Whether you’re a Miss Amazing participant or a loved one that’s helping facilitate her journey, you’re now part of a nationwide network of people that invests in the potential of girls and women with disabilities.

Simply put, Miss Amazing events celebrate the abilities of girls and women with disabilities. However, the social impact of Miss Amazing runs

so much deeper. We’ve consciously chosen the aspects of pageantry that have proven to be the most constructive for our program participants and conducive to social change. As a result, Miss Amazing serves as a platform for girls and women with disabilities to make new friends, develop life skills, and dispel the commonly held myths about their value and potential. Let’s get started!

Review the “Skill Areas” section of this packet to prepare for Miss Amazing. Since the skills gained

from our skill areas translate directly to real life, you can

incorporate “practice” into your everyday routine! For example, you can practice Presentation in Evening Wear when walking through the supermarket or practice answering interview

questions when meeting a new person!

Meals are different in every state. When you receive

your state’s schedule, it will contain the meal information so you can plan in advance. If a participant needs help with

feeding, please make sure that a parent or guardian is

present to do this. Volunteers are not permitted to assist

with feeding.

Your committee members are volunteers that work hard to

coordinate your state Miss Amazing program throughout the year. Their number one priority is to coordinate a quality program that is enjoyable for everyone involved. If you have any questions along the way, send them to the correct representative and you should receive a response

within 72 hours. If you have feedback, please provide it in the survey provided after the event.

At Miss AmazingFrom the moment you submit your application to the moment the curtain closes on the

Final Show, we want you to have a positive and empowering experience. Take a moment to understand what to expect at Miss Amazing so that you can begin the day with confidence!

BUDDIESOne of our goals while you are at Miss Amazing is to give you every tool we can think of to help you succeed. That’s where your Buddy comes in! A Buddy is a volunteer who is completely dedicated to being your Miss Amazing guide. From skills practice to interview to your hair appointment, your Buddy will be there to help you be the most confident you!

Depending on the state program, you will meet your Buddy during registration or orientation. Our state programs typically assign one Buddy to one participant. However, the Buddy-to-participant ratio completely depends on volunteer turnout. Buddies are the most dedicated of all Miss Amazing volunteers, usually returning every year. We find most of our Buddies have experience volunteering in their communities and are passionate about being your Miss Amazing guide!

If a participant would like to have a specific individual be her Buddy, please have that person submit an application online at www.missamazing.org/volunteer-application and specify the participant to which he or she would like to be assigned.

RIGHT-HAND MENThe objective of the Right-Hand Man program is to give boys and men with and without disabilities the opportunity to take center stage as a volunteer with Miss Amazing. Right-hand Men are responsible for accompanying the participants onstage as they present themselves in their evening wear.

If the participant would like to be escorted by someone in particular, that person needs to apply online at www.missamazing.org/volunteer-application. Right-Hand Men attend their own orientation shortly before the final show.

FAQFrequently Asked

Questions

What is the cost of participating in Miss Amazing? The cost of participating in a state Miss Amazing event is 5 cans of food. The total amount of food items are donated back to the community by the state Miss Amazing Queens. If a participant should be crowned queen, the cost of attending National Miss Amazing is a $100 registration fee. Depending on the proceeds collected at her state Miss Amazing event, that fee may be partially or completely covered by the state chapter.

Who qualifies to participate in Miss Amazing?Any girl or woman who meets the definition of disability under the government laws and acts defining a disability (Disability Discrimination Act 1995: “A person has a disability for the purposes of this Act if he has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”) is eligible to participate in a Miss Amazing program. We ask all applicants to submit one of the following documents as proof of qualification: Front page of IEP, IPP, 504 plan, SSI, or physician’s documentation of disability.

Is Miss Amazing a beauty pageant? No. Miss Amazing does not ask its judges to evaluate participants based on physical appearance.

What are participants evaluated on? Our evaluation criteria is not based on talent, beauty, or gracefulness. Instead, we encourage our judges to check their biases at the door, to consider each participant’s unique set of strengths and skills, and to evaluate the extent to which she is using her abilities to her fullest potential in each skill area.

Is Miss Amazing similar to other pageant systems? We’ve thoughtfully chosen the aspects of pageantry that have proven to be most constructive, empowering, and conducive to social change. If you have competed in or been involved with other pageant systems in the past, chances are you will find many similarities and differences between other pageant programs and Miss Amazing. If you have a specific question about Miss Amazing’s protocol and expectations, don’t hesitate to ask your state director.
