From the Pastor’s Computer …

A Blessing for Our Parish Recently, I received a letter from Archbishop Carlson, which he invited me to forward on to you. “Dear Fr. Barthel,

I have great news to share with you. I have accepted the recommendations of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and will award an Ensuring Parish Viability grant of $10,000 to your parish to help with the planned upgrade of your video recording and projection system in the Church. Congratulations on receiving the grant.

The Church of St. Louis has been blessed by the generosity of so many Catholics. I ask that you continue to encourage your parishioners to embrace stewardship as a way of life. Please publish an announcement of this grant to your parishioners. Please thank them as well. It is their commitment to their parish and participating in efforts such as Returning God’s Gifts and the Annual Catholic Appeal that makes these grants and so many others available to help people and parishes in need.” Here is some background on the Grant. Twenty plus years ago, the Archdiocese conducted an archdiocesan-wide capital campaign entitled Returning God’s Gifts, which established a number of endowments for the future needs of the Archdiocese. One of those endowments is called Ensuring Parish Viability. There are two types of grants within this endowment: High Growth Grants, which offers assistance to capital projects for parishes experiencing a high growth in population, and Stability Grants, which provide parishes with some financial assistance for stability and maintenance projects, such as upgrading our video recording capabilities in Church.

Sometimes parishioners wonder if the Archdiocese “knows” that we are a tithing parish and what our annual tithe is. I know that a factor in our receiving the grant was the awareness of the Archbishop that we do tithe as a parish. This grant is also supported by the ACA, and so here’s a little commercial to be generous in making a pledge for the ACA that will be taking place in April. Finally, I would like to offer a word of thanks to our Parish Stewardship Committee, who was the point person for this project, and to Ann Garavaglia, our Business Manager, who gathered all of the data for our grant proposal.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent This weekend’s Gospel about the Woman at the Well, along with next week’s Gospel about the Man Born Blind and the Gospel we will hear in two weeks about Lazarus Being Raised from the Dead together form a unit. Because there is so much meaning on so many different levels in these three Gospels, here is some context for understanding the readings.

As I mentioned in a couple of my Ash Wednesday homilies, the original focus for the season of Lent was the immediate preparation of those who would be initiated at the Easter Vigil, now called the Elect. This immediate preparation was called purification and enlightenment. Later, a second focus was added and that was preparing those who had been away from the Eucharist for celebrating the Eucharist in its fullness. Finally, a third focus was added and that was preparing “the rank and file” members of the Church for the renewal of their Baptismal Promises at the Easter Vigil / on Easter Sunday.

There are three rites included in this period of purification and enlightenment of the Elect, and they are called Scrutinies. The purpose of the Scrutinies is twofold. They are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the Elect. They are also meant to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. Whatever is asked of the Elect to do, the Assembly should be willing to do the same.

The readings of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, and in particular the Gospels of these Sundays, provide the starting point for doing the work of the Scrutinies. In fact, these readings are so important to the formation of those preparing for initiation that these readings must be used in Cycles B & C. (Currently, we are in Cycle A of the Sunday readings.)

Here are some of the elements that connect the three Sundays. Perhaps you may hear about them in a homily.

• The baptismal imagery of water, light and life.

• Some reflective questions being asked: What are my thirsts? Where am I blind? What are some of the chains that bind me / shackle me? Do I believe that Jesus is the answer to those questions?

• More reflective questions: What are some of my own experiences of individual sin? Where do I experience / see social sin? Where do I see / experience cosmic sin?

Our Adoration schedule is: Tuesday

9:00AM - 400PM - Church 4:00-8:00PM - Chapel

Wednesday 9:00AM - 4:00PM - Church 4:00 -7:00PM - Chapel

Thursday 4:00PM - 9:00PM - Chapel

Third Sunday of Lent

“Is the Lord in Our Midst, or Not?” We continue to ponder the presence of the Lord in

our midst. Our Lenten Team reminds us: “While God is always present, we often struggle to have the eyes of our hearts focused on the Divine Presence in the midst of people, places, and events where we don’t normally look for it --- we are asked to seek the Divine Presence within new circumstances.”

We can observe the Season of Lent by observing the following:

• Scripture reminds us of the ways the Lord is with us: for this Third Week of Lent, Isaiah 41:10 tells us that the Lord is in our midst because he says that “we should not fear: he is with us.” • For some minutes before Lenten Masses begin, we will observe quiet time until the Prelude Music is sung. • Our prelude music for the first few weeks of Lent will allow us to turn our thoughts toward the presence of God “in our midst.” • The Lenten decor in the sanctuary accentuates our Lenten focus. • Little Black Books for Lenten Reflection are available at the church doors while the supply lasts. • Practice almsgiving through Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl Project – Rice Bowls can be picked up near the church doors. Prepare for Holy Week by attending our Lenten Prayer Service with Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 PM here at Mary Mother.

