– Letter of Appreciation –To the Awesome, Sweet, Caring Staff on the 4th Floor,
I just wanted to express my gratitude and commend you all on thewonderful care that I received during my recent stay. I am the old, wild manwith the infection in his knee that was on IV antibiotics for five days recently.I was very touched by the kindness and compassion that you all exhibitedtowards me. EVERYONE seemed to go out of their way to make sure that allof my needs were attended to and everyone was so nice and really seemed tocare a lot!! That mean a lot to me since I have been dealing with some not-so-pleasant things in life lately. You never know what the smallest of thingsthat you may do or say really means to someone. The meals were awesome, too – just too small of portions. LOL.Just want to encourage you to keep up the good work and always rememberwhat a wonderful service you provide! Thank you for all of your hard work, kindness, and professional care!
God bless you all,William Sharp

ROBERT E. “BOB” HOLROYDS E P T E M B E R 1 5 , 1 9 3 1 – O C T O B E R 2 7 , 2 0 1 9
ROBERT E. “BOB” HOLROYD, ofPrinceton, joined his beloved wife,Emilie Adams Holroyd (d. 2009), inthe Hereafter on Sunday, October27, 2019.
He proudly served his cherishedcountry in the United StatesMarine Corps and his treasuredMountain State in a variety of roles, both public and private. He leavesbehind a grieving family andcommunity.
“I never worked a day in my life,”he’d say before explaining that hislove of the law as expressed bythe U.S. Constitution made his 61-year legal career a joy rather thana chore.
He advocated for a better worldfor regular people and wasparticularly concerned with legal, medical and educational sectors.Until his stroke, Bob kept a fullwork-week calendar, with half-days on the weekend. His regularschedule included Fridaybreakfast in the PrincetonCommunity Hospital (PCH)cafeteria. He was very involvedwith the hospital as a founder andboard member, then as generalcounsel until his passing.
Bob followed his mirror-twinbrother, Fredrick Fairfax “Fred”Holroyd II of Charleston, (m. SarahGott Holroyd), into the world atPrinceton Memorial Hospital onSeptember 15, 1931. They werethe second and third sons ofVirginia Lazenby Holroyd,
deceased, a daughter ofBluefield, grocer Robert EdwardLazenby, also deceased. Theirolder brother, Frank Jackson“Jack” Holroyd Jr., and youngersister, Diane Holroyd Nichols, predeceased Bob.
His father, the late Frank JacksonHolroyd, MD, was the son ofAthens, W.Va., native FredrickFairfax “Uncle Doc” Holroyd andHattie Shoemate Holroyd, bothdeceased. Uncle Doc boughtponies for his grandsons andlater they accompanied himhorseback as he providedmedical care to patients acrosssouthern West Virginia andwestern Virginia. Sometimes, theyjust rode for fun.
As a student in Mercer StreetGrade School in Princeton, Bobwould sweet-talk his teachers intoletting him and a few friends takefield trips to watch cases at theMercer County Courthouse, a fewblocks from the school.
“If a particular case got gruesomeor racy,” he recounted, “the judgewould wave us out and tell us,‘now you boys go on back toschool.’ It got hot in that courtroomwith all those people in it, so thewindows were usually open. We’dgo sit under them and listen to thegood parts.”
Later, at Princeton High School,Bob served as captain of thedebate team. He was known to tellboastful Ivy League graduates “I
graduated from Princeton” and letthem find out which Princeton ontheir own. After high school, hemajored in political science atWest Virginia University. In 1952,he volunteered for the UnitedStates Marine Corps to serveduring the Korean Conflict.Bob had earned his sergeant’sstripes by the time he met Emilie atSt. Mary’s College in Raleigh, N.C.He’d gone to the school to visit hisBluefield cousin, not knowingshe’d been confined to campus.
Emilie, one of the cousin’s schoolchums, agreed to go out with himinstead. After a courtship, part ofwhich Bob spent on duty in Cuba, they wed, lived briefly in marriedhousing at Camp Lejeune, N.C.,and had their first child in 1954.
