Jesus is Lord!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As you know, our parish is part of a Cohort of parishes that include St. Agnes - OLPH in Atlantic Highlands/Highlands, St. Catherine in North Middletown and St. Ann in Keansburg. Over the recent years we have been offering Cohort Penance Services among other events that have met with shared success for our parishes. The Cohort is pleased to announce that we will host a joint Parish Mission on "Building up your Family” presented by Michael and Alicia Hernon of messyfamilyproject.org from Sunday, October 6 to Wednesday, October 9. Each Cohort Parish is hosting one of the nights.
The Parish Mission will begin with a light dinner and will be served at 6:30 pm- 7:15 pm followed by a presentation by Michael and Alicia Hernon in the hosting parish church at 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm.
• Sunday, Oct 6th St. Catherine Laboure, North Middletown.
• Monday, Oct 7th St. Agnes, Atlantic Highlands
• Tuesday, Oct 8th St. Mary, Middletown
• Wednesday Oct 9th St. Ann, Keansburg
Please help spread the word. This mission will be the first time where the Cohort will come together on such a large scale, so we hope that there will be a good turn-out.
The Saint Mary’s Fall Country Fair was amazing! There was such a wonderful sense of community as people came together to enjoy the food, fun and fellowship. It was a great testimony to our parish “family” here at Saint Mary’s. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the Country Fair a success. I would like to say a special thank you to the chairpersons of the Fair, Hank and Mimi Pekarsky. The Fall Country Fair would not have been possible without you. May the Good Lord bless abundantly all who worked at the Fair.
This Friday, October 4th, we will celebrate the First Friday Healing Mass. I know that each person who comes to the Mass will receive some kind of blessing. Many who have come to past Healing Masses have received dramatic healings from Our Lord Jesus as a result of their participation in the Mass. These include physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and relational healings. Of course healing is available at every celebration of the Eucharist, especially when we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the sacrament - “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” Songs of praise and worship will begin at 7:00pm this Friday, followed by Holy Mass at 7:30pm.
For all the parish families with pets, there will be a “Blessing of the Animals” on Friday, October 4th, the Feast of Saint Francis, at 5:00pm in the front of Mary, Mother of God Church. Bring your pet for a special blessing.
Have a blessed week!
In Jesus and Mary,
Father Jeff Kegley Pastor

A communiqué released by the Holy See’s Press Office on Saturday states that Pope Francis invites “all the faithful of all the world, to pray the Holy Rosary every day” during the Marian month of October.
The following is the full text of a comuniqué released on Saturday by the Holy See's Press Office regarding an invitation extended by Pope Francis to all the faithful to join in praying the Rosary during the month of October: Pope Francis' invitation The Holy Father has decided to invite all the faithful, of all the world, to pray the Holy Rosary every day, during the entire Marian month of October, and thus to join in communion and in penitence, as the people of God, in asking the Holy Mother of God and Saint Michael Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other. In recent days, before his departure for the Baltic States, the Holy Father met with Fr. Fréderic Fornos, S.J., international director of the World Network of Prayer for the Pope, and asked him to spread this appeal to all the faithful throughout the world, inviting them to conclude the recitation of the Rosary with the ancient invocation “Sub Tuum Praesidium”, and with the prayer to Saint Michael Archangel that he protect us and help us in the struggle against evil (cf. Revelation 12, 7-12). The prayer – the Pontiff affirmed a few days ago, on 11 September, in a homily at Santa Marta, citing the first book of Job – is the weapon against the Great Accuser who “goes around the world seeking to accuse”. Only prayer can defeat him. The Russian mystics and the great saints of all the traditions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God pronouncing the invocation “Sub Tuum Praesidium”. The invocation “Sub Tuum Praesidium” is recited as follows: We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. With this request for intercession the Holy Father asks the faithful of all the world to pray that the Holy Mother of God place the Church beneath her protective mantle: to preserve her from the attacks by the devil, the great accuser, and at the same time to make her more aware of the faults, the errors and the abuses committed in the present and in the past, and committed to combating without any hesitation, so that evil may not prevail. The Holy Father has also asked that the recitation of the Holy Rosary during the month of October conclude with the prayer written by Leo XIII: Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Pope Francis invites the faithful to pray the Rosary in October

Our Preschool programs are an exciting introduction to school for little ones! Our little schoolhouse is a special part of our campus with a loving, experienced staff of qualified teachers and aides in a low teacher-student ratio. We offer a fun-filled, faith-based curriculum as the first steps in a catholic education for little ones. Through hands-on learning and play, we provide opportunities for each child to grow socially, spiritually and creatively.
For the preschooler beginning the learning experience is a big transition. Saint Mary Preschool provides young learners and their families several options in age appropriate programs as they progress the preschool experience.

