What is Web Development?

• Web Development:

• A broad term for any activity related to developing a website for the World Wide Web or an internet.

• Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.

• “Web Development" usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding.

What is a Website?

• Website:• a collection of related web pages, images, videos or

other digital assets that are addressed with a common domain name or IP address.

• The pages of a web site can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) called the homepage.

• Example: http://www.BizCentralUSA.com

• A web site is hosted on a web server, accessible via the Internet or private Local Area Network (LAN).

• Website Design is a skill in creating a number of presentations that will act as a representation and open book of ‘something’ on the internet.

Elements of a Website

• Every website should have the five most common pages:

• Homepage• About Us• Contact Us• Products/Services/Mission information• Sitemap

• All websites start with a "Home" page. From there, the visitor will expect other conventional pages such as "About Us" and "Contact Us". Along with pages that describe your products or services.

Homepage

• The homepage is the URL or local file that automatically loads when a web browser starts or when the browser's "home" button is pressed.

• A homepage usually contains:• A general welcome message or overview about the

company or organization.• The companies logo.• Any special promotions or events going on in the

form of graphic banners or media.• A navigation bar that can guide users to other

points on a website.

About Us

• The About Us page should effectively explain the company's purpose and what it stands for:

• An ‘About Us’ page usually contains:• Background information

on founding and history of the company.

• Awards and distinguished honors the company has received.

• Information on corporate programs and company initiatives.

• Team/Staff member biographies and company structure.

• A ‘Contact Us’ page usually consists of:

• Phone Contact • Fax Contact• Physical Location of

the Office• Directions to the

Office• Email Contact

• The ‘Contact Us’ page serves the purpose of providing the users a variety of ways to contact the company or organization.

Products and Services

• The ‘Products and Services’ page has a primary goal of introducing consumers and users to what a company offers.

• This can usually be done in an overview or list format.

• More in depth pages can be added for each sub-category if a company offers a variety of services.

• Example: You may offer a range of marketing services, but on your main products and services page you simply state “A variety of marketing services”. Under a separate tab you can then list the marketing services you provide such as: press releases, e-newsletter, blogs etc.

Sitemap / Site Index

• A ‘Sitemap’ is a list of pages of a web site accessible to users.

• A ‘Sitemap’ generally lists the pages on a website, typically organized in hierarchical fashion.

• This helps visitors easily find quick access to pages on a website.

• It also contributes to a websites search engine optimization.

• Developing web content involves shaping, negotiating and making many choices involving technical, aesthetic, and usability concerns.

• Developing web information requires keen skills in planning, analysis and technical design.

Web Developer “Lingo”

• Html:• Stands for Hypertext Mark-up

Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. It is coding language commonly used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web.

• CSS:• (Cascading Style Sheet) A standard for

specifying the appearance of text and other elements across an entire web site. CSS was developed for use with HTML in Web pages but is also used in other situations. CSS is typically used to provide a single "library" of styles that are used over and over throughout a large number of related documents, as in a web site.

Web Developer “Lingo”

• ASP:• Microsoft Active Server Page (ASP) is a server-side

scripting technology that can be used to create dynamic and interactive Web applications. An ASP page is an HTML page that contains server-side scripts that are processed by a web server before being sent to the user’s browser. You can combine ASP and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to create powerful interactive websites.

• Web Hosting:• A web hosting service is a type of internet hosting

service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their website accessible via the World Wide Web.

Web Developer “Lingo”

• IP Address:• An IP Address acts as a locator to an assigned device.

Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP Address - if a machine does not have an IP Address, it is not really on the Internet.

• URL:• A URL – Uniform Resource Locator – is the global address

of documents, websites and other resources on the World Wide Web. Every website will have a main URL to which they may choose among those available.

• Browser:• A Client program (software) that is used to look at

various kinds of Internet resources, e.g. Internet Explorer

Optimizing the Website

• Congratulations, you have a website! But what good is it if nobody can find it?

• Search Engine Optimization is the next step that must be completed once a website is complete.

• SEO is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic (visits) to a website from search engines via "natural" ("organic“) search results.

• Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine (Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.)

• A company could have the flashiest, catchy and engaging website ever built, but it does no good if future clients, donors or followers can’t find it.
