Overarching Goals of STEAM2Framework

• To develop the “design sensibility” of students through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Design, Mathematics, and the Medical fields

• To develop students as creative thinkers, innovative designers, creative problem solvers in the context of a robust implementation of the new core standards

4. Science and Engineering are Integrated in the NGSS, K-12

“A significant difference in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is the integration of engineering and technology into the structure of science education. This integration is achieved by raising engineering design to the same level as scientific inquiry in classroom instruction when teaching science disciplines at all levels and by giving core ideas of engineering and technology the same status as those in other major science disciplines.”Appendix A – Conceptual Shifts in the Next Generation Science Standards, p. 4

District-Managed Internship Model • Student applies to the district to be considered for the

internship experience • District interviews and selects students for internship

program • Students/parent(s) attend informational meeting, and

sign Student Internship Agreement Form, Parent Consent Form, and Confidentiality Agreement with business

• Student (or parent) provide own transportation • Students complete orientation and all rotations • Upon successful completion of internship experience

(rotations and Reflective Journal), students receive elective high school credit for experience

• Employer interviews and selects students for internship program

• Students can apply for elective high school credit for successful completion of internship experience through the district’s Credit Flex process

Establishing a Partnership for Internships

• Agree upon type of internship (district-managed or employer-managed); this defines the focus and scope of partnership agreement and program objectives

• Develop and approve partnership agreement

• Agree upon internship program objectives and learning experiences of each rotation

• Develop timeline and schedule

• Market program, recruit and select students

• Implement the internship program
