PART 4 WELDED SHAPES - PROPERTIES AND DIMENSIONS

General

The tables of properties and dimensions of Welded Wide-Flange (WWF) and Welded Reduced-Flange (WRF) shapes on the following pages are reprinted from the Handbook of Steel Construction, 10th Edition. They are intended mainly for designers involved in renovation projects.

Manufacture

Welded shapes are produced to the requirements of the CSA G40.20 Standard, using plate meeting the material requirements of CSA G40.21. The G40.20 Standard defines welded shapes as I-type sections produced by automatic welding processes from three individual components. Hot-rolled plates are flame-cut to the required width, then assembled together on a special jig where pressure rolls hold the flange and web plates in contact for automatic submerged arc welding. Welds are made simultaneously along both flange-to-web joints in the horizontal fillet position.

For web thicknesses up to and including 20 mm, the flange-to-web welds develop the full capacity of the flange-to-web joint. For web thicknesses greater than 20 mm, which occur in the heavier WWF column shapes, the full strength of the web is not developed by the web-to-flange welds. Column WWF shapes with partial-strength web welds are identified by asterisks (**), and the note "welding does not fully develop the web strength for these sections".

Products

WWF beams range in depth from 700 mm to 2000 mm and have equal-width flanges which range in width between 300 mm and 550 mm. Flange thickness varies while the overall depth of beams in each size range is constant.

WWF column shapes range in depth and width from 350 mm to 650 mm in increments of 50 mm. Overall depth and flange width in each size range is the same.

WRF shapes are asymmetrical beams in which one flange is narrower than the other. Overall depths vary from 1000 mm to 1800 mm and are constant for all beams in each range. Flange widths are 300 mm and 550 mm.

Availability of WWF and WRF Shapes

Essar Steel Algoma Inc. had been the prime producer until their production of welded shapes discontinued in late 2010. WWF beam and column shapes, and WRF shapes are generally not carried in inventory. As an alternative, a designer may consider a three-plate section welded to the requirements of CSA Standard W59.
