We know that our students choose to study part-time for a multitude of reasons. No two life journeys are the same. This is why we offer a uniquely broad range of courses and subjects, designed to run at flexible times to fit around your life and commitments.

We’ve added exciting new courses for the summer, reducing the cost where we can, with the same excellent quality teaching and facilities you’d expect from OCVC.

How to enrol

We recommend that you book a place on your chosen course as soon as possible as places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

1. Look through this course guide and decide which course or courses you would like to study.

2. Some courses will require an interview or a pre-enrolment discussion with one our team to ensure you are apply for the course most suited to you. These are indicated by an “IR” in the end column on the right.

3. Complete your enrolment form and make your payment to secure your place on the course. We can do this for you if you enrol over the phone.

The college reserves the right to cancel any advertised courses should demand not be sufficient.

Payment and fees

How to payAll fees are payable when you enrol and payment can be made by cash, cheque, debit card or credit card. If fees are more than £150 and the course runs for a minimum of 20 weeks, Direct Debit instalments can be arranged.

RefundsIn the unlikely event that we cancel a course, we will refund your fees. We will not refund fees if you choose to leave before completion. Our Refund Policy is available on request.

You are advised not to purchase any materials or equipment for this course until you have received confirmation from the college that there are enough students enrolled for the course to definitely run. In the unfortunate circumstance of a course needing to be cancelled you will be informed at least one week prior to its start date.

Fees explainedThe fees payable depend on your age and situation.

16-18yearoldsYou do not pay for tuition if you are between 16 and 18 years old. Your fees are covered by the Learning & Skills Council. Any cost shown against 16-18 is for course materials, and you must pay these when you enrol. Free tuition is only available on funded courses: where fees do apply they will be indicated in the course information.

19+The fee includes tuition and materials.

19+concessionaryfeesTuition is free if you are on one of the benefits listed below. You will also qualify for free tuition if you are not working and are financially dependent on someone claiming one of these benefits. This programme is offered under the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Professional Education Scheme and replaces the previous Core Management programme. Successful completion of the Leadership and Management programme (Core Management) results in Licentiate membership grade of the Institute. This course can be taken over one year, afternoon and evening, or over two years, one evening a week. Students are expected to attend a residential or sequential weekend (Year 2 for evening students) the cost of which is not included in the fee and must be paid on enrolment. An interview is required for entry to this course.

This qualification emphasises the need for the development of personal management capabilities as a starting point. It focuses then on people and operational management principles and practices, and the development of a basic appreciation of resource control and use. Across all of this it also encompasses the need to make effective use of information in the decision-making process.

Creative Arts

ArtSummerSchoolforYoungArtists

We are launching an Art Summer School for 2011 in Banbury for artists aged 8-14. Running from the last two weeks in August 2011, young artists will have the opportunity to study a range of disciplines and exhibit their work. Come for the whole week and be part of an exhibition of your work at the end of the week. Our artists will work with you to show you many new and exciting art and design skills that you can use at home, in school, or just to improve your visual practice and impress friends. You can take part in model making; mask making; drawing and painting; illustration; cartoon design; in fact you tell us the area you like to work in, and we’ll help you improve. Places of course, are limited, as we want to ensure we give you the right attention.

The courses run for two weeks; come for both weeks or just one. Times are 9.15am to 4pm daily and we will take care of you over lunch times – please bring a packed lunch! All classes will take place in one of our specialist art rooms on the main campus, and all students will be supervised at all times.

This course will teach you to observe plants and flowers, and record them accurately in watercolour, pencil and pen and ink. Ceramics

This course offers an introduction to the materials and technical skills used within ceramics including: hand building, throwing, mould making, surface decoration and glazing. You will be given step-by-step instruction, demonstration and one-to-one technical guidance to help you master and develop these processes. As the course develops, group discussions and tutorials will encourage you to reflect upon the work you have produced and select those processes you wish to take forward, further develop and combine in order to develop your own personal style. Throughout the course personal research will be encouraged and supported by contextual references.

