Introduction

Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte

▪ The doctoral program will promote resource sharing and closer co-

operation between the leading Latvian universities (RTU and UL).

▪ The focus of the program is Latvian and Baltic students, potentially

offer it for students outside the Baltic region.

▪ To create the program, it is planned to attract experts from the

universities implementing the program - RTU and the University of

Latvia and the leading Baltic universities.

● Maximum allocated time 48 months (extenuating circumstances withstanding);

● Year 1:○ Semester 1: lectures / work on the experiment, split approx. 70 / 30;○ Semester 2: lectures / work on the experiment, split approx. 30 / 70;○ CERN Baltic Group School;○ Seminars (approx. 1 per month);

● Year 2:○ Semester 1: Work on the experiment / workshops / doctoral school;○ Semester 2: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) / work on the experiment;

Seminars (approx. 1 per month, followed by seminars at CERN);

Proposed overall structure

5

● Year 3:○ Semester 1: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) cont. / work on the experiment;○ Semester 2: Work on the experiment / workshops / doctoral school / thesis;○ One international conference;○ Seminars (approx. 1 per month);

● Year 4:○ Semester 1: work on the experiment / doctoral school / thesis;○ Semester 2: work on the experiment / doctoral school / thesis;○ Seminars (approx. 1 per month);

● Minimum time should also be imposed in order to ensure credibility of the diploma;suggest 40 months minimum before submission;

Transition to a dual split

8

● To avoid over-fragmentation, it was decided to focus on a dual split for the program:○ Particle physics - higher focus on ‘blue skies’ high-energy particle physics;○ Accelerator technologies - higher focus on engineering and technology;

● Taught contents remain split into obligatory and choice courses;The line between obligatory-choice and free-choice remains blurred-to-non-existent at this stage;

● Choice subjects will force some overlap both ways and allow full overlap both ways(discussed in a couple of slides);

Page 15: Particle physics and accelerator technologies€¦ · Semester 2: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) / work on the experiment; ... Particle physics - higher focus on ‘blue

[email protected]

Obligatory courses

9

● Should form approx. 30 - 40% of taught credit points;

● Law of higher education mandates that the obligatory (and obligatory-choice) taught courses must be covered by the Latvian universities;

● Guest lecturers, of course, would be admissible for parts of the courses;

Page 16: Particle physics and accelerator technologies€¦ · Semester 2: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) / work on the experiment; ... Particle physics - higher focus on ‘blue

[email protected]

Choice courses

10

● Should form approx. 60 - 70% of taught credit points;● Various choice subjects to be made available to allow for different level of entry:

○ e.g. B.1, B.2, B.3;● Baltic partner involvement is highly desirable;

Page 17: Particle physics and accelerator technologies€¦ · Semester 2: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) / work on the experiment; ... Particle physics - higher focus on ‘blue

[email protected]

Workshops & the doctoral school

11

● Some credits or other method of assessment must be allocated to workshops and the doctoral school;

● The doctoral school should cover career and teaching related items;

● This could include some teaching experience in the partner institutions in EE or LT;

● In general, for these, Baltic partner’s involvement would also be extremely beneficial;

Page 18: Particle physics and accelerator technologies€¦ · Semester 2: Long-term attachment at CERN (or other lab.) / work on the experiment; ... Particle physics - higher focus on ‘blue

[email protected]

Schools / Conferences / Assessment

12

● Additional credits / requirements should also be allocated to a few one-off items, such as the Baltic school and participation in a conference;

● An LTA to a relevant laboratory, e.g. CERN, should also be mandatory;Baltic partners based at said laboratories could eventually help with the supervision;

● The final assessment would be the usual combination of a doctoral thesis and a viva voce.

Discussion points

13

● Study program contents:○ Physics / technology split;○ Amount;○ Taught content;○ Other suggestions;

● Teaching involvement from EE and LT:○ Doctoral schools in EE/LT institutes - could these be employed?○ What could be offered either by lecturers coming to Riga or students going to EE/LT?○ Can entire courses be allocated? To whom?○ Require external experts; welcome commitment;

● All other comments and suggestions - all are welcome!
