PRESENTATION ON WEDNESDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2017 Many people are afraid of cancer and don’t know all the facts. To support our students and as part of our PSHE programme at we have invited the Teenage Cancer Trust, to speak to our Year 10 and Year 11 students on Wednesday 22
November about cancer and health.
Teenage Cancer Trust's national ‘Understanding Cancer Together’ presentation is recognised by the government as it raises awareness of cancer which can lead to earlier diagnosis.
Mrs Palmieri, Teacher in Charge of Citizenship & PSHE
A national charity dedicated to helping young people
understand and fight cancer.
A FANTASTIC ACCOMPLISHMENT! Turing 13 have been celebrating a charitable achievement of one of their tutees. Melissa Wing along with some other Lord Grey students completed a sponsored 5k run for the Meningitis Research Foundation. Melissa completed the run in just 36 minutes and raised over £100.00 for the charity. Well done Melissa for this amazing result! Melissa earns herself a Star Reward for her charitable efforts. PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING
On Thursday evening last week, debating teams from many Sixth Form Schools across Milton Keynes gathered at Walton High for a Debating Competition. The competition was fierce and the local MP, Iain Stewart agreed with all those in the audience that the standard of debating this year was the highest he had seen since inaugurating these events a few years ago. Our team of Nathan Smith and Sonia Asryan had the disadvantage of being first, to go in on the programme, where those going later get a better idea of what the judges were looking for and the ‘tricks of the trade’. In the end we were beaten by Shenley Brooke End Sixth Form, but all the judges commented on how well Nathan and Sonia had done. They praised their poise, research and presentation as well as their questioning of the opposition’s speakers, and their responses to questions of them. Well done Sonia and Nathan.
The debate program was very beneficial for me as it taught me new skills and allowed me to discuss a topic I would never have considered before in a professional environment. I would definitely recommend participating in this scheme if you have the opportunity as it can teach you so much about public speaking and increase your confidence. Nathan Smith
Partaking in the MK debate team was a great opportunity which has taught me a plethora of skills varying from public speaking to organisation. Being able to meet Iain Stewart, who w a s p r e s e n t m a d e t h e experience more fun and was definitely a motivational drive for me. The whole process was intellectually stimulating and I would be more than happy to do it again if the opportunity ever arises. Sonia Asryan

Dan Pearce joined NHBC in 2010 and has been Executive Business Manager, providing
overall project management for corporate projects, business plans and strategies, since
2014. He recently volunteered for his first Career WorkOut session with Year 11 students
(aged 15-16) at Lord Grey School.
“I wanted to help people who may be struggling to make decisions about their futures, as I
was at their age,” he said. “The students asked me questions about my job and career,
qualifications, what educational path I took and advice on job applications, interview
techniques and job options. I came away feeling positive and encouraged.
The students I spoke with had good ideas about what they could do next, even if they were
unsure. Most were engaged and attentive and asked good questions. Some weren’t quite
so interested but, by focusing the discussion and drawing them to ask questions, they did
then participate and hopefully get something out of it.
It was a very self-reflective process that makes you revisit your school days, the uncertainty,
your hopes and dreams from those days and then think about how you went from then to
now. What I took away, and hopefully also got across to the students, was that whether you
know what you want to do for a career when you are 15 or not, you can get to a pretty good
place with a pretty good job no matter what happens. It also made me think more positively
about the job I do, something that is hard to do when you’re in the midst of deadlines and
deliverables.”

NEWS FROM TURING Autumn Term is half-way through and first holidays of the season done. So much has happened and we have been an incredibly busy bunch!
Turing 13 and Turing 08 have both won the awards for the best Tutor Group Photo Shoot and chocolates make their way to be enjoyed amongst you all! Super Snaps!
The Summer Project Competition was particularly difficult to judge, as the entrees were so good. After much deliberation the winners were announced in assembly.
Sophie Ward
Tiffany Ansong
Ella Sharples.
Sophie created and photographed the most delicious Healthy Eating Food Programme, whilst Tiffany crafted (including Plasticine accessories) a room setting and Ella Sharples wrote a drama script which was very explicit. Amazing effort girls - prizes coming your way.
More celebrations, Phoebe Stewart, Year 9 answered the call to design a logo for Turing House. Phoebe not only drew her idea, but also made a Mobile Phone Holder for Mrs Wasway using a CAD drawing.
Then finally, Turing House needed a House Charity, to support. The criteria was for it to be a local organisation which benefits the children of Milton Keynes. Amber Fensome, in Year 7 brought to our attention Ride High. This horse riding charity works with disadvantaged children in the local area who need to build confidence and feel success, by learning to ride and care for the equine creatures. We will bring you more details in forthcoming editions.
All of our wonderful winners won a Turing House lunch and on 18 October 2017 were presented with Golden Tickets. No queues or money required, service all the way! The photo is showing our feast!
Well done Turing, we are making our presence known and we are super proud of each of you.
Here's to us and celebrating our success.