Taking Precautionary Steps As you know, seasonal flu is currently making a significant impact in our neighborhoods and throughout the global community. As of 2:00p on Monday, March 2, the Center for Disease Control has estimated that during the current flu season, 8,200 people have died from various strains of influenza and an additional 140,000 people have been hospitalized. There have also been six deaths from the coronavirus so far, and all six deaths occurred in the State of Washington.

On March 2, in order to mitigate the spread of colds, flu, and other contagious illnesses, Archbishop Carlson asked that all parishes of the Archdiocese begin taking the same precautionary measures throughout the Archdiocese. We have been doing many of these precautions since the beginning of February. The following three lists contain what our mass monitors and staff members will continue doing, some changes that will affect our past practices, and a few reminders.

What Our Mass Monitors and Staff Members

Are Being Asked To Do • Sanitize all sacred vessels before and after all Masses (with soap and hot water), because germs may survive on

surfaces up to 24 or more hours.

• Once a week, the Holy Water fonts will be sanitized with the Holy Water being poured out on the ground.

• Encourage good hygiene, including alcohol-based hand sanitizer lotion in restrooms and public areas, and proper cough-and-sneeze etiquette. It is especially important for extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to implement these measures.

• A hand sanitizer will be placed by the Holy Water font in the vestibule.

Changes that will affect our parish practices • The exchange of the sign of peace is to be exchanged as a verbal greeting.

• Holy Communion is encouraged to be received in the hand.

• The reception of the Precious Blood by the faithful via the chalice is suspended.

• When possible, parishioners should try to keep a distance of three feet from the nearest neighbor.

• Specifically for our parish, we will not be holding hands for the praying of the Our Father.

Reminders • Please check in on those who would be considered high risk / most vulnerable such as: our older parishioners who

may be living by themselves, persons with disabilities, teenagers and children.

• For those who are considered high risk, remember that you have the option to participate in the Mass on TV via channels such as EWTN.

• People with a respiratory infection, the flu, a fever or a serious cold are not bound to attend the Sunday Eucharist and are encouraged to stay home.

Parish Nurse’s Corner

A note to volunteer nurses who help with Blood Pressure Screenings: Thank you for your dedication to this program. It’ll soon be time to develop/mail the July2020-June2021 schedule. Please email/call me by April 13th if you need to update email, telephone number and/or your availability. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOU! This program continues successfully because of YOU!

Health Ministry Commission meeting: There will be NO HMC meeting this Tuesday, March 17th. Our annual Welcome/Information meeting is Tuesday, April 21st at 7PM in classroom 3 and 4. All are welcome! This isn’t a “business as usual” meeting. Members will share “what we do” in the Health Ministry Commission, with hope to spark the interest of parishioners to join the commission. We are all so busy and many are unable to attend meetings due to work, family, etc. If this is the case, would you consider being an auxiliary member? When volunteers are needed, we would send an email (or call if preferred) to see if you are able to help. Let either me or Mary Ann Schulte, our current Chairperson, know. Our contact information is on the first page of the bulletin.

Viruses: Information on the corona and influenza viruses are updated by the media, seemingly from minute to minute. Since any information in our parish bulletin is not “out” until nearly the weekend it has been written for, be sure to keep up with valid sources like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. (www.cdc.gov). Also, a timely article is available online: www.livingwellfoundation: “Special Edition- Staying Healthy When Viruses Are in the News.” Thank you to parishioner, Jean Huelsing, RN!

Contemplative Corner 152

Jesus frequently exhorts his followers not to be afraid. The implication is that the spiritual journey can give us cause to fear if we are not anchored in our sure identity in Christ. Contemplative practice helps us discover this sure anchor. Through our practice of welcoming and detachment, we learn that thoughts and emotions come and go. They have nothing to do with the eternal “I”. We have thoughts and emotions, but we are not our thoughts and emotions. This is a key distinction to learn, because life can barrage us with fears, uncertainties, and anxieties. Indeed, it is not at all uncommon for repressed fears and wounds to surface during our practice, as we commit to releasing any attempt to control what comes to our mind. Surfacing pain likely discourages many folks from continuing in contemplative practice (as does the nagging fear that we are somehow “doing it wrong”). But, as we become practiced in releasing such fearfulness into the mercy of God, we recognize the Eternal Presence with us through it all, and we understand God’s promise to the prophet Isaiah: “Do not fear: I am with you” (41:10).

THIRD WEEK OF LENT

Our Rice Bowl Journey this week takes us to Kenya in east central Africa. A drought in

Eastern Africa has left millions in Kenya and neighboring countries facing chronic hunger. Hundreds of thousands of children are acutely malnourished and need urgent nutritional support. Catholic Relief Services is responding with emergency food aid, water, and implementation of programs in agricultural development and vocational training for the most vulnerable people, including those who have been displaced from their homes. Visit www.crsricebowl.org to hear the story of Yvone from Kenya. She learned proper nutrition and hygiene practices to help keep her healthy and in school. Yvone now has a chance to dream and the strength to follow those dreams. Pray and reflect: How can you ensure that young people in your community and across the globe receive proper nutrition?

