For many years, Muslims inNazareth, the city where Je-sus grew up, have wanted to

build a mosque near the Church ofthe Annunciation, with twominarets that would be taller thanthe church. Luckily, nothing hasever come of it. However, there is asmall mosque at a central location, which is used to address all passingvisitors with Koran verses on largeplacards as they make their way tothe church. At first glance, one of those

verses appears to be very positiveand generally acceptable. The Eng-lish translation reads as follows:“Say: ‘We have believed in Allahand what was revealed to us, andwhat was revealed to Abraham,Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the de-

scendants, and in what was givento Moses and Jesus and to theprophets from their Lord. Wemake no distinction between anyof them, and we are Muslims [sub-mitting] to him.”The catch is that Jesus is placed

on the same level as all the others. In other words, He is not the Sonof God and is not the Savior, whotook away the sin of the worldthrough His sacrificial death on thecross. The Koran gives Jesus the out-

standing title of “Prophet,” but de-nies the basic beliefs ofChristianity: that Jesus was born ofa virgin, is the Son of God, andthat He died on the cross and roseagain from the dead. Muslims donot believe that He is the Lord of

Lords and the judge of the livingand the dead, nor that God the Fa-ther gave Him all power in heavenand earth. From a purely human perspec-

tive, these things are not easy tograsp and understand. They are ul-timately a matter of faith, andmust be accepted through the com-plete testimony of the Old andNew Testaments. The Koran attests that God

Himself gave the Israelites the OldTestament and Christians the NewTestament. Understandably, thisstatement from the Koran presentsa big problem for Islam, becausethey believe that their religion con-tradicts the Old and New Testa-ments. But the Koran itself teachesthat they came from God.This problem is resolved within

Islam quite simply, by saying thatthe Jews and Christians changedtheir scriptures after receivingthem, and therefore they no longeragree with the Koran.Attempts to relativize the differ-

ences today, through inter-religiousdiscussion, will only lead to a loss

of the truth. Without a doubt, tol-erance is fundamentally importantto the social existence of mankind. But when tolerance means that thetruth I believe in isn’t true, becauseother people believe that truth isrelative, then we have a problem.Real tolerance could be demon-

strated in a Muslim city, such asNazareth, if a banner could behung that reads, “Salvation isfound in no one else, for there is noother name under heaven given tomankind by which we must besaved, except the name of JesusChrist.”We understand that this isn’t go-

ing to happen. Real tolerancewould be actually having the com-plete freedom to speak the truth, while accepting others who seethings differently.Thankful that we are still rela-

tively free to proclaim that Jesus isthe way, the truth and the life, andthat no one comes to the Fatherexcept through Him,Shalom,

“They have,” as the

Lord says throughJoel, “parted my

land.” The Middle East conflictis described as the dispute betweenIsrael and the Palestinian leadershipover the same land. The disputehas lasted for decades and pro-voked several wars. Tyre, Sidon, and the region of Philistia are stillextremely hostile to Jews. Dr.Roger Liebi points out that “Philis-tia” denotes the land of thePhilistines. The word “Palestinian”has its origin in the Latin wordfor Philistine. In Arabic it is easierto see. The word for Philistine inthe Arabic Bible is Filastini. “Onepossible modern translation wouldbe ‘Palestinian territories.’”

In fact, the fight for the landbegan with the re-entry of Jewsinto their millennia-old homeland. The Jews claimed their homeland;the world powers were strugglingfor a solution, and the Arab Stateswould have preferred a “FinalSolution.” The UN, in which thepeoples unite, doesn’t pay attentionto the fact that God says that they“parted my land.” The nations

believe they can dispute Israel’sright to the land with one resolu-tion after another. They don’t real-ize they are rebelling against God,and that He will hold themaccountable.

The Europe Israel Press Asso-ciation writes: “On November29, 1947, the UN General Assem-bly voted and accepted the par-tition resolution, by 33 votes to13. The plan called for the par-tition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and the other Arab.According to the partition plan, the Jewish state was to receiveabout one-third of the small, fertile coastal plain with Galilee, and about two-thirds of the large, barren area of the Negev desert;altogether 56.47% of the remain-ing mandate of Palestine withoutJordan. The Negev desert couldnot be used for agriculture at thattime, nor could any cities be builtthere.

