The PositionThis is the experienced entry-level Park Landscape Maintenance Worker classification. Under supervision and through training and experience, employees in this classification are assigned increasingly more responsible duties. Employees are assigned to various crews, including irrigation, turf maintenance, playground equipment, spraying, street planters, park planters and special projects. Once trained, passing all competency tests required of the classification, employees are eligible to advance to the Park Landscape Maintenance Worker II classification.

Receives general supervision from Park Maintenance Supervisor. Works under the direction of a Lead Park Maintenance Worker. Exercises no supervisory responsibilities over other workers. May direct the work of temporary, part-time employees.

• Prunes and trims trees, shrubs, and ground cover using gas powered and hand tools such as loppers, chain saw, gas trimmer; disposes of trimmed materials using a brush chipper.

• Performs turf maintenance including mowing and edging turf using a riding mower and walk-behind mower, edger, string line trimmer; cleans mowed areas using gas operated blower.

• Weed areas using hoe, string trimmer, hand trimmer.

• Cleans playground areas; assembles, inspects, repairs and installs playground equipment; removes graffiti; and cleans walkways.

• Maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment including making routine mechanical repairs, blade sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and greasing.

• Removes and replants trees and shrubs using staking and tying methods; grinds stumps.

• Drives and operates vehicles such as trucks and tractors. Trailers large mowers and equipment on public streets.

• Assists in installing, checking, repairing, and inspecting irrigation systems and programming controllers.

• Fertilizes turf and landscaped areas such as parks and grounds, using tractor spreader and walk-behind spreader.

• Renovates turf and infield by aerating, reseeding, grading, and laying down sod.

• Picks up litter in parks and landscaped areas; dumps garbage cans.

• Repairs, fabricates and installs structures such as bleachers, backstops, benches, fences and concrete walkways, curbs, and slabs.

• Performs other maintenance and operations duties in the department as necessary.

Typical Duties

THE IDEAL CANDIDATEWill possess knowledge of:• Pruning practices: using hand and power tools to ensure

healthy and uniform plant growth. Turf maintenance, including mowing, edging, aerating, watering, and fertilizing.

• Planting procedures, including proper hole width and depth, stake and tie placement, and initial water and fertilizer needs.

• Plant care, including requirements for water and nutrients.

• Basic irrigation system components, including installation, adjustment, and repair procedures.

Will have the skills and abilities:• Read and understand materials such as job instructions,

equipment manuals, safety manuals, blueprints, schematics, and maps.

• Use basic math, including whole numbers and fractions, to calculate amounts of fluids to add to equipment and amounts of fertilizers to apply.

• Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, including basic troubleshooting to identify and correct minor mechanical and electrical malfunctions.

• Safely and properly operate large trucks, dump trucks, loaders, mowers, aerial towers, and tractors, including backing and dumping.

• Communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.

• Bend, reach, twist, and stoop; stand and walk for extended periods of time.

• Independently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds and up to 95 pounds with assistance.

Experience:A typical qualifying background would be graduation from high school, or GED equivalent and one year of experience performing relevant duties.License:• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is

required.• Possession of California Qualified Applications

Certificate (QAC) with Landscape Maintenance (Category B) for pesticide application within one year of employment.
