The community pharmacy as a health hubCommunity pharmacies are uniquely positioned to function as health hubs—entry points for patients who need advice, advocacy, assessments, and triaging. This is more important than ever in rural communities, where the local community pharmacist might be the only health care provider. Join us to hear 2021 Pharmacist of the Year, Stephanie Burden, share the unique health hub pharmacy practice she has built in Rocky Harbour, NL, where patients and health professionals depend her on for education, advice and health system navigation. (Date TBD June 2021)

How pharmacy can support harm reduction though opioid safe supply initiativesRecord numbers of deaths due to opioid use and misuse through 2020 and early 2021 are a clear signal that that the opioid crisis in Canada has only intensified, despite increased awareness and attention over the past several years. The concept of opioid safe supply is one of the most interesting efforts that has been made recently to improve interventions that support patients with opioid misuse disorder. Join us as we speak with expert pharmacists who will outline the rationale and the patient outcomes that they have experienced after incorporating safer supply into their opioid agonist therapy practices.(Date TBD June 2021)

Pharmacists as public health stewardsFor many Canadians, pharmacists are the most accessible health-care professionals, and pharmacies are the most easily accessible site to access care. As a result, pharmacies are a logical choice for Canadians to access products and services that will improve their health and prevent disease. This webinar will focus on how pharmacies can support public health in their communities and be recognized as a core component of public health stewardship.(Date TBD summer/fall 2021)

The case for congruence: Harmonizing pharmacists’ scope of practice in opioid managementThe opioid crisis has increased its intensity in Canada, likely exacerbated by the pandemic. In 2020 exemptions to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) provided pharmacists with unprecedented authorities to exercise expanded scope to meet the needs of patients. Despite this, of harmonization across Canada prevents all pharmacists from making full use of these exemptions. This webinar will make the case for pharmacists across the country to have the same scope of practice with respect to controlled substances and will outline ideas on how harmonization could be moved forward.(Date TBD summer/fall 2021)

Leadership in pharmacyTransformational leadership is an important attribute in our society, yet a definitive theory on leadership has remained elusive. Nevertheless, the need for organizations to assign leaders from within their ranks to establish processes, structure, goals and a vision are considered vital for success. This webinar will focus on leadership within pharmacy, in terms of both how important leaders are within pharmacies as well as at a corporate and provincial/national level. It will include thoughts on which leadership attributes are most important during periods of crisis, such as the current pandemic, as well as which type of leadership styles contribute most to organizational excellence. The webinar will draw on real-world examples and provide tips on how leaders can be more effective in their roles. (Date TBD summer/fall 2021)

Pharmacists assessing, triaging and responding to the mental health casualties of COVID-19Numerous media reports have highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canadians’ mental health, with consequences for all age groups. With the frequency of interactions between Canadians and their pharmacists, there is an important role for pharmacists to discuss mental health issues with their patients and, where necessary, refer patients to their primary care provider for follow-up. This webinar will focus on communication skills and tools that pharmacists can use to address mental health issues and concerns with their patients.(Date TBD summer/fall 2021)

Supporting the mental health and wellness of the pharmacist professionThe COVID-19 pandemic has placed extraordinary stress on all health-care professionals, including pharmacists. This increased level of stress has highlighted the need to identify coping skills, tools and resources that enhance resilience within the profession and has encouraged discussion about overcoming the stressors that negatively affect mental health and wellness. This webinar will feature experts who will guide this discussion and provide suggestions for resources for pharmacists.(Date TBD summer/fall 2021)

Point-of-care testing and chronic disease managementWith Canadians having convenient access to pharmacists, there is an important role that pharmacists play in supporting their patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. This webinar will feature pharmacists who are using point-of-care testing to optimally manage their patients with chronic diseases.(Date TBD, summer/fall 2021)