“According to the UnitedNations Partition Plan, the areaincluding Jerusalem and Bethle-hem would become an interna-tional zone.

“The Zionist leadership offi-cially accepted the UN PartitionPlan, although it had hoped tofind a way to extend the bordersof the Jewish state. The PalestinianArabs and the surrounding Arabstates, on the other hand, rejectedthe UN Partition Plan and con-sidered the vote of the GeneralAssembly an international betrayal.Subsequently, they launched acoordinated military attack againstthe Jews just days after the adop-tion of the UN plan.”

The ensuing wars alwaysinvolved sharing the land, estab-lishing a Palestinian state, not rec-ognizing Jerusalem as the capitalof Israel, and eliminating the Jewsas thoroughly as possible. Theinternational community aspiredand strove for a two-state solution;this ended up as Palestinian self-governing areas. Terms such as“Camp David I and II Accords”and “Oslo Accords I and II” wentdown in history. At the time ofCamp David II in 2000, Israel’sPrime Minister Ehud Barak offeredPalestinian leader Yasser Arafatthe relinquishment of 95% of the

Gaza Strip and the West Bank, aswell as the declaration of partsof East Jerusalem as the Palestiniancapital. But Arafat refused. If any-thing, the Palestinians are pushingfor two separate states within the1967 borders, which would besuicidal for the Israelis to accept.

Due to the horrible terrorismthat killed many civilians, theIsraeli government was forced tobuild fences and walls that sepa-rated the Jewish territories fromthe Palestinian. The East Bankfell to the Jordanians, and theWest Bank is repeatedly disputed. The US is aiming for a two-statesolution and repeatedly offersitself as a mediator, but has failedthus far. In February 2017, USPresident Donald Trump said,“I’m looking at a two-state andone-state, and I like the one thatboth parties like. I could live witheither one.”

Seen from the prophetic Wordof the Bible, there could well bea division in Israel and Jerusalem. Not only does Joel address this, but also Jesus. Jerusalem will becrushed by the nations until the

times of the nations are fulfilled(Luke 21:24; Rev 11:2). But thetimes of the nations only come toan end with the Great Tribulationand the subsequent return of Jesusin glory. The future therefore willbe very exciting, and we can seehow current Joel’s prophecy is.

The land conflicts have alwaysled to wars, and it’s likely to getworse. Zechariah also reports onthis: “Behold, I will makeJerusalem a cup of trembling untoall the people round about, whenthey shall be in the siege bothagainst Judah and againstJerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensomestone for all people: all that burdenthemselves with it shall be cut inpieces, though all the people ofthe earth be gathered togetheragainst it” (Zech 12:2-3).

This leads us to the next pointin Joel’s chronological prediction:“Proclaim ye this among the Gen-tiles; Prepare war, wake up themighty men, let all the men of wardraw near; let them come up: Beatyour plowshares into swords andyour pruninghooks into spears:

let the weak say, I am strong.Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather your-selves together round about: thithercause thy mighty ones to comedown, O LORD. Let the heathen

Multitudes, multitudesin the valley of decision: for theday of the LORD is near in the

valley of decision” (Joel 3:9-14).

In His well-known discourseconcerning the signs of the endof the age, given on the Mountof Olives, Jesus Christ spoke ofwars and rumors of war, of nationsin dispute, as in the beginning oflabor (Matt 24:6-8). The openingof the second seal in Revelation, for the dawning of the Day of the

It was prophesied by Daniel,“And after threescore and twoweeks shall Messiah be cut off,but not for himself: and the peopleof the prince that shall come shalldestroy the city and the sanctuary;and the end thereof shall be witha flood, and unto the end of thewar desolations are determined”(Dan 9:26).

