Enrolment Instructions - Summer Term 2019 For students in their first year and students currently on their International Placement Year

Week 21: on-line enrolment period 24 April – 1 May, follow the information you have received from Student Registry. There will also be a link from the your student portal.

This is the only on-line enrolment period; any further changes at any other time of the year must be made by your administering department.

You must enrol for modules per academic year, as indicated in the section on ‘Degree Programmes’ on pages 17-26. For a detailed description of course modules you should refer to the online courses handbook (http://www.lusi.lancaster.ac.uk/CoursesHandbook/), which is also accessible from your student portal.

The enrolment will be based on your current scheme of study, so if you are planning to change degree scheme you must change this first before you can enrol for your courses. To change your degree scheme you will need to complete a ‘Change of Degree Programme’ form. Forms are also available from your Part I departmental coordinator (Annik Taylor in DeLC).

Week 22: course enrolment is checked by Part II Coordinators.

Week 23: Should we find your enrolment incomplete, then we will invite you (by email) to visit the department. Please check your emails on the 8th and 9th of May and follow our instructions.

Departmental Notes

For students who are thinking of studying languages at Part II, the department offers a wide range of four-year degree programmes (including an International Placement Year) involving French, German and Spanish Studies, either separately or in combination. In addition to language skills courses, there are options in language studies, cultural studies, society, history, politics, literature and the arts, media and business.

As a Part II student in Languages and Cultures the following options are open to you:

• Single Major in French, German or Spanish (with a strongly recommended minor in a second language including Italian and Chinese).

• Two-Language Joint Major (French, German, Spanish). • Modern Languages (degree in three languages, which can include Italian or Chinese) • Joint Majors: One Language and Another Subject in another department • Management Studies and European Languages (MSEL) (last entry into Part II in

18/19) • French/German/Spanish Studies and Management (from 19/20) • Minor (15-60 credits offered in by the Department)

Credit Points All Single and Joint BA Major Programmes in Languages and Cultures involve FOUR years of study.

Part I consist of 120 credit points, Part II consists of 270 credit points including an International Placement Year. Students register for 240 Lancaster-based modules (120 credits in the second year and 120 credits in the final year) plus 30 credits DELC310, the International Placement Year module.

Thus the Total Credit Points for all four years of our main UG Language schemes are 390 credits.

Part I pre-requisites for following Part II courses As a pre-requisite to following Part II courses in a language it is normally necessary for students to have studied and been assessed in that language at Part I.

As a pre-requisite for Final Year language, spending a year on an International Placement Year using the relevant language is compulsory.

For pre-requisites relating to particular degree schemes or modules, see the online courses handbook under the scheme in question. Please also check the online courses handbook for any language pre-requisites before enrolling.

Year of Study Final year courses cannot be taken by second year students. Second year courses cannot normally be taken by Final Year students.

Assessment of Courses Following coursework throughout the year, most of our courses are examined in the main summer examination period of the year in which they are studied, unless indicated otherwise. Assessment details for each module can be found in the online courses handbook. CHIN300 is examined at the end of the module.

Assessment for all language modules (200/201, 200i/201i, 300/301 and 300i/301i) is by coursework (40%) and examination (60%).

The International Placement Year The International Placement Year is compulsory for Single and Joint Major Language students, who must spend at least 8 months abroad in their third year. The International Placement Year is assessed and counts for 30 credits. See page 13 for more information.

The MLang International Placement Year is explained under the degree programme on pages 25-26.

Dissertation All Single Major students must write a 30-credit dissertation (DELC320) in their subject area in their final year. See page 15 for more information.

DELC200 Preparation All Single and Joint Majors students enroll on this non-credit bearing module in their second year. This module includes a number of workshops and meetings aimed at ‘academic skills and employability’ and at ‘International Placement Year preparation’. All sessions are timetabled. For more information see page 14.

Minimum Quotas Provision of an options module is normally subject to a minimum quota of 6 students. We try our best not to withdraw modules, but if this should happen, the students involved will be notified as soon as possible and asked to choose an alternative module. Maximum quotas may be in place.

Availability Modules are offered subject to availability. Staff changes and other circumstances (such as research leave or illness) can lead to modules being withdrawn; in such circumstances the Department will attempt to replace them with other modules, subject to resources permitting.

Enrolment Changes Changes to module enrolments are allowed until the Friday of the second week of term in both Michaelmas and Lent. Please contact your Part II Coordinator to make these changes. This cannot be done online! Changes to the Dissertation must be finalised before the start of the Michaelmas Term in Final Year and please note that switching to DELC216 is not possible after November of the academic year in which that course is taught.

LANGUAGE MODULES

For each language, two integrated modules (200 and 201) or (200i and 201i), make up the second-year language course for Single Majors, Joint Majors and Minor students in Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The two modules may not be taken independently. Students who have taken the Intensive language course (100) in their first year normally follow an Intensive course throughout the second year (200i/201i), taught separately from students who have taken the Advanced course (101) and who will be studying 200/201 courses in year 2.

