The Prayer for the Day: Loving God, you have made us in your own image,

creating us male and female, and you have consecrated the covenant of marriage so

that in it is signified the spiritual marriage between Christ and his Church: pour your

grace upon all who are called to this holy state, that, keeping their promise of

faithfulness to each other, they may reflect in their lives your love for us all; through

Jesus Christ our Lord: Amen.

Our Diocesan Mission Action Prayer: God of Mission, who alone brings growth

to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to

our actions, and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, in

spiritual commitment to you, and in service to our local community, through

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

READINGS FOR THE DAY

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB CHAPTER 1 VERSE 1 TO

CHAPTER 2 VERSES 1-10:

There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was

blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. One day the

heavenly beings came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came

among them to present himself before the LORD. The LORD said to Satan,

‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the LORD, ‘From going to and fro

on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.’ The LORD said to Satan, ‘Have

you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless

and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his

integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.’ Then

Satan answered the LORD, ‘Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to

save their lives. But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and

he will curse you to your face.’ The LORD said to Satan, ‘Very well, he is in your

power; only spare his life.’ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and

inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. Then his

wife said to him, ‘Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die.’ But

he said to her, ‘You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the

good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?’ In all this Job did not sin with his

lips.

DISCUSSION GROUP/S: We are happy for new groups to

form for discussion and study, and would like to see whether

there may be a few new groups formed in each centre in the

parish. There is a wealth of teaching material and tools to

further our understanding. We could begin by asking “What

book/movie or which person has been most influential to you in your life?”.

Based on the response, small groups can be formed in each centre, which could meet

either once/month or more frequently, at someone's home or at the various

halls. Material for discussion could be varied, from DVD programmes to guest

speakers.

If you have an interest in getting together with others to share ideas on what inter-

ests you in either Christian Education, Spirituality or contemporary Christian Litera-

ture, please contact Henriette Guest (Ph 5445 7608 or email

[email protected]). The disciples asked Jesus “Where are you staying?”, to

which he replied “Come and See”.....the invitation is there for us as well.

Next week we commemorate the life of WILLIAM TYNDALE (Biblical Scholar - d. 1536). This remarkable story of his life and times was presented on a DVD 2 part series on the ABC TV “Compass” which I have recorded, and which we can take a look and discuss over a cuppa at my home (22 Rainbow Park Drive, Mapleton), next Tuesday, 6 October, commencing at 9:30 am. All are invited to come, see and share. Part of our own faith journey will be enriched by learning more about this extraordinary person. Henriette (Ph. 5445 7608).

PSALM 26: We say alternate verses

Give judgement for me, O Lord, for I have lived with integrity;

I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.

Test me, O Lord, and try me; examine my heart and my mind.

For your love is before my eyes; I have walked faithfully with you.

I have not sat with the worthless, nor do I consort with the deceitful.

I have hated the company of evildoers; I will not sit down with the wicked.

I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord, that I may go in procession

round your altar; singing aloud a song of thanksgiving

and recounting all your wonderful deeds.

Lord, I love the house in which you dwell and the place where your glory abides.

Do not sweep me away with sinners, nor my life with those who thirst for blood,

Whose hands are full of evil plots, and their right hand full of bribes.

As for me, I will live with integrity; redeem me, O Lord, and have pity on me.

My foot stands on level ground; in the full assembly I will bless the Lord.

THE EPISTLE IS WRITTEN IN THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS

CHAPTER 1 VERSES 1-4 AND CHAPTER 2 VERSES 5-12:

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but

in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all

things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory

and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful

word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the

Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has

inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world,

about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,

‘What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for

them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have

crowned them with glory and honour, subjecting all things under their feet.’ Now in

subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do

not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little

while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because

of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for

everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in

bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect

through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have

one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,

saying, ‘I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the

congregation I will praise you.’

THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST

MARK CHAPTER 10 BEGINNING AT THE 2ND VERSE:

Some Pharisees came, and to test Jesus they asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to

divorce his wife?’ He answered them, ‘What did Moses command you?’ They

said, ‘Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce

her.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this

commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, “God made them

male and female.” “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and

be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

”So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined

together, let no one separate.’ Then in the house the disciples asked him again

about this matter. Jesus said to them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife and marries

another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and

marries another, she commits adultery.’ People were bringing little children to

him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them.

But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little

children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom

of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God

as a little child will never enter it.’ And he took them up in his arms, laid his

hands on them, and blessed them.

Rev’d Derek Barrett’s Commentary on the readings:

Psalm 26 +Donald Coggan detects a priestly note in this psalmist’s composition. “I will wash

my hands” is the beginning of a priest’s prayer of preparation even today. The Book Exodus and the writings of the prophet Isaiah make it abundantly clear that a priest is to strive after purity, and we pick this up when the priesthood of all believers make themselves ready to celebrate the Eucharist with the Collect for Purity. At first sight there is a touch of self-righteous language and a “Holier than thou” attitude, but we must overlook this in the knowledge that this priestly dignitary is taking his vocation very seriously and he does not wish to offend or insult the Almighty by ignoring any temptation to impurity of thought and action. We who have been called to the priesthood need the prayers which are offered at the time of ordination when the congregation prays, “Give them wisdom and discipline to work faithfully with all the servants of Christ so that the world may come to know the glory and the love of the One they are called to serve.”

Hebrews 1 and 2 Today we begin five Sundays of Hebrews and we will have to wait until the 4th Sunday in Advent for the final reading. What we are hearing read today differs greatly from the letters of Paul both in content and in style. We do not know who wrote it, nor to whom it was addressed. Its writer knows the Greek language and uses it beautifully from start to finish. This comes across in English also. “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son.” These sonorous words ring bells with those of us brought up on the Book of Common Prayer. This is how we knew it was Christmas. This is how Hebrews begins. Our writer knew a great deal about Jesus and he speaks of Him lovingly as “One made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with honour and glory; that He, by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” The main theme of the sacred Christian literature can be expressed in two words, namely, Jesus Lives. The author of today’s epistle elaborates this theme because he knows that Jesus is the key to the total meaning and significance of all people who on earth do dwell.

Mark 10 Many members of our three congregations today are adult women who are or who have been married. Among the men, few are single. All of us will be concerned with the burning topic of today’s Gospel. This is what Judy Hoelzman, a religious education teacher and public relations officer has to say about it: “The discussion in Mark 10 is about more than marriage, it is about women and how Jesus respected them, going against the prevailing Jewish customs of His day He looked on women, not as property but as persons. Divorce often discriminated against women and left them lone and unsupported. Jesus goes deeper than the legalities. He is concerned that marriage should be a life-time commitment. Today when marriages fail despite the best efforts, the partners should know that there is Divine forgiveness. Those who are working hard at their marriage but find it a lonely struggle should take heart that the Lord wishes to strengthen their efforts. Respect for both women and men is a constant in Jesus’ teaching.” The current debate about who can marry who mostly concerns equal opportunity and non-discrimination.
