Q. When should I volley behind my opponent and when should I vol-

ley into the open court?

You must keep your opponent guessing at all times. When you’re

close to the net, volley into the open court. When farther away from

the net-especially on your first volley, volley behind your opponent.

If your opponent is very fast, you should volley him/her more fre-

quently. Use the open court more often against a slower opponent.

Q. How do you neutralize a strong first serve?

The first step is to set up for your return a few feet behind the base-

line so you have time to react to the serve. Hit a high, deep return

that travels 8-10’ above the net and lands a few feet from the base-

line. This forces the server to take 5-6 steps backward & hit the ball

from behind the doubles alley. You should move 3-4 steps forward &

toward the center of the court, you have the superior court position.

Be ready for a deep return & take it on the rise to the opposite cor-

ner. Your 2 shots create an X pattern& put the server on the run

while you control the center of the court & dictate the rally.

Wimbledon courts

are 100% perennial

rye grass, mowed

each day to 1/3”.

One ton of grass

seed is used every

year.3,000 gallons of

water will be use

during the tour-

nament.

THE DROP SHOT: THE UNDERRATED WEAPON

What is a Perfect Drop Shot? A perfect drop shot goes over the net with a very small

margin for error. To be effective, the ball must have reverse under-spin and bounce at

least 2 times before reaching the service line. Your Opponent has fantastic ground-

stroke's but fears coming to the net. This is the exact time to give them a different look

and force them out of their comfort zone. Having a balance and a variety of shots, in-

cluding touch and power, allow you to keep your opponent’s mind wondering what you

will do next.

When and Why? Powerful groundstroke's often force your opponent to fall back several

feet behind the baseline. This is the optimal time to hit a drop shot, which then keeps the

opponent honest because if they move back too much they will not be able to retrieve

the drop shot.

It is not enough to just work your opponent side to side to create open court opportuni-

ties. Learning to work deep and short combinations can add another dimension to your

game.

In today’s game, you must have a drop shot. Just as a quarterback uses different forma-

tions and plays to confuse opponents, the drop shot does the same in tennis.