That is exactly the course ofour world history: the Messiahwas crucified. Later, the Romanscame and destroyed Jerusalemand the temple in 70 AD and 135AD, in an overflowing tide. Fromthat time onward, the history ofthe city would be filled with warand destruction. And indeed, sincethen wars and devastation—espe-cially concerning Judaism—havebeen raging incessantly. This willcontinue all the way until the endcomes.

Wars, uprisings, riots againstJudaism, pogroms, persecutions,Islamic oppression, inquisitions,

the First and Second World Wars, conflicts and terrorism after thereturn of the Jews to their land…it will continue until the return ofthe Lord. And this end will be thecompletion of the age and the endof the times of the nations (Matt24:3; Luke 21:24). “But he thatshall endure unto the end, thesame shall be saved. And thisgospel of the kingdom shall bepreached in all the world for awitness unto all nations; and thenshall the end come” (Matt 24:13-14).

Revelation 16 speaks of thebattle of Armageddon: “And hegathered them together into a placecalled in the Hebrew tongueArmageddon” (v. 16). This state-ment is based on the statement inJoel 3:11, because it seems to bethe same event: “Assemble your-selves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves togetherround about: thither cause thymighty ones to come down, OLORD.” The final battle of the

valley of Jehoshaphat begins inArmageddon, and then enters thevalley. In the midst of the world’sdisastrous story, God writes Hisstory of salvation. Throughoutall the wars and times of crisis, itagain came to the Jewish state. The still-existent Judaism is a signof God maintaining His covenantswith Israel. It is He who gathersthe peoples for judgment.Jehoshaphat means “Yahwehjudges.” There He will go to courtwith the peoples, and the Lordwill appear in glory in that region.Israel is saved there in its mostdifficult hour.

“The sun and the moon shallbe darkened, and the stars shallwithdraw their shining” (Joel3:15). This statement was alreadyanticipated in Joel 2:10, and isrepeated here. So, before the HolySpirit is poured out on all flesh,a Great Tribulation is in store.Israel will be in great distress.Allied nations will oppose Israel;there will be a covenant with the

West. Nations will attack Israelunder the leadership of theAntichrist. There will also be acovenant of the peoples of thenorth and east (Dan 11; Rev 16),but God will intervene fromheaven.

For the judgment, both Joel3:13 and Revelation 14:14-20 usethe image of the reaping and har-vesting of grapes. Jesus Christmentions that the sun and themoon will be darkened (Matt24:29). Revelation 6:14 speaksvividly of the heavens being rolledup like a scroll. All these formu-lations follow the same course.

“The LORD also shall roar outof Zion, and utter his voice fromJerusalem; and the heavens andthe earth shall shake: but theLORD will be the hope of hispeople, and the strength of thechildren of Israel. So shall ye knowthat I am the LORD your Goddwelling in Zion, my holy moun-tain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass

In those days, the Messiah ofIsrael will return. The times of thenations will come to an end, andIsrael will be saved. First, He willappear on the Mount of Olives, then come to Zion to fight inJerusalem for His people. He isthe “Lion of Judah” (Rev 5:5),who will roar and protect Hispeople. The Israelites will recognizeHim, repent, and accept Him astheir Messiah. Jerusalem will beholy, with the Lord Himselfdwelling in it. And the prophecyfrom Joel 2:27 mentioned at thebeginning of this series will be ful-filled: the Holy Spirit will be pouredout, and the Jews will become themissionary people to the nations.

“And it shall come to pass inthat day, that the mountains shalldrop down new wine, and thehills shall flow with milk, and allthe rivers of Judah shall flow withwaters, and a fountain shall comeforth out of the house of theLORD, and shall water the valleyof Shittim. Egypt shall be a deso-lation, and Edom shall be a des-

olate wilderness, for the violenceagainst the children of Judah, because they have shed innocentblood in their land. But Judahshall dwell for ever, and Jerusalemfrom generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood thatI have not cleansed: for the LORDdwelleth in Zion” (Joel 3:18-21).

