ave you ever had a friend call and ask for a lift to the store because their car is in the shop for

repairs? Or how about your neighbor comes over and asks to borrow your lawn mower to mow their lawn because theirs just mysteriously quit working and their family reunion guests begin arriving in 2 hours. We’ve all been in this position in our lives more times than we can count and we know how it feels to be on the giving side and the receiving side of this situation.

So how does this relate to the “price of rice in China”, or more directly, the parks, trails, open spaces, pools, recreation centers, arts, culture, and recreation programs we enjoy in the City of Reno? The existing Volunteers and City staff who already work to provide the beautiful facilities and enjoyable programs for the citizens of Reno are requesting help from citizens in our community to volunteer time, their talents or donations to maintain what you value so much.

We have lots of options for you to choose from; folding brochures, teaching your favorite hobby, assisting with trail maintenance, keeping the flower baskets blooming, or helping children stay active and healthy. There are many options to choose from that will fit your needs and lifestyle. So all we ask is …..Just Say Yes! For more information contact April Wolfe at 333-7765.

Reno’s two recreation centers are great facilities for fitness and exercise activity. At the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center patrons have access to a weight room fully equipped with dumbbell and barbell weight equipment, cable resistance machines, a universal machine, floor mats and Swiss balls.

The cardio room is filled with treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair steppers, and upright & recumbent bicycles. EMNECC also has locker rooms, a full-sized gymnasium, a four-lane lap pool and paved pathways through the adjacent Dick Taylor Park that provide variety to any workout routine.

The Neil Road Recreation Center has a circuit training room that uses both hydraulic resistance equipment and calisthenics to provide a full-body workout. Patrons can also use the gymnasium for activities like volleyball, basketball and pickle ball. Miguel Ribera Park makes other activities possible including strolling, soccer, and more.

Fees to use the facility vary and are based on the amenities one plans to use. Stop by one of these facilities for a tour and to discuss with staff which fees apply to you.

Water is a great environment for exercise. Buoyancy takes the impact off of leg joints allowing exercises to improve muscular strength, balance and fitness levels. Get high-impact results from a low-impact workout. No swimming skills are required.

Conversation Café is a lively, hosted, drop-in conversation among diverse people about our feelings, thoughts and actions in this complex-changing world. The simple structure of Conversation Café and the spirit of respect, curiosity and warm-welcome help people shift from small talk to BIG talk. Cafés are unique because they foster inquiry rather than debate – minds and hearts are both involved. Come in and share coffee, refreshments and ideas as we explore a different topic each week. NRRC, Tuesdays at 10 a.m. There is a $0.50 drop in fee.

ForestryOur urban forest encompasses trees and vegetation on both public and private property within the city limits. A dedicated staff of arborists and a professional Urban Forester maintain over 24,000 publicly owned trees in city parks and along public streets. Their work is vital to both public safety and tree preservation.

Reno’s arborists are concerned about trees that appear to be dead, dying, or diseased, that have large broken limbs, low limbs, or limbs blocking traffic signs, signals or intersection sight lines. To report concerns about trees causing a public hazard call Reno Direct at 334-INFO.

Firewood SalesReno Urban Forestry sells firewood to the general public during the months of September and March. The wood yard located at 190 Telegraph is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for wood cutting. The wood is in log form and requires people to saw their own rounds for splitting. The cost is $75 per cord. Customers must first sign a waiver of liability and pay in advance at the Park Maintenance Office, 2055 Idlewild Drive. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday, excluding holidays. Payment by cash or check only.

Phone Book Recycling In December and January, the city of Reno will participate in the Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful phone book recycling campaign. Bring your out of date phone books to the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, Neil Road Recreation Center or Northwest Pool. Visit www.ktmb.org for more information.

Christmas Tree RecyclingFrom Dec. 26 - Jan. 16, your Christmas tree can be recycled into mulch for use in parks and landscapes. Bring them to Bartley Ranch Regional Park, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park or Shadow Mountain Sports Complex between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A $3 donation is requested but not required. Volunteers are needed to support this program. Please call KEEP TRUCKEE MEADOWS BEAUTIFUL at 851-5185.

OutdoorsThe Whitewater Park has grown into a cultural icon, an essential ingredient of Downtown that is the envy of cities across the country. Opened in 2004, the half-mile Whitewater Park features five drop pools over 1400 feet in the north channel; six pools over 1200 feet in the south channel. The north and south channels are created by Wingfield Park, a grassy island park with an amphitheater and facilities for concerts, festivals, picnics, outdoor sports and recreation. Visitors to the park will commonly see people using kayaks, canoes, rafts, or inner tubes pass through the park any time of the year. Kayak, raft and tube rentals are available by local concessionaires. As with all river systems, safety precautions should be exercised (i.e. use of personal flotation devices). No lifeguard on duty. Call us at 334-2414 for more information.

Echo Loder School Field RenovationThe City recently completed a project using Community Development Block Grant funds to improve the playing fields and install a jogging track, shade shelter and seating for use by soccer leagues, the school and neighbors. The $240,000 project included installation of a new irrigation system to replace an antiquated and inefficient system in place for 40 years. The solar powered system is now linked to the Parks Division’s central irrigation control system, meeting the goal of the City’s Water Management Plan. The shade shelter and tables will provide a site for an outdoor learning environment for the school’s use. The project also included new sidewalks, pedestrian crosswalks and security fencing to improve access and security for the school.

White Fir TrailheadWith a $150,000 grant from the Nevada Recreational Trails Program, the City recently installed a new parking lot at White Fir Drive, adjacent to the Tom Cooke Trail. This site, situated on the south side of the Truckee River across from Patagonia, has been a popular location for hikers and mountain bikers to access the Steamboat Ditch trail and US Forest Service lands on the north slope of the Mt. Rose wilderness. In the past, visitors parked on White Fir Drive, which wasn’t designed for in this area for on-street parking. The new parking lot includes 10 parking spaces and is handicap accessible.

Dick Taylor Park – Universal Accessible PlaygroundThe City partnered with the Junior League of Reno to replace much of the old playground equipment at Dick Taylor Park, located adjacent to the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, with new play systems specifically designed to be usable by children of all physical, emotional and mental abilities. The new playground includes five different equipment groups, including typical play structures with components for children aged 2-5 and 5-12, adaptive fitness equipment, climbing equipment and swings. The Junior League of Reno raised $150,000 for the project while the City committed $100,000 of Community Development Block Grant funds. When the playground opens this fall, it will be the only one of its kind in the Truckee Meadows.