European Day of Languages On Tuesday 26 September the Languages Faculty hosted the European Day of Languages. We had food from different countries such as Italy, Spain, Germany, China and England. The students tried various food and they thought it was lovely. We had anthems playing in the background and a PowerPoint showing why languages are so important. Also, The Henry Allen Trust came into the school to raise money by doing an international themed cake sale. Plus the sold merchandise e.g. wristbands and lanyards. It was a huge success and we managed to raise £55.07. It was a fantastic day and I hope we can do the same next year. Just before half term, on 22 September, the Performing Arts team welcomed thirteen fabulous acts to the stage for our annual Talent Show. Among singers and musicians, this year we also had card tricks, cheerleading, sign language and a diablo act to enjoy. The show was compered by Year 12 Drama students, Thomas Capel and Molly McCarthy, who did a fantastic job. We have already asked them to continue as our comperes for Christmas and Summer assemblies, as well as the Performing Arts Showcase in the spring term. Our thirteen finalists spanned from Year 7 to Year 11, and were chosen by student judges at the auditions, two weeks before the show. They included: Year 7:
Lily Errington and Faith Essilfie – singing and dancing
AJ Gates – singing and signing
Nojus Rugalis – playing his own composition on piano
Neitonas Stekanas – diablo tricks
Isaac Yogo – playing a mash-up of well-known pop songs on piano
Year 8:
Ollie Simpson – playing a drum Solo Year 9:
Blake Tibble – performing card tricks
Year 10:
Sophie Mollison – singing Year 11:
Rosie Ballarin - singing
Aletha Bowen - singing
Ben Dodds - rapping his own composition
Lucas Greenwood - performing guitar and vocals for his own song
Plus LG Knights Cheerleaders; Maisie Rolfe, Erin Rolfe, Eden Reeve, Rahema Hussain and Charlotte Dorrington from Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10. Our judges for the night included Enigma Assistant Head of House, Judith Kirby, and Performing Arts’ link Governor, Lisa Rodriguez, who have come on board as judges for us for many years and are always impressed with the talent shown by our students. We also welcomed Paula Diamond, Director of Milton Keynes’ Diamond Theatre School for 25 years, who joined us as a judge for the first-time last year and enjoyed the night so much, she couldn’t wait to come again this year. Our fourth judge this year was celebrity guest, Andy West; award winning BBC journalist, ex-producer of Radio Two’s Jeremy
Vine Show and 2016 Big Brother Finalist. He stated that, after seeing the talent our students possess, he really hopes they “hold on to their passion and their ambitions, because they clearly have the talent to go far.” Alongside our student performances, we also enjoyed post-interval act, Team Turing. Mrs Wasway and Miss Brown, Head and Assistant Head of the new Turing House, entertained us with a comedy tap routine to Love and Marriage, by Frank Sinatra. We want to thank them for being such great sports and we hope they will return to the stage to show off more staff talent next year! THE RESULTS In Third Place, and winning an escape room experience for up to six people, was Ollie Simpson, whose drum solo to Wipeout by Surfaris received a massive cheer from the audience. In Second Place, and winning an escape room experience for up to eight people, was Blake Tibble – whose showmanship and ‘comedy duo’ with Andy West really entertained everyone watching. The Audience Winner this year was Rosie Ballarin, who also really wowed the judges with her soulful and powerful rendition of Queen Latifah’s I Know Where I’ve Been. Rosie’s prize was to record the song at a local professional recording studio, something she really enjoyed. The Judges Winner was Lucas Greenwood, who not only impressed with his vocal ability, but also his guitar playing and own lyrics. Lucas has won a three hour recording session at The Stables, courtesy of Notivate, and we look forward to hearing the results of this. Special thanks go to the Performing Arts Team for all their hard work that went into making Talent Show a success; particularly technician Arran Johnson, training Drama teacher Kieron Hansell and Head of Music, Ruth Maxwell running the sound and lights for the rehearsals and show. We wold also like to thank the local businesses who donated our prizes, Escaper MK, Pennyland Studio and Notivate at The Stables Theatre. Well done to everyone involved and congratulations to the winners Maria Edwards Head of Performing Arts Faculty