The earth will enjoy God’s bless-ings to the full. There will be nomore shortages. The glory of theMessiah will spread over every-thing. A spring will burst forthfrom the coming temple and irri-gate the valley of Shittim, whichlay on the north shore of the DeadSea. This statement aligns withthe prophecies of Ezekiel 47:1-12and Zechariah 14:8. It is a beautifulpicture of the Lord’s victory oversin, death and the devil. WhereHe rules, life is abundant.

The opposite, however, is trueof Egypt and Edom (Jordan). Theywill become a wasteland and desertbecause of their violence againstthe Jewish people, because theyhave raised themselves againstGod and touched the apple of Hiseye. These two places could well

represent all peoples who rise upagainst His Word, His covenants, and His people. In almost everyprophetic word about the Dayof the Lord, these two nationsare mentioned (Ezek 30:3ff.; Jer46:2-10; Isa 34:6-8; Obad). Inthis regard, it’s very interestingand topical that among the Arabstates, only Egypt (1979) andJordan (1994) have signed a peaceagreement with Israel. Is it pos-sible that these peace treaties willsomeday be broken and Israelwill be stabbed in the back, neces-sitating a special judgment? Thus, blessings and curses stand inopposition to each other: in Christis blessing and the fullness of life. But anyone who opposes Himin unbelief and rebels will witheraway spiritually, mentally, andeventually in judgment.

Judah and Jerusalem shallendure forever, which underscoresthe faithfulness of God. Israel isbeing cleansed of its blood guilt,

since the crucifixion of Jesus andits cry, “His blood be on us, andon our children” (Matt 27:25).Forgiveness will lie in the knowl-edge and acceptance of the Mes-siah. The Joel chronology endswith the glorious statement, “theLORD dwelleth in Zion.”

Thus, in Joel, we see prophet-ically and in chronological order:the events of Pentecost (althoughnot yet a complete fulfillment),the church age (hidden from Joel),the renewal of the State of Israel, the division of the land, war, theGreat Tribulation, the return ofthe Lord Jesus, and the messianickingdom. God’s prophetic Wordpromises Israel a restored land,a redeemed people, a holy city, and a glorious King.

Without being able (or want-ing) to calculate a point in time,we can say that we have enteredthe time period shortly beforeChrist’s Second Coming.

Digging Up Queen EstherThe ancient Persian city of Susa is mentioned inthe Book of Esther, the book of Daniel and thebook of Nehemiah—pointing to its importance inthe ancient near east. The ruins of Susa are near thecurrent city of Shush, which had kept the namealive to this day.

Under the Shah of Iran, Jerusalem prize winner Dr.Gabriel Barkai was able to take part at an excavation

in what was once an important Persian capital. “As an Israeliarchaeologist, and as a Jew, I felt as if I took a step into thedrama that takes part in the book of Esther,” he told Ynet, “inthe city in which all the events took place.” He recalled in his interview with Ynet that [during] a bus

trip, at some extremely beautiful point overlooking a grand

valley “the driver stopped and all the pas-sengers got out to give their blessings forthe creator of such beauty.” Susa was one of five major cities in the

Persian empire, which really did extend fromwest India to north-east Africa. The wine-loving king depicted in the book of Estherwas believed by many to be Xerxes theFirst. The Bible wasn’t the only to depict theimportant ruler, he was also the main characterin the Ancient Greek play The Persians byAeschylus. The excavations in Susa had been ongoing

for the past 150 years, the article explained. At the time Barkai was able to visit, theywere run by the French archaeologist dele-gation [DAF] under Jean Perrot. Perrot, who lead DAF in Jerusalem for

nearly 35 years, spoke Hebrew and invitedIsraeli archaeologists to join him, which ishow 25-year-old Barkai ended up there. “One of the things I still remember is

how they built a small garage near the sitewhich was composed entirely of mud bricksbrought in from the dig,” he told Ynet. “Onewould believe these were plain bricks butonce inside I saw they all had inscriptionsfrom different times,” Barkai added. One of the findings was the hall in the

palace of Susa which is known as Apadana.Barkai drew the plan of the palace and callsit “a majestic palace.” Pointing to a series

of carved stone columns he believed it“matches the palace of Ahasuerus from thebook of Esther as it has inside gardens, hallsand courts.”He also remembered how he stayed with

a Jewish family in the city of Shiraz andimpressed the children for his ability to prayin Hebrew. He was the first non-Iranian Jewthey had even seen.“I hope a day will come in which we will