Tutors will provide both a basic range of materials to support the taught sessions and a specialist equipment list which you may wish to purchase in order to extend and further develop your final pieces. DigitalPhotographyforImprovers

This course is for students who have either attended the Digital Photography Beginners course or have some basic knowledge of digital photography. Building upon the Digital Photography for Beginners course, this class sets out to improve photographic skills by being project driven. You will be required to shoot material for your project. With a little class critique we will improve composition, lighting and exposure. We will explore camera settings, the aperture and shutter, metering, compensation and white balance. You will create projects to demonstrate knowledge and application of composition. We will use cameras and software to extend image manipulation skills.

Drawing&Painting–MixedAbility

This course is designed to help you to improve your skills, while presenting new challenges, ideas and approaches. It is structured to suit learners’ pace and levels. Topics covered on the course include: contour drawing to create the guide-line of the composition in basic shape and proportions; pen drawing technique to create different tone and decorative pattern; crosshatching technique to give an impression of shadow and depth in tonal drawing; develop crosshatching technique to create the three-dimensional image of the life model; use laying a wash, wet on wet and dry-brush techniques in gouache painting; basic rules of perspective; colour theory; evaluation of your own and peers’ art works in a class critique of the exhibited samples.

DressmakingforBeginners

Using a commercial paper pattern, you will create a garment to your own measurements. It is possible to finish the garment by the end of the course and in doing this you will learn many garment construction techniques and have the pleasure of wearing the end result. This dressmaking course begins with an introduction to the sewing machine and then you will learn to take and accurately record body measurements. From week two, you will create a garment made to your own measurements, having chosen an appropriate style and the right type and quantity of fabric with support from the tutor. This project gives you many opportunities to learn garment construction techniques including darts, pleats, gathers, zip insertion, buttonholes, sleeve insertion and seam and hem finishes.

Improvers’Dressmaking/Tailoring

If you are comfortable with the basics of dressmaking (such as seams and darts), then be adventurous and make fitted clothes for a fraction of the retail cost. We can advise you on your choice of project and help you towards its completion each week. You will learn design tips and be able to experiment with different styles and ideas. You will learn how to improve on skills already learnt and learn how to set in sleeves, produce collars, pockets, cuffs, fly zips and make more advanced pattern adaptations using more complex fabrics. You will need to bring a commercial pattern or firm idea of what you want to make to the session. On this course you will build a reference file of terms, techniques and processes to enable you to follow a commercial pattern and make a garment successfully.

Jewellery&Metalwork

This course will encourage you to design and make jewellery in silver or base metals using traditional techniques. The course is for both beginners and experienced students. You may choose to make rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces etc, working at your own pace with individual guidance from the tutor in a well-equipped open workshop. Beginners will learn basic techniques during a set project in the first weeks, followed by further skills appropriate to your own designs. More advanced students will develop their own ideas with design and technical guidance from the tutor. Subjects covered include design, cutting and sewing, annealling, soldering, texturing, plannishing, doming, chainwork, polishing and finishing. You will work in our new workshop, benefitting from the latest design equipment.

Pottery

This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced potters alike. You will learn to develop new skills and produce fine ceramics. Your completed work will require a couple of weeks to dry and be fired and glazed during the course and should be finished before it ends. You will gain a sound knowledge of a ceramics workshop and the processes used. You will be encouraged to explore the properties of clay using a variety of forming and decorating techniques. Forming: throwing, coiling, slabbing, slip casting. Decoration: slap trailing, glazing, on-glaze painting. TraditionalUpholstery-Banbury:NorthOxfordAcademy

This is a practical upholstery class where you can work on your own furniture, either simple or more complex, e.g. fireside chair, winged chair or armchair with springs and buttoned back. You will learn how to restore it in the style of your choice under the guidance of our tutor, who will help you to acquire traditional manual restoration techniques. We are unable to store your furniture between classes and suggest you work on smaller items of furniture like chairs or stools. Techniques covered include stripping to the frame; webbing; stuffing and applying hessian; stitching or tying springs; bridle ties; stitching edges; stitching through seat; applying calico, pad and applying top cover.

