ezekiel 48:35The same prophet Ezekiel who foretold the destruction of Jerusalem,

prophecies of its restoration. As he gives the details of that holy city, he

points out its most significant characteristic and that is the presence of

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH—“The LORD is there.” The most precious promise

that believers have had in all ages is the presence of the Holy One. The eter-

nal presence of God is conveyed in the name JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH. His

eternal presence was promised to Moses (Exodus 3:13-14). JEHOVAH-

SHAMMAH was present with Israel in the cloud by day, in the pillar of fire

by night, and at the crossing of the Red Sea. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH was

present at the dedication of the Temple (II Chronicles 7:1-3).

The truth is, the only thing that makes us different from the world is that

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH is present in our lives. The sweet Holy Spirit is the

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH of this hour. He was given to us when the presence

of Jesus Christ Himself left this earth (John 14:16-17). The Holy Spirit will be

with us until we see JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH face to face in the person of

Jesus Christ.

Ezekiel’s prophecy looked to the new Jerusalem where JEHOVAH-

SHAMMAH will be, and His very presence will be the light of the city

(Revelation 21:23-25).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH, thank you for your presence. You’re

always there when I need you. Without your presence, lifewould not be worth living. Your presence brings joy and hope tomy life. Help me to live so that I do not grieve your Holy Spirit.

JEHOVAH-SHALOM(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw shaw-lome )

the LORD is PeaceRead Judges 6:1-24

“And the LORD said unto him, Peace be untothee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then Gideon

built an altar there unto the LORD, and called itJehovah-shalom…” Judges 6:23-24

Israel had been under severe oppression by the Midianites for seven years. The Midianites had stolen all of the tools, food and livestock from the Israelites. There was no peace. There was only bondage, servitude and fear. In the midstof all of this, God calls Gideon to lead Israel to victory over their enemies. Godreplaced the fear in the heart of Gideon with His perfect peace. Gideon buildsan altar to God and calls it JEHOVAH-SHALOM—“Jehovah is peace.”“Shalom” has in its meaning the idea of reconciled relationships based on thecompletion of a transaction or the payment of a debt. JEHOVAH-SHALOMpaid our sin debt on the cross of Christ and purchased for us perfect peacefor all who believe (Philippians 4:7).

JEHOVAH-SHALOM desires to give us peace (Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 29:11).God’s very presence gives peace to us as it did to Gideon. When we dwell in Hispresence with our hearts and minds fully trusting Him we will have “perfectpeace” (Isaiah 26:3). Jehovah-Jesus is JEHOVAH-SHALOM for us today. He isthe supplier of peace (John 14:27; 16:33). Peace was provided for us in His owndeath (Romans 5:1, 10). As we are sanctified unto God, we experience more ofHis blessed peace (Philippians 4:6-9). The total satisfaction that all the worldis groping for can only be found in Him—JEHOVAH-SHALOM.

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:JEHOVAH-SHALOM, I praise you for the peace you have givenme through the cross. Forgive me for those times when my heartand mind are not fixed upon you and I lack your peace. Whenfear comes and peace is wanting, help me to come quickly to

JEHOVAH-SHALOM, who satisfies me and gives me purpose.

JEHOVAH-SABAOTH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw sab-ah-owth )

the LORD of HostsRead Psalm 89:1-8

“For who in the heaven can be compared unto theLORD? who among the sons of the mighty can belikened unto the LORD? O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thyfaithfulness round about thee?” Psalm 89:6, 8

This name of God does not appear in the Pentateuch. It is not revealed toIsrael until they are in the promised land. The “Lord of Hosts” depictsYahweh as the mightiest of all warriors, who commands all the hosts (armies,God’s creation) of heaven and earth. JEHOVAH-SABAOTH is the creator ofall the hosts of the universe (Genesis 2:1; Psalm 33:6). Though the term hasmilitary overtones, it exceeds that to signify His headship over all creation(Colossians 1:16-17).

As the “Lord of Hosts,” Jehovah stands ready to help at all times (Psalm84:11-12). He is in command of all of heaven’s armies— animate and inanimate. They are at His disposal to do whatever He bids them do. Hispower and Lordship never fails and the hosts await His direction (Isaiah40:26). The prophet Isaiah points out that the Lord of Hosts will be avengedupon His enemies (Isaiah 1:24) and that JEHOVAH-SABAOTH will bringdown the prideful (Isaiah 2:12).