These courses aim to enhance students’ linguistic proficiency, with particular emphasis on speaking the language in a range of settings (200, 200i), and their ability to write fluently and accurately in a variety of registers (201, 201i). The courses also aim to broaden and deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of different aspects of modern society, politics and culture, contemporary issues and institutions in countries where the language is spoken, and to prepare them for residence abroad.

In the final year the integrated courses 300/301 are followed by all Single and Joint Major students who have completed an International Placement Year. The modules may not be taken independently. Written, grammar and oral work continues with increasing focus on translation into English and the foreign language.

A Chinese minor language route continuing from CHIN100 consists of the intensive course CHIN200i/CHIN201i (30 credits) in second year and CHIN300 (15 credits) in final year. Students can add the culture module DELC330 in their final year to complete a 60 credits minor in Chinese.

Italian can be taken as a 30-credit or 60-credit minor language. In year 2 students will follow the Intensive course (ITAL200i and ITAL201i); in the final year students study (ITAL300i and ITAL301i).

Core Modules

Besides the language modules, there are a small number of core modules which every major student should follow.

SECOND YEAR CULTURE CORE MODULES

The department offers three language-specific compulsory core modules, FREN233, GERM233 and SPAN233. These core modules are taught in a weekly lecture or seminar over the whole academic year. Together with your Part 1 Culture course, they are designed to help you deepen your understanding of the culture, history and politics of the contexts in which the languages you are studying are spoken. The modules introduce you to influential thinkers and cultural products (films, novels, poetry) to invite reflection on how contemporary France, Germany and Spain have been shaped by their past.

These are 15 credit modules taught for 1 hour per week during both Michaelmas and Lent:

This is a series of workshops and meetings to prepare students for the International Placement Year and the written assessment in Part II (this module is non-credit bearing but attendance will be monitored). It runs from weeks 1-28 of the academic year, culminating in the Preparation Course for a full 5 days in week 28 or 29 (TBC). Module enrolment on DELC200 is compulsory for all Single and Combined Major students in DeLC.

INTERNATIONAL PLACEMENT YEAR (3)

DELC310 International Placement Year: intercultural and academic reflection

The International Placement Year is compulsory for Single and Joint Major Language students, who must spend at least 8 months abroad in their third year. The International Placement Year is assessed and counts for 30 credits.

Requests for prior exemption will only be considered from students who can satisfy the department that they have already met the requirements for residence abroad.

Joint Major students studying two languages may choose to spend the year in either of the two countries concerned or, if appropriate arrangements can be made, they can spend a semester in each country. If the International Placement Year is spent in one country, then they are strongly advised to spend some time in the country of their second language during the summer months. Students who started a language as beginners in Part I must spend a minimum of 4 months in a country where that language is spoken.

Modern Languages students studying three languages must split their International Placement Year between two countries and are advised to spend some time in the country of their third language during the summer months.

Students can undertake either a study placement at a partner university or a work placement (in a company or as English Language Assistants through the British Council).

The International Placement Year will be assessed by means of a written project(s) in the foreign language(s), plus examination marks for the students on a study placement.

During the summer term Second Year students will confirm their choices of activities with the relevant International Placement Year Tutor and must attend the compulsory International Placement Year Preparation Course in week 28. Once abroad, no changes are allowed to the agreed programme without consultation with and approval from DeLC.

Non-taught Modules

SECOND YEAR WORK BASED MODULE

DELC216 Professional Contexts for Modern Languages

DELC216 is a work based module open to all major language students. Students interested in this module should enrol as normal. Acceptance on the modules is pending an interview in week 24/25 of the Sumer Term of enrolment. There will be some events during Michaelmas of your second year, with the module scheduled for Lent term of the second year. All placements must be in place by the end of Michaelmas of your second year.

DELC216 seeks to support students on single and joint major degrees with DeLC to apply their linguistic and cultural understanding in a specific professional context. Students will develop, reflect on and articulate the range of competences, and the linguistic and cross cultural skills that enhance employability by working in language-related professional contexts and reflecting on key issues in relation to their placement organisation. Students will typically spend between 25-30 hours over a period of 10 weeks engaging with a placement organisation between January and March. Alternatively students may undertake a 'block' placement over a two to three week period during the Easter vacation (this will allow placements abroad). Students will receive some preparation for the module. This will

consist of short interviews and the sourcing and confirmation of placements. For students undertaking schools placements, there will also be some training in Michaelmas term. Alongside the placements, workshops will provide guidance on placements and on reflective academic work. Students will share their experiences and learning with each other by means of end-of-module presentations.

FINAL YEAR DISSERTATION

DELC320 Dissertation (30 credits)

This module, assessed entirely by written dissertation, allows students to pursue a topic of their own interest, not covered in taught options, leading to the production of one dissertation of approx. 10,000 words. The only restrictions on topic choice are that (a) the topic is capable of being approached from a serious academic angle, (b) it falls within the remit of the degree scheme and (c) it falls within the range of expertise of a member of the Department’s staff. Regular supervision is provided by the relevant lecturer, including feedback on the first draft of the completed dissertation.

