We would like to congratulate our SJL leadership group. This group, under the guidance of Mrs. Moore has started an initiative whereby they provide an affordable breakfast option for students on a Friday. This has been well-organised and well supported by the school community. As our school is part of the Ambassador program for the Invictus Games we have been able to secure some tickets for our senior students to attend one of the days. This event in which the community embraces our wounded, injured and ill veterans and serving defence personnel and the family and friends who support them, is a wonderful event our school can be part of. 18th-24th August is Book Week. This event is a celebration of books, authors, illustrators, knowledge and reading. The Australian Children’s Book Week theme for 2018 is ‘Find Your Treasure’. Search the library to discover your next great book! Go hunting for your next great read. Looking for a particular type of reading? Look for these stickers on the book spine:

Best of luck finding your treasure! Mr Chakkar

Macquarie University Visit Henry Tang

We started of being given a ‘gift bag’ of sorts that contained like 2 sheets about NASA and a booklet that had stuff about Macquarie Uni and their space/NASA-related subjects. We were also given a timetable that had what we were doing and where it was located. There were other schools that also arrived. From what I recall they were North Sydney Girls and Rose Bay. The first activity we did was a PowerPoint introduction from a Paulo Younse. He is an American scientist/engineer who works for NASA. The PowerPoint talked about the NASA Mars 2020 Rover that is currently being in development at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in California. After that we visited the hall that contained 2 separate activities. I proceeded to the ‘Planetarium’ first. It was basically an air inflated dome that housed a projector powered simulation of the night sky as it appeared from Sydney 2028. We got to see a lot of different stars and galaxies and other space stuff including the solar eclipse that would occur in 2028. The second activity was hosted by a Dr Cormac, whom is a Radio Astronomer, and was a cool little booth that showed off the whats and hows of a radio array. Personally, this was by far the coolest workshop. The third workshop we went to was hosted in one of the Uni’s lecture rooms. We got to use a mini rover that Paulo constructed himself and we learned about his adventures and experiences from working as a scientist. From surveying the frigid Artic to Zero G plane simulations, we looked at really fun and interesting inventions and experiences that he had. The next and final workshop was a lecture about El Nino. Personally, this wasn’t very interesting or engaging but it was nice to learn about the teacher Tom Nolan. We learnt about how El Nino (the warming of sea temperatures) and La Nina (the drop of sea temperatures) and how they affect fish and the oceanic ecosystem.

RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY & HONESTY

Commemorative Service for Private Alexander Robert Saundercock Elective Music students from Year 11 and Year 12 performed the music for this very dignified occasion in honour of an ex-student, Private Alexander Robert Saundercock, who was killed in action during The Great War.

Iris He from Year 11 performed Canon in D by Pachelbel for the Processional music while the Official party entered the hall. Anya Icao and Barry Israel from Year 12 captured the solemnity of the special service with an a cappella duet of the Australian National Anthem, Advance Australia Fair while everyone listened to their charming harmonies. The main musical item was performed by Mary-Pearl Chung from Year 12, who sang and accompanied herself on piano with a very moving version of Autumn Leaves by the Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma.

Featured Guitarists in Individual School Item

After firstly auditioning in school groups and then being further auditioned so as not to exceed numbers allocated to each school, many months of rehearsals followed and very talented musicians represented PHS at the Regional PULSE Concert at the Sydney Opera House on the evening of Thursday 9 August in the Massed Secondary Choir and the Regional String Ensemble. In addition, the Advanced Guitar group, tutored by Mr Secrett, successfully auditioned as featured artists with Tango Argentino composed by Joep Wanders. Thank you to all the students involved for representing PHS and Western Sydney Region so capably and to Ms Piper, Mr Smith and Mr Cavieres for supervision of the students at the rehearsals and performance. Special thanks is also extended to String Tutor Miss Carina Dingwall for her work with PHS string students and to Mr Ben Secrett for further enriching and extending our Advanced Guitar Group to such a standard of excellence. Jenil’s Dream Comes True

Jenil Raval and Mr Secrett I have been in Australia for only 8 years and I have wanted to visit the Opera House for a long while. So, during Term 2, I spoke to Ms Piper and asked her if she would organise an excursion to the Sydney Opera House. A couple of days later, the Advanced Guitar Group, of which I am a member, submitted an audition video of an item for possible performance at the PULSE Concert to be held at the Opera House on 9 August. A few weeks after that, there was some very good news. Tango Argentino, the flamenco piece that Mr Secrett had taught to the Advanced Guitar Group, had successfully auditioned and we were offered a place on the program. It was a wonderful surprise and an absolute privilege as so few schools receive offers to be featured artists at this concert. Suddenly, guitar group practice became very serious as we all worked very hard to master our technique and perform our music from memory. On concert day, we really found out what it was like to be a star on centre stage of the Concert Hall! It meant setting the alarm for 5.00 am and being at the Stage Door of the Opera House for 7.55 am Roll Call with Mr Secrett and Mr Cavieres and then going to our “Green Room” to prepare for our rehearsal at 8.45 am. It was a very professional atmosphere and we were treated very respectfully by the organising staff back stage. Some of us began to feel a little nervous and awestruck by the massive size of the venue as we lined up at the side of the stage for our rehearsal on the enormous stage. I felt so thrilled when all went well at the rehearsal and especially the performance during the second half of the concert when we all played our very best and even managed to bow correctly and receive thunderous applause from the audience. DREAMS SOMETIMES DO COME TRUE!!! Thank you to everyone who supported me and helped me to achieve better than my dream to just visit the Opera House. I actually played guitar at a concert in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House! ~ Jenil Raval (Year 10)

Oz Fashions finds itself in a position where we have to adjust the prices of some items due to the increase in raw materials and labour costs. We have absorbed past increases and take price adjustments very seriously and only apply them at the very lowest rate necessary. Adjusted prices are included on the attached order form and price list and will take effect from 1st September 2018. Oz Fashions appreciates your support and understanding of this matter.

Congratulations to the SRC and PHS students and staff who raised over $1000 for Jeans for Genes Day.