Tel Shiloh is believed to have been the site of thebiblical tabernacle, but not everyone is pleased at

how the ruins are presented to visitors.Like many Holy Land sites, Tel Shiloh sits at the confluence

of competing narratives of archaeology, religion, and national-ism. Critics say the site promotes a narrow interpretation of his-tory popular with Israeli settlers and their Christian supporters. For centuries, Jews, Muslims, and Christians have associat-

ed the site with the home of the biblical tabernacle, the portableshrine where the Israelites housed the Ark of the Covenant.

Finkelstein led excavations at Tel Shiloh inthe 1980s. He said there is evidence ofcontinuous religious activity at the site forcenturies leading up to the early Iron Age,the period associated with the emergenceof the ancient Israelites. As with any archaeological site,

Finkelstein said “our responsibility is togive the facts, and then we can of coursesay that there is more than one way tointerpret the finds.”

No evidence of the tabernacle has beenfound, but archaeologists are looking.Excavations are being carried out by theAssociates for Biblical Research, whosestated aim is “demonstrating the historicalreliability of the Bible through archaeologi-cal and biblical research.”

Commentary: There is no end in sightto discovering Israeli roots in the Prom-ised Land. But, to find hard evidenceof the Biblical tabernacle is all butimpossible, since this tabernacle servedas a portable and temporary residenceof the God of Israel. This structure wasnot built out of stones for permanency.Nevertheless, it is admirable to seehow eagerly Israeli archaeologists areuncovering the ancient past, docu-menting even the smallest finds toshow the Jewish presence in the land.

There is much more that needs tobe shown, for the Promised Land—ofwhich much is presently Arab-occupiedIsraeli territory—reaches up to theEuphrates River in the north. SecondSamuel 8:3 testifies: “David smote alsoHadadezer, the son of Rehob, king ofZobah, as he went to recover his borderat the river Euphrates.” 7002(See Unveiling the Kings of Israel, Item #2258, $29.99.)

It was more than 3,000 years agowhen David became king over Is-rael and conquered Jerusalem. At

that time, the Jebusites dwelled inthe city and the land. They were sosure that David could not conquerthis city that they mocked, “Exceptthou take away the blind and thelame, thou shalt not come in hither:thinking, David cannot come inhither” (2 Samuel 5:6b). Luther’stranslation makes it a little clearer:“…You will not come into this placebecause even our blind and lamewill defeat you.” No details are givenexcept the above introductory Scrip-ture. David conquered the strong-hold of Zion, and it was named theCity of David.

From that point on, Jews have arecorded history of their presence. We know that the city of Jerusalemwas destroyed and the temple burnedin 70 AD by the Roman legions. Vol-

umes of records testify of the Jewishrevolt against the Roman Empire un-der the leadership of Simon barKokhba. As a world power, Romecould not afford to allow such rebel-lion, and reestablished Roman au-thority in the land of Israel. Had theynot rebelled against Rome, the tem-ple would not have been destroyed, and Jews could have continued thetemple service in Jerusalem. That, however, was not the case, becauseprophecy had to be fulfilled.

“And Jesus answering said untohim, Seest thou these great build-ings? there shall not be left one stoneupon another, that shall not bethrown down” (Mark 13:2). It is ofinterest that very little of the secondtemple is being identified or foundtoday, while Roman buildings can beseen all over Europe, northernAfrica, and parts of Asia. The Colos-seum in Rome is a major tourist at-

traction; it still stands, but there isnothing left of the temple inJerusalem. How precise thisprophecy was fulfilled!

About the city of Jerusalem,Wikipedia writes: “The city ofJerusalem is sacred to a number ofreligious traditions including theAbrahamic religions of Judaism,Christianity, and Islam, which con-sider it a holy site. Some of themore sacred places for each of thereligions are found in Jerusalem, and the one shared between allthree is the Temple Mount.” Bibli-cally speaking, this is not precise, because for Christians, Israel,Jerusalem, and the Temple Mountare not “sacred places.”