Would you like to join our governing body?
Parent Governor Vacancy Do you enjoy a challenge?
If YES, please get in touch we would love to hear from you!
Successful schools need effective governing bodies. Skills learnt in the workplace can add
real value to governing bodies. School governors are people who wish to make a positive
contribution to children’s education. Governors are volunteers who work with our staff
to ensure all students get the best education. We do benefit from having governors who
represent all aspects of the local community and this is where you could fit in. In
addition, you will be part of a team and gain an enormous sense of satisfaction.
Would you consider joining our governing body and giving us some of your experiences?
Were you a governor at your child’s previous school?
Being a school governor has its rewards, and is an important contribution to education.
No previous experience required, you will be given access to training.
Interested?
Please complete the application form
on the following page.

Lord Grey School, like all schools, has a Governing Body. Governors represent parents, staff, local government, local industry, business and the community. The Governing Body’s main role is to work in partnership with the Headteacher and staff to develop the school strategically and evaluate its work. Readers will be interested in the overall composition of the Governing Body which is as follows:
LA Governors appointed by Milton Keynes Council
Parent Governors, elected by parents/carers
Staff Governors, including the Headteacher
Partnership Governors appointed by the Governing Body.
Parent Governor Elections Parents play an important role in the running of the school and we strongly urge you to consider standing for election yourself or nominating someone else who is interested. The questions and answers below give you more information. You may nominate yourself. Please return your Nomination Form to Dean Johnson, Director of Business, by 12 noon on 12 November 2017 via Reception. The school has an equal opportunities policy and the Governing Body is keen to have all sections of our community represented. We also wish to have a wide range of skills and professions on our Governing Body. Parent Governor Q1 Am I eligible if I am not the student’s parent? A1 Yes, if you are the legal guardian of a student who attends
Lord Grey School. Q2 May I remain a Parent Governor once my child has left the
school? A2 Yes, if you wish to, until your four year term of office
expires. You may also resign at any time during your term of office.
Q3 What would I have to do as a governor? A3 You would be expected to:
A. attend one full Governing Body meeting per term at the school;
B. undertake some special tasks, such as joining a committee or panel and linking to a class or subject; C. attend some of the school functions; D. do a lot of reading and learn about our school so you can
contribute to policy making and the evaluation of the school.
Q4 Will there be an election? A4 If there is one parent nominated, they will be elected
unopposed, but if there are two or more candidates for the one vacancy, a ballot will be held. If this is necessary, a further notice will appear in the Newsletter about the arrangements.
All parents whose child/children attend this school will be entitled to vote in the ballot and voting will be on the basis of one vote per parent/carer per place available. Before a ballot takes place, we will circulate information from the candidates to all parents. If it proves impossible to fill the vacancy, the Governing Body has the right to appoint alternative governors in order to fill the required number of Parent Governor places on the Governing Body. A person will be disqualified from election as a Parent Governors if she/he is:
An elected member of the Local Authority
Paid to work in school for more than 500 hours in a school
year.
There are a number of other circumstances in which an individual is
disqualified from being a governor, which include bankruptcy and
criminal conviction. All newly appointed or elected governors will be
checked against List 99, which details those people who are
prohibited from working with children or young people. Proof of
identity will be required. Should you require further information on
disqualification clauses, please contact Governors Support on 01908
253614. The school also carries out DBS checks on its governors.
Or you can join as a co-opted governor. This is anyone from the
community who has an interest in educational progress at Lord
Grey School.
If you would like more information, please contact Dean Johnson
on 01908 626116.

We are always looking at ways to help you achieve
your full potential. Lord Grey has subscribed to SAM
Learning which is an online learning package which
has materials for SATS, GCSEs and A Levels. The
resources available on the system are very good, and
have the advantage that they can be accessed
anywhere where there is an INTERNET connection, at
home, in the LRC, public libraries as well as in lessons.
Independent research shows that provided students
use the materials for more than 10 hours in total then
it will boost SAT and GCSE grades.
So how do you get started?
The Web address is: www.samlearning.com
Every student has a unique user ID.
To discover yours follow these simple instructions!
CENTRE ID: MK3LG
USER ID: your date of birth followed by your two initials
e.g. the user ID for DAVID JONES, born on the 1 August
1985 would be 010885DJ
PASSWORD: This is the same as your USER ID but you
can change this once you have logged on for the first
time.
The system is not meant to substitute the work that you
do in class with your teacher, or homework that has
been set by your teachers. It is meant to complement
and enhance your learning and revision skills—by
completing exam style questions you will get better at
exams and having to mark your own work will help you
understand exactly what the examiners want in an
answer.