For Single Major Language Students, the DELC320 Dissertation is a Compulsory module, which should automatically appear on their enrolment list.

Joint Major Students in two languages may focus their dissertation on either one of the languages and choose a dissertation to meet the language specific culture module requirement for that language. Alternatively, they may take a more comparative approach, in which case they would choose two language specific culture modules and enrol on the dissertation as part of their freely chosen culture modules requirement.

Joint Major Students with a non-language subject can choose the DELC320 Dissertation as an Option module, provided they are not enrolled on a dissertation in their other department. In this case students should discuss their options with the Director of Undergraduate Courses in DeLC prior to enrolling. Students taking this option will replace both taught DeLC modules with the dissertation, alongside their language modules. They will focus their dissertation on the language they are studying but are encouraged to integrate both subjects into their dissertation.

Organisation of this module

Second Year, week 6 (Michaelmas term): ‘Writing and Research Skills Workshop’. This is a compulsory workshop for all major students in DeLC and you will be expected to attend this.

Second Year, week 13 (Lent term): Introductory talk for dissertations. At this talk the procedure for choosing a topic, sending in a proposal and being allocated a supervisor will be explained. We expect all major students to attend this talk, even if you are at that point not interested in enrolling on DELC 320. Experience tells us that a number of students change their mind before the final year and it is not normally possible to enrol students onto this module without having attended the introductory talk.

All students with ‘an interest’ in a dissertation (even if not a firm interest) will be enrolled at this point, to enable access to all the course materials. For Joint Major students, dropping the dissertation module at any point is no problem, provided alternative taught modules are available.

Second Year, week 28 (Summer term) or before: During the summer term of your second year you will finalise all details at a meeting with your supervisor, prior to your departure on your International Placement Year. The topic is agreed and discussed at this point and preparatory research normally begins during the International Placement Year.

End of International Placement Year/Welcome Week before your final year: For students who are inspired during their International Placement Year, the last opportunity to enrol on this module is during Welcome Week before your final year, when we finalise your enrolment. If you wish to enrol at this point, then you will submit your dissertation proposal at the same time.

Final Year, week 5 (Michaelmas term): If you have not yet done so, you submit your Plan, outlining the basis of the dissertation, to your supervisor and meet to discuss this. You agree on a schedule for further supervision meetings.

Final Year, week 12/13 (Lent term): A First Draft of the completed dissertation to be submitted to your supervisor.

Final Year, Monday week 22 (Summer Term): The Final Submission Deadline, the dissertation must be completed and submitted not later than the Monday of the second week of the summer term of the final year.

For more detailed information on all procedures please see the dissertation booklet on the DELC320 Course Moodle (enrolment required or available on request from the course convenor).

DELC320 is not available to Joint Major students who are enrolled on a dissertation in another department; nor as a minor subject.

Joint Major schemes are administered by either DeLC or your other Department. Where DeLC is the administering department, we will oversee your enrolment and academic progress, working together with your other Department. We administer joint schemes with Computing, Criminology (Law), English Literature, Film, History, Linguistics, Maths, Philosophy and Politics.

DELC is not the administering department if combined with the following courses:

However, your International Placement Year (module DELC310) is organised by DeLC for all degree schemes and you will be guided by and liaise with our International Placement Year tutors.

MLang International Placement Year

Students on the MLang scheme prepare for their Second Year on an International Placement Year, whilst they are in their First Year. They will participate in the relevant DELC200 preparation sessions and receive further guidance from their International Placement Year Tutor and the Scheme Convenor.

The minimum International Placement Year time requirement for all DeLC degree schemes is 8 months, this also applies to the MLang.

For the MLang International Placement Year, students will spend two semesters studying at one of our partner universities. Students who study 2 languages must split the year between two partner universities.

You will choose from a range of Postgraduate modules in DELC or other departments in the Faculty with their agreement. The Postgraduate Director will meet you at the start of the third year to provide academic advice.

Students who have chosen the MLang scheme with two languages are very strongly encouraged to also spend their summers abroad. It is especially recommended that they organise an activity during the summer prior to their International Placement Year. This can be for example attendance at a language course or a work placement.

MLang Progression arrangements

To progress from Part 1 to Part 2, a score of 16 in the major component(s) is required to ensure that the student has adequate language expertise to cope with and benefit from the demands of studying abroad in Year 2 in their target language(s). Students are required to achieve 12 in the minor component(s).

To progress from Year 2 to Year 3, students must achieve, at the first sitting, a cumulative overall aggregation score of 9.0 (with no more than 30 credits condoned).

To progress from Year 3 to Year 4, students must achieve, at the first sitting, a cumulative overall aggregation score of 14.5 over the Part II studies completed up to that point with no more than 30 credits condoned in total over years 2 and 3.

Should an MLang student not achieve the grades necessary for progression from Year 2 (International Placement Year) to Year 3 or from Year 3 to Year 4 but have otherwise achieved at a sufficient level to qualify for a BA (Majors) they will then be considered for transfer to the ‘exit route’ on the BA (Hons) French Language, German Language or Spanish Language degree.