Lenten Reflection Cards

Each week during Lent, you will find a different meditation card on the pews, regarding our Parish call to silence, before mass. Please reflect on before mass begins and feel free to take one home with you.

Amazing!! You've done it again! The Music Ministry collected $1,770.00 for the St. Patrick Center this year. Thanks to the volunteers who helped collect, and thanks to all of you for your generosity! The money will surely be put to good use at the

Center. God bless you.

Dear Father Barthel, Christ’s Peace! Thank you for your parish community’s generous gift of $4,578 on 2/13/2020, to Kenrick-Glennon Seminary’s Christmas Collection. I offer my sincere gratitude to you and your parish for supporting the formation and education of our seminarians as they prepare for a lifetime of loving ministry as priests.

Be assured of my prayers and the prayers of the entire seminary community. In turn, I ask that you continue to pray for our seminarians and all who serve in the important mission of priestly formation.

In Christ, Father James Mason President-Rector

Women’s Retreat on April 17-19

Ladies come share the good news with happy hearts on a quiet retreat. Fr. Mark Dean and Danielle Harrison will be the presenters. This year’s theme is “The Greatest Love of All”. Bernadette Farrell ‘s song, “Love Goes On”, will guide the reflections. This year will include a guided meditation, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament.

King’s House has beautiful surroundings, a prayerful environment, delicious food, and comfortable rooms. The suggested gift is $185 the actual cost. If you cannot give as much, it is understood. The retreat fee is paid as an anonymous donation by envelope at Sunday Mass. No one is turned away due to finances. We will carpool from Mary, Mother leaving @ 4:15 on Friday the 17th and depart on Sunday after the noon meal.

If you have questions or would like to join us, please call Jane Goeke at 314-704-4160 or Pat Echelmeyer at 314-892-6782.

White House Retreat For Men April 16 – 19

Do you know what God is calling you to do with your life? Have you ever spent any time in silence with the Lord just talking to Him? Do you want to develop your personal relationship with Jesus?

Here’s your invitation! Join the men of our parish on a three day silent retreat at the White House Jesuit Retreat Center located off of Christopher Drive, just minutes away from Mary Mother of the Church. This beautiful setting overlooks the Mississippi River and offers a stress-free, peaceful atmosphere.

The retreat begins the evening of Thursday, April 16 and ends after lunch on Sunday, April 19. Don’t worry if you have never attended a retreat before or don’t think you are “holy enough” to attend. All are welcome! Remember, some of our greatest saints started out as very good sinners!

For more information and to make your reservation, please contact Dave Baranowski at 314-852-3987 or [email protected].

2020 U.S. Census Quick Facts

Census Day 2020 is approaching! By April 1, every home in the U.S. will receive information from the U.S. Census Bureau on how to respond to the U.S. Census. It is important that all Missourians are counted in the census so that our state may have accurate representation in Congress and adequate funding for local hospitals, first responders, and critical social programs. Your responses will be kept anonymous. The MCC has put together a one-page fact sheet on the 2020 U.S. Census that you can find at mocatholic.org. For even more info on what to expect and how to respond, visit www.2020census.gov. MCC doc# 320-32

HOW CAN I RESPOND TO THE CENSUS?

Only one person per household should respond for all who live there. There are three ways to respond:

∗ Online ∗ By Phone ∗ By mail ___________________________________ HOW THE CENSUS BUREAU PROTECT

YOUR INFORMATION. They are bound by Title 13 of the U.S. Code to keep your information totally confidential. Your answers are used only to produce statistics. The government cannot use your information against you.

WHO IS REQUIRED TO RESPOND?

Everyone living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and 5 U.S. territories is required by law to be counted in this Census. __________________________________________________________________________________________

The Census Bureau will not send you unsolicited emails to request your participation in the 2020 Census. Further, they will NEVER ask for: ∗ Your Social Security Number ∗ Your bank acct. or credit card #’s ∗ Money or donations ∗ Contact you on behalf of a

political party.

WHO TO COUNT Tally everyone who is living in your home as of April 1 including friends/family who are living & sleeping there most of the time. If someone is staying in your home on April 1 and has no usual home elsewhere, you should count them in your reply. Be sure to count roommates, young children, newborns, & anyone who is renting a space in your home. These people are often missed in the census.

If someone visits your home to collect a response, verify their identity. Check to make sure they have a valid ID Badge with their photo, a U.S. Dept. of Commerce watermark & expiration date. If you are still not sure, call 800-923-8282 to speak with a local Census Bureau Representative.