When Jesus met the Samaritanwomen at the well, she attempted toargue about the physical location ofworship. Jesus told her, “Woman, be-lieve me, the hour cometh, when yeshall neither in this mountain, noryet at Jerusalem, worship the Father”(John 4:21). He adds, “…true wor-shippers shall worship the Father inspirit and in truth…” (verse 23).

The Church worships God inspirit in their homes, at work, driv-ing a vehicle, going shopping, or in abuilding which we traditionally call a“church.”

Recently, an article appeared head-lined, “Rare ancient treasures bearingBiblical names discovered inJerusalem’s City of David”:

Archaeologists in Israel have discov-

ered a rare clay seal mark and a

2,600-year-old stone stamp bearing

Biblical names amid the ruins of a

building destroyed by the ancient

Babylonians.

The amazing finds, which date to

the First Temple period, were made

in Jerusalem’s famous City of David.

The artifacts were discovered in the

remains of a structure razed in the

6th century B.C., likely during the

Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem

in 586 B.C., according to experts.

In a statement, Prof. Yuval Gadot

of Tel Aviv University and the Israel

Antiquities Authority, which oversaw

the dig, said charred pottery shards

were found in the building, indicat-

ing that the seal mark and stamp

survived a major fire. Both artifacts

feature ancient Hebrew script.

The tiny 1 cm seal stamp has

been dated to sometime from the

middle of the seventh century to the

start of the sixth century B.C.

Deciphered by Dr. Anat Mendel-

Geberovich of the Hebrew University

of Jerusalem and the Center for the

Study of Ancient Jerusalem, the

stamp features the words:

“(Belonging) to Nathan-Melech,

Servant of the King.” In the second

book of Kings 23:11 “Nathan-

Melech” is described as an official in

the court of King Josiah. The seal is

described as the first archaeological

evidence of the Biblical name.

-www.foxnews.com, 1 April 2019

Although this concerns the Solomontemple, it seems to apply to the sec-ond temple too. Jewish identity wasvirtually erased. In this case, only atiny 1 cm (less than ½ inch) seal con-firms the Jewish presence at the site ofthe first temple.

What is the future? Zephaniah pro-claims: “The Lord will be terrible untothem: for he will famish all the gods ofthe earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all theisles of the heathen” (Zephaniah2:11). This proclaims the end of theidols of the world, and confirms whatRomans 14:11 says: “For it is written,As I live, saith the Lord, every kneeshall bow to me, and every tongueshall confess to God.”

Tina was born in 1924 into aJewish family who lived inBerlin. Her family moved to Eng-land just after Hitler came topower, but before World War 2.Her parents were not observantJews and keen to hide their Jew-ish identity. Tina and her olderbrother were sent to a Christianschool in London, where theywere taught about Jesus. Herparents had no objection to herbaptism into the AnglicanChurch. Already as a teenager, the truth that she heard abouther Messiah led to a personaland living faith.

After studying nursing, Tinadedicated three years to inten-sive Bible training. She contin-ued to work as a general nurseuntil God called her to Israel. She joined a medical missionbased in Haifa, and was active intheir clinic and in the commu-nity. Tina is one of the foundingmembers of Ebenezer Home.

I have known Tina for overtwenty years; we both comefrom England, and in the pasthave enjoyed a proper cup of teatogether, and scones with plentyof raspberry jam and whippedcream. For many years, shefaithfully prayed for our family.

Tina never got married, andshe has no family in Israel; thecongregation and EbenezerHome—we are her family. Wehave the privilege and the re-sponsibility to care for her, asshe cared for many others. Anumber of our residents simplydon’t have families to care forthem; some have been aban-doned by their children becauseof their faith in Jesus the Mes-siah. Others are survivors of theHolocaust or immigrants fromlow-income families.

Tina’s life has been full offriendship, service and prayer. I believe that now in her weak-ness, for as long as her Makerchooses to give her life, she con-tinues to serve His purposes asHis child.
