‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family

Love is not boastful

98. It is important for Christians to show their love by the way they treat family members who are less knowledgeable about the faith, weak or less sure in their convictions. At times the opposite occurs: the supposedly mature believers within the family become unbearable and arrogant. Love, on the other hand, is marked by humility; if we are to understand, forgive and serve others from the heart, our pride has to be healed and our humility must increase. Jesus told his disciples that in a world where power prevails, each tries to dominate the other, but “it shall not be so among you” (Mt 20: 26). The inner logic of Christian love is not about importance and power; rather, “whoever would be first among you must be your slave” (Mt 20: 27). In family life, the logic of domination and competition about who is the most intelligent or powerful destroys love. Saint Peter’s admonition also applies to the family: “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (1 Pet 5: 5). Love is not rude 99. To love is also to be gentle and thoughtful, and this is conveyed by the next word, aschemonei. It indicates that love is not rude or impolite, it is not harsh. Its actions, words and gestures are pleasing and not abrasive or rigid. Love abhors making others suffer. Courtesy “is a school of sensitivity and disinterestedness” which requires a person “to develop his or her mind and feelings, learning how to listen, to speak and, at certain times, to keep quiet”. It is not something that a Christian may accept or reject. As an essential requirement of love, “every human being is bound to live agreeably with those around them”. Every day, “entering into the life of another, even when that person already has a part to play in our life, demands the sensitivity and restraint which can renew trust and respect. Indeed, the deeper love is, the more it calls for respect for the other’s freedom and the ability to wait until the other opens the door to his or her heart”.

Sixth Sunday of Easter: Year B

First Reading: Acts 10: 25-26, 34-35, 44-48 Peter’s acceptance of an invitation to visit a gentile, a non-Jew, in his home and tell him and his household about Jesus is a hugely significant first step in the process that makes us acceptable at this morning’s gathering. ‘God does not have favourites.’

Second Reading: 1 John 4: 7-10 The heart of the Christian message is love - God’s love for us, our call to love God and our neighbour as ourselves for love of God.

Gospel: John 15: 9-17 The emphasis on love we heard in our earlier reading from John’s Letter is reinforced in these words of Jesus in the gospel according to John.

Many people at the time of Jesus related to God as a slave, or as a servant might relate to his or her

master. They wanted to make God happy in order to avoid punishment. There was little to no love in their

relationship with God.

• Is there anyone is your life you view as a master, or an authority figure, lacking love? A bad teacher or

coach, a difficult boss, a mom, dad, aunt, or uncle that acts out of their own woundedness?

• Jesus, in His ministry and saving death, came to show us that God is not a slave driver, but rather a

loving Father, and we are His children.

• While a slave can be beaten into submission, a son or daughter can be raised.

• How do you view God? Is God raising you? Are you a growing member of the family of God? Or is God

your slave master making you do things that you do not want to do?

• How could you be better at relating to God as Father?

• A father is someone we go to for advice. A father is someone who provides for us. Try asking God for

advice. Try thanking God for what He has provided for you. Try approaching God, in faith, asking for what

you need.

• If the authority figures in your life have disappointed you, let God heal that wound and step in as a good

Father.

• Would a slave master die saving his slaves? A good father would and this is exactly what God does for

us; He dies so we might live.
