Bring It Brekky

Our next “Bring it Brekky” is coming up, and we’d love you to come enjoy breakfast with us. When: Thur 10th May, 9:00-9:30am Where: Staffroom Who: All welcome Please bring something you would enjoy for breakfast to share (or just bring yourselves)!

Important Information about BPay

Thank you to our families who are using our BPay payment option. This is our preferred method of payment for all curriculum related activities – excursions, incursions, camps, swimming and additional optional extras like ICAS, Solar Challenge, etc. Just a reminder that PFA fundraising activities unfortunately cannot be paid by BPay. If you have a few activities that need to be paid you can do this in one transaction – there is no need to do separate BPay payments. Please do remember to email the office ([email protected]) what you have paid so that your account can be allocated correctly. If this is not done, then we will allocate items ourselves with what we think needs to be paid. Also please tick the BPAY option on the permission notice. Please remember that BPay payments can take up to five days to reach our bank account, so please allow for this when making payments. Did you know that you can pay money on your account to be left in credit to pay for all the excursions/incursions during the year? The school allows approximately $100 per student for excursions/incursions, so you are welcome to pay some money up front and this money in credit will be allocated to the excursion/incursion when we receive your permission notice. Just tick the box on the form that say “I will use the credit on my account for this event”. Please contact the office if you have misplaced your BPay code and reference number. News from our Parkhill Garden A recent article in 'The Age' (Saturday April 28th) highlighted the need for all of us, but especially children, to experience nature in an active way.

In his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods, American journalist Richard Louv coined the term "nature deficit disorder” to describe humanity's growing separation from nature. Louv states: "Technology now dominates almost every aspect of our lives. This is not in itself the enemy, but our lack of balance is lethal.”

Exposure to the natural world is especially important for children, and he notes "Studies strongly suggest that time in nature can help reduce the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, calm kids and help them focus. Schools with nature learning areas appear to help children do better academically. There are some indications that natural play spaces can reduce bullying and be a buffer to child obesity....”

I know this is true because each Y3/4 student spends his/her time in the garden with an abundance of energy and an enthusiasm to learn and discover the mysteries of nature. Being in the garden learning environment is a joy and crucial to the learning needs of our students. We are so lucky to have our wonderful Parkhill garden as a place of learning and solace.

Our Latest Recipe

The students enjoyed the surprising combination of fruit and vegetables. Be careful not to over mix the mixture or the muffins will be tough.

Apple and Zucchini Muffins These muffins are delicious and healthy! Make a batch in secret and feed them to the kids. Just don't tell them

you have hidden zucchini in there! prep: 0:10 | cook 0:20

Ingredients 2 cups (300g) self-raising flour

1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon

2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup (125ml) vegetable oil

1 tsp vanilla essence 1 cup apple, peeled and grated

1 cup zucchini, peeled and grated

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Spray a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray. 2. In a bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. 3. In a separate bowl, mix the eggs, oil, vanilla, apple and zucchini. 4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and use a spatula to turn the mixture until all ingredients

are just moist. 5. Spoon mixture evenly into muffin tin and bake for 20-25 minutes. Anne McGregor Y3/4 Garden Coordinator

Attitudes to School Survey 2018

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

Students from Y4 to Y6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School Survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 30 April to Friday 18 May. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of Term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.

Last year we used the survey results to help provide direction for our Annual Implementation Plan, which drives our learning at school this year. It is a valued source of information, and a way for us to gain insight into student experience.

If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx Michelle Smith Acting Assistant Principal

Mighty Migration

Australia has a rich migration history and last Thursday Y6 were privileged to hear four personal stories of migration from members of our school community. The stories ranged from child migrants traveling by boat from Europe after the Second World War to migration forced by persecution in Iran. With each story came a wealth of information about push and pull factors, the emotional impact and the challenges experienced by immigrants. Many thanks to Agatha, Houman, Didi and Kay for sharing their very dynamic stories with us and allowing us to develop a more personal connection with this complex process.