The term appears twice in the New Testament and indicates that the “Lordof Sabaoth” hears the cries of His people when they are afflicted and it is Hewho spares His people from destruction (James 5:4; Romans 9:29).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:JEHOVAH-SABAOTH, you are the mightiest warrior. In fact, youare the Creator of all warriors. I am one of your host. I am readytoday to obey your commands. I praise you for being there when I

need you. I cannot win over the enemy unless you fight for me.You have never lost a battle and I praise you for being my God.

EL-ELYON(pronounced ale el-yone )

the Most HighRead Daniel 4:17-34

“Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth breadand wine: and he was the priest of the most highGod. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be

Abram of the most high God, possessor of heavenand earth: And blessed be the most high God,

which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.” Genesis 14:18-20

EL-ELYON means “Most High” and is a proper name in Daniel 4:17, 32,34. This name speaks of the awesome majesty and supreme exaltedness ofGod. He is higher than the highest. In fact, He is the “Highest” (Luke 1:32,35). It is the Most High who rules in the kingdom of men and His rulership isabsolute as King Nebuchadnezzar found out (Daniel 4:34). He is “…most highover all the earth” (Psalm 83:18). His kingdom is universal and none can attainunto it or overthrow it. His omnipotence guarantees the immutability of Hisauthority (Psalm 18:13-14). The name occurs as “Jehovah-Elyon,” a compoundname of Jehovah in Psalm 7:17; 47:2; 97:9.

He is the Most High God who is to be worshiped forever. No one can belike Him in His majesty and He will allow no one to try to imitate His glory,as the King of Babylon discovered (Isaiah 14:12-15). The Most High is to beextolled and glorified. God’s people are to wonder and be amazed at Him.EL-ELYON is to be magnified simply because He is the Most High. Thosewho reject the counsel of the Most High sit in moral darkness and death untilthey turn to Him (Psalm 107:10-13).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:I am awed by your majesty, my Most High God. You are and ever

shall be the Highest of the Highest. You and you alone are the rulerof the universe. I accept your ownership of my life and I am glad thatyou possess me. You are totally supreme. Please give me the grace to

allow you to be the absolute monarch of my life.

ALPHA & OMEGA(pronounced al -fah and o -meg-ah)

the First and the LastRead Revelation 1:1-11

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and theending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was,

and which is to come, the Almighty.”Revelation 1:8

ALPHA and OMEGA are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This name encompasses all the other names of God. This is the first and lastword on all that comprises God. “In the beginning God…” the Bible says(Genesis 1:1). There is no explanation of where God came from becauseGod came from nowhere. He is called the “beginning and the ending”because He is the eternal cause of all things and He is the final destinationat which all things arrive. This name speaks of the awesome power of His“exnihlo” creative ability (John 1:1-3). “Alpha” quickly ascribes to God theidea that He supercedes and sustains all creation (Colossians 1:15-17).“Alpha,” the first, also speaks of His right to be preeminent, chief, and theprincipal of all Heaven and Earth (Colossians 1:18-19).

“Omega,” the last, quickly conjures up imaginations of finality, completion and conclusion. It is appropriate that He is called the ALPHAand OMEGA in the first chapter (Revelation 1:8, 11) and the last chapter(Revelation 22:13) of the last book of the Bible. He is all there is.Everything in existence was created finally for Him. And every man willexalt Him and declare His Lordship in the end (Philippians 2:9-11).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Lord, you are the beginning and the ending. My life beganbecause of you and my life will end when you command it.

You are the first and last of all things and for that I am grateful. I glorify your name ALPHA and OMEGA. You

totally encompass all that I will ever need in Heaven and inearth. You were there before the dawn of time and will be

there at the awakening of eternity and beyond—you’re God.

JEHOVAH-NAKAH(pronounced jeh-ho-vaw naw-kaw)

the LORD Who SmitesRead Ezekiel 7:1-9

“And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I havepity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways

and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee;and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth.”