PTLLS is the first stage of the Qualified Teacher – Learning and Skills (QTLS) qualification framework and is ideal for those who are considering a career change into teaching adults.

This award aims to provide a sound introduction to the concepts of teaching. This course will be held as an intensive course over five days straddling a weekend or in longer periods of 5 and 10 weeks. Participants teach a 15-30 minute micro lesson and complete a number of written assignments. This course is ideal preparation for progression on to the Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning (CTLLS) or the Cert Ed/PGCE.

Entry requirements: Level 2 literacy and numeracy, plus a qualification in the subject in which you wish to teach, usually a minimum of Level 3. DyslexiaAwareness

This course is a level 2 OCN accredited course that is completed over eight weeks. Attendance at a weekly class is required. The overall aim of the course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the types of difficulties encountered by learners with dyslexia and, to explore strategies for supporting individuals with dyslexia in a learning context.

Entry requirements: the course is suitable for people who are required to support, or are supporting, dyslexic learners within an educational context.

From M40, leave the motorway at Junction 11 and leave roundabout onto A422.

Continue down A422 and leave roundabout onto A361, Southam Road. Turn left on A361 (Southam Road) on to Horse Fair. Leave the roundabout onto B4035, West Bar Street. Follow West Bar Street on to Broughton Road and the main entrance to the campus is on the right hand side.

The Banbury campus is approximately 15-20 minutes walk from the train and bus stations.

From Bicester North train stationOn leaving the station turn right on to Buckingham Road and continue until you reach Churchill Road on your right. Follow Churchill Road to the end and turn left into Launton Road. Continue and turn right into Telford Road and then take the first left. The campus is at the far end on the left. Walking time 30 minutes.

From Bicester Town train stationOn leaving the station turn left into London Road and continue until you reach the turning on your right for Launton Road. Follow Launton Road and turn right when you reach Telford Road and then take the first left. The campus is at the far end on the left. Walking time 35 minutes.

From Bicester bus stationOn leaving the station turn left on to Manorsfield Road, continue past the Market Square until you reach the turning on your left for Launton Road. Follow Launton Road until you reach Telford Industrial Estate on your right. Turn right on to Telford Road and take the first left. The campus is at the far end on the left. Walking time 40 minutes.

By CarApproach from the City ring road to the BMW Works roundabout. This roundabout is easy to recognise because it is at the heart of the BMW Works area. Turn away from the direction of the City (right if travelling anti-clockwise, left if clockwise). Proceed along Garsington Road and Watlington Road, passing through two sets of traffic lights. At the third set opposite Johnson’s Home Centre turn right into Cuddesdon Way, the College is a few hundred yards along this road on the left hand side.

By BusOxford Bus Co. No. 5 & Stagecoach No. 1 both run a regular service. The main city centre stops are in Queen Street, numbered F4 for Oxford Bus Co. and F7 for Stagecoach. The Stagecoach route also stops at the railway station. You need to get off at Balfour Road and walk back up to Blackbird Leys Road (this is the road that the bus has just turned off).

Turn left and continue to the junction with Cuddesdon Way (row of shops on your right). Turn left into Cuddesdon Way and the Blackbird Leys campus is on your right.

From Ring Road use EITHER Banbury Road or Woodstock Road to City Centre. At traffic lights, end of St. Giles, turn right into Beaumont Street and follow signs to Rail Station. At second set of traffic lights, i.e. at the bottom of Park End Street, turn left into Oxpens Road (ice rink). The college is ¼ mile on the left.

From South (Newbury) A34. Turn off A34 to Southern bypass towards Cowley. At next roundabout, turn left to City Centre (park and ride on left). Follow Abingdon Road to end, turn left towards ice rink and parks. The college is opposite the ice rink.

From A423 (Henley/Reading) join Ring Road (at Sainsbury’s) and turn left at next roundabout and right at following roundabout towards city centre and ice rink.

From East (London) M40/A40. At the end of A40 turn left at roundabout signed Cowley. Continue on the Ring Road, (4 roundabouts) to Abingdon Road, City Centre and Ice Rink.

The Oxford campus is 10 minutes walk from the main rail and coach stations in Oxford.