State of the Parish
The following is an update on the condition of the parish. St. Mary’s parish has a rich tradition of
providing many programs and services to the parishioners and community. We are fortunate to have
a beautiful campus that houses two schools, two preschools, a chapel and church. A campus of this
size requires constant upkeep, and has been evident over the past two years, sometimes
emergency repairs. The inside of our historical Chapel had many renovations that were completed
by devoted volunteers. We saved over $90,000 because of their dedication and commitment.
However, it became necessary to hire professional contractors to replace the leaking Chapel roof,
pave the parking lot, and restore the exterior molding around our beloved stained-glass windows.
We are currently building a first-floor bathroom to meet the needs of our elderly and handicapped
parishioners that cannot navigate the stairs to the basement facility. Our Mary Mother of God
Church was not without its own issues. We recently replaced all the lights in the Church and in the
outside parking lot that had gone dark. Upon inspection, we were informed that one of the heating
units will require replacement very soon. There are also water leaks in the Church, and the parking
lot is in desperate need of repair.
Completed or in the process of being completed
Lights in Mary, Mother of God $72,865
MMGC & Chapel parking lot lighting $19,665
Chapel Parking lot Paving $74,858
Roof at the Chapel $29,925
Replacing molding at Chapel $84,300
Total $281,613
Estimates on needed repairs - future/present
Heating unit $28,000
Parking lot repairs main Church $80,000
Roof leak main Church $26,000
Bathroom at Chapel $12,000
Emergency repairs (based on last 3 years) $16,000
Total $162,000
Our weekly collections are not sufficient to cover these expenses nor were they used to pay for
completed repairs. We are offering parishioners an opportunity to ADOPT a PEW to pay for these
extraordinary repairs. The pew will be in either Mary, Mother of God Church or in the Chapel. You
will have the option of choosing the pew and its location. The cost is $1,000. You may pay by
installments and upon completion of the payment plan, the plate will be mounted on both ends of the
pew. Thank you for your generosity. God Bless You, Hank Pekarsky - Business Manager
Please consider this opportunity to honor your loved ones while preserving the beauty of our Parish.

RIGHT TO LIFE
Euthanasia is a serious violation of Divine Law...The Gospel of Life, 65
If the terminally ill have a right to escape suffering, why shouldn’t teenagers have a right to escape theirs? After all, isn’t this equal
protection under the law? Moreover, why should people be able to exercise a right only when they can articulate it? Voluntary Euthanasia
automatically introduces non-voluntary euthanasia.
Prayer: Enable us Lord, to bear our suffering in union with you.

We had a wonderful Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 19th! With Memorial Hall full of
parents, eager to hear about all the good things happening at Saint Mary School, the year got off to a great
start. It was evident, right from the beginning that all the hard work put in over the summer by the staff and
parent volunteers is beginning to pay off. With improvements on so many levels, the students have been
walking the halls with smiles which are reflected in the parent comments during normal conversations. As
I’ve mentioned before, those most effective in promoting our school are the parents and their children.
One of the items that need to be presented at BTSN is the School Financial Report. The report used to be a
10-page template, containing bar graphs and pie charts, which no one in the 5th row from the stage or
further, could even begin to see clearly. We decided to make this process simpler and more visible for the
parents by presenting a line-by-line list of revenues and expenses. For the third consecutive year, if
everything goes according to plan, we will have a balanced budget and finish the year “in the black”. This
doesn’t sound like a big deal, but trust me it is given the school’s financial performance for a good many
years. The feedback we received from many parents was both positive and encouraging. Positive in that
they were relieved to hear the school was financially stable (contrary to the “parking lot talk”), and,
encouraging because of the support for the path the school is taking in terms of its academic program and
the community/family feel we’re developing here at SMS.
To further “toot our own horn”, we have been developing a SMS Board where people with children in the
school, and some with none, have stepped up to sit on the Board and commit to assisting in taking SMS into
the future. With Judge Joseph Oxley at the helm, the Board has begun to build subcommittees in the
following areas: Marketing/Public Relations, Advancement/Development, Buildings & Grounds, Catholic
Identity, and Strategic Planning. If you have any skill in these areas and would like to be part of our
amazing future, please reach out to me at the school via my email at [email protected]. We are
looking, as the saying goes, “for a few good people” to lend us their talents for the betterment of Saint Mary
School.
Please continue to pray for our school, its staff, students and families, and our clergy as we strive to provide
an education that is unapologetically Catholic, family centered, caring to others and respectful to all. Please
check our website, Facebook page and the Church bulletin for updates and upcoming events that you can
enjoy with us.
God bless,

It’s great day to be a Saint!
A group of 8th grade SMS Student Ambassadors received a real treat on
Friday, September 20th, when they attended the International Day of Peace
Ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Nine
student ambassadors were accompanied by guidance counselor Katie Anderson,
and head of the Global Leaders Institute at Mater Dei Prep, George Anthony. SMS and MDP students were honored to
attend the Peace Bell Ceremony to kick off the International Day of Peace. This year’s theme was “Climate Action for Peace” and included inspiring speeches
from U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, and world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The student-centered portion of the program gave high school students the
opportunity to present projects they created to the panel. Their innovative concepts were focused on helping counter-act the threat of global climate
change. The students learned first-hand what being an ambassador is all about from the U.N’s very own Ambassadors of Peace. A great time was had by all.
It was a great day to be a Saint!