Ezekiel 7:9The severity and judgment of God upon sin is revealed to us in the name

JEHOVAH-NAKAH. God says to Israel in Ezekiel chapter seven that “Now isthe end come…I will send mine anger upon thee…” (Ezekiel 7:3). JEHOVAH-NAKAH goes on to say, “mine eye shall not spare thee” and “I will judge theeaccording to thy ways” (Ezekiel 7:4, 8). God never smites (punishes ordestroys) until His mercy and long suffering have been exhausted. God smotethe earth by flood, but only after the whole world had become corrupt beforeHim (Genesis 6:12-13). God decided to smite Egypt because of Pharaoh’s stubborn heart which would not let the people go (Exodus 3:20). The greatplagues that were brought upon Egypt are a reminder to us all that God willnot always tolerate our sinful ways (Exodus 7:17; 12:12). Jehoram, king ofIsrael, learned of the judgment when he “wrought that which was evil.” Godsaid, “Behold, with a great plague will the LORD smite…” (II Chronicles 21:6,14). JEHOVAH-NAKAH is to be feared not by His children who walk in truthand love Him, but by a world who rejects His ways and delights in wickednessbecause He will one day come again to “smite the nations” (Revelation 19:15).

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:My God, I know that you are holy and cannot tolerate sin

forever. One day you will come in wrath and judgment uponthe enemies of Christ. JEHOVAH-NAKAH, help me never to

exhaust your patience with me. When I walk in error, Godquickly convict me of my errant way and lead me back to

paths of righteousness. I love you, JEHOVAH-NAKAH, andstand in awe of your power.

QANNA(pronounced kan-naw )

JealousRead Exodus 34:1-14

“For thou shalt worship no other god: for theLORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:”

Exodus 34:14God demands, expects, deserves, and is worthy of the worship of all

mankind. Therefore, when God’s Word says His, “…name is Jealous…,”

there are no evil overtones as is the case with most human jealousy. The Lord

is the absolute monarch of all creation, who desires that all our worshipful

affections be directed toward Him and Him alone. God will not tolerate

man’s worship of another god, which is perhaps the highest offense against a

loving Creator and Savior of all men. So strictly did God demand the worship

of Israel that He warned them of swift and certain judgment if they made a

likeness of any god and bowed down to it (Deuteronomy 4:23-24; 5:9; 6:14-

15; Joshua 24:19-20). The name Jealous is focused on God’s right to receive

worship and the fact that His jealousy can become a righteous consuming fire

upon those who turn to other gods.

We are warned in the New Testament not to provoke God to jealousy

(I Corinthians 10:22). God is jealous of our personal worship. He is lovingly

envious that we spend time with Him in full recognition of His glory and

majesty.

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Oh God, I celebrate your name Jealous. I am not fearful of that

name but rather amazed to know that you are jealous of me. I

love you Lord and praise you, for you are God and there is none

else. Help me in this world that demands so much of my time and

energy never to forget my need to worship you.

QADOWSH-IYSH(pronounced kaw-doshe eesh)

Holy OneRead Isaiah 1:1-4, 6:1-4

“To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I beequal? saith the Holy One.” Isaiah 40:25

Perhaps none of the descriptive names of God so quickly describes to our

finite minds the very essence of who God is. HE IS THE HOLY ONE, the

most perfect being in existence (Exodus 15:11) to whom there is no equal. He

is the Holy One “high and lofty” who dwells in “the high and holy place”

(Isaiah 57:15). As the Holy One, He is absolutely separate from evil and

cannot tolerate sin (Habakkuk 1:13). Isaiah uses this proper name more than

any other prophet and seems to be especially burdened about the sinfulness of

his generation as compared to the holiness of the Holy One (Isaiah 6:5). In

Isaiah’s most well known vision, we see the seraphim (angelic beings created

specifically to declare God’s holiness) proclaiming to each other with

thundering voices, “…Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts…” (Isaiah 6:1-4).

Holiness is God’s primary attribute. Therefore, if we would dwell with Him,

He demands that we be holy (I Peter 1:15-16). God has always required

holiness from His people (Exodus 22:31). All the holiness that man can possess

is found in Jesus Christ who is called the “Holy One of God” in Luke 4:34.

TEACH ME TO WORSHIP:Holy, holy, holy are you my God and my King. You are the

Holy One. You and you alone deserve all my worship. You arewithout an equal. So high, and so great, and so perfect art thou.I love you Holy One and I thank you for sending Jesus Christ

your Holy Son to the cross that His holiness might be impartedto a sinner like me, that I might some day dwell with you andbehold you in your majestic holiness. Help me to be holy, for

my sins are many and my way is perverse. Let me dwell in yourpresence, my Holy One (Isaiah 57:15).