Robert E. “Bob” Holroyd

USMC granted him reservist statusthe same year. He returned toMorgantown, with his young familyand began earning his JurisDoctorate degree. After finishing,he worked as a National LaborRelations Board intern inWashington D.C. before returning toPrinceton and joining establishedattorney W. Broughton Johnston, deceased, to form the Johnston,Holroyd & Associates law firm.
In 1966, Bob built a house onCourthouse Road, where thecouple raised their three livingchildren: Elizabeth “B” Holroyd ofChapel Hill, NC (m. Forrest M.Covington, Jr.); Magistrate WilliamFrank “Bill” Holroyd of Princeton, and Mary Jacqueline “Mary-Jacq”Holroyd, Esq., of Athens (m.Samuel Hay Gardner). The couplenever fully recovered from the lossof their infant son, Robert EdwardHolroyd Jr., in 1958, They did notpublicize their tragedy, preferring todirect their energies toward theliving and to avoid uncomfortablediscussions when they would rathertalk about the needs of theircommunity and state.
To say that Bob was family orientedis like saying the Bluestone is a littlewet. He gloried in his grand-children, Emilie Elizabeth “Bess”Dolin of Thailand (m. GeneBunyaraksh), Emma Hay Gardnerof Charleston (m. Mickey Z King-Fowler), Robert Allen”Bob” Gardnerof Morgantown (m. Erin ColleenGardner), and Elizabeth Burney “B”Gardner of Fairmont, (m. CalebDavis). Bess brought her daughter,Meeta (b. 2013), for long annualvisits with her great-granddaddy, so
Bob got to spoil her for six years.
He is also survived by 12 niecesand nephews and a number ofgrand- and great-grand nieces andnephews.
Bob liked working with his handsand learning new skills. Over theyears, he added stone and brickmasonry to his woodworkingcapabilities, ultimately expandingthe house with a garage on one endand a master bedroom on the otherend, “to balance it out.”
The late Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) tapped Bob in 1960 to serveas the southern West Virginiacampaign chairman for presidentialcandidate John F. Kennedy, whooverwhelmingly won the state, andboth Bob and Emilie saw a waythey could make a difference intheir corner of the world:Democratic politics, as they felt itstood up for ordinary people.Their political adventures first putBob into the Mercer CountyAssistant Prosecutor office from1961-1964, the same year he wonelection to the WV House ofDelegates, where he successfullysupported the repeal of the deathpenalty. He said it was not the placeof a fallible system to take lives.
He also served as Mercer CountyProsecutor from 1965-1967, wherehe saw a need for law enforcementpersonnel to better understandcivic rights and the law. He wrotethe first state handbook on searchand seizure to distribute to policeofficers. He was a consultant to theGovernor’s Committee on CrimeAnti-Delinquency, Correction, and amember of the International
Association of Chiefs of Police. Hewas also an instructor on CriminalLaw and Procedure at West VirginiaState Police Academy and taughtWest Virginia Basic Police ScienceCourses at Institute. He was a guestinstructor at Bluefield State Collegeand an adjunct professor atMarshall University.
He served two terms on the WestVirginia State Democratic ExecutiveCommittee and became a delegateto the Democratic NationalConvention in 1976, helpingnominate Jimmy Carter forPresident.
His love of the law and respect forthe U.S. Constitution can’t bequestioned. Any time someonecomplained about some rule or law,he’d quickly suggest they make aneffort to change it through politicaland legislative action.
He had much to be proud of, butwould list his work with the WVSchool Building Authority and theMercer County 911 Committeeamong his most recent goodcauses. He was a member andofficer in Princetons JuniorChamber of Commerce and anactive member in the PrincetonRotary Club, and is a currentmember of the Veterans of ForeignWars-VFW, American Legion, Elks,Moose, Mercer County and WestVirginia’s State Bar Associations.
Accolades and accomplishmentsare appropriate and expected inan obituary, but the reality of BobHolroyd stretched immeasurablyfar beyond the columns of inkherein; it reaches still, and alwayswill, far beyond.
