Moral dilemma, social justice, spirituality and faith are major issues that each individual will face in their lives. When one of these issues happens we feel that it overpowers us and we don’t know what is best. It dominates our way of thinking and troubles our mind. We feel as if we are powerless because whatever move we make it leaves a trail of troubles. There is no win-win situation. Some issues have nothing to do with right or wrong but it may affect our entire future and the quality of life for years. For example, choosing to be a refugee is risky business because it affects everyone in a family; choosing the right person to marry is a great adventure, moving into the unknown future. Discerning your future career or vocation is not easy because it shapes our life what we decide today. The biggest of all is the question of faith because it directs our outlook of life, thoughts and behaviours and the eternal life to come. There are several ways we can deal with conflicts. First, ignoring the problem is not a solution because the problem will not go away. It continues to haunt us. However, avoiding confrontation for the time being may be a good thing because it gives us time to calm down, to think deep and to find the best outcome for the problem. Second, submissive to demands is not recommended because one will live with strain and the unreal relationships. Third, being too rigid can worsen the situation and may permanently harm the relationships. Fourth, if it is possible a compromise is a peaceful way to deal with conflict. It ensures that everyone’s needs are partially met. Each gives up an inch to make the gap smaller and finally fill the differences. These solutions help to satisfy only our emotional needs and the peace of mind. The question of faith in Jesus is not satisfying our emotional needs and the peace of mind but it is eternal life. Having faith is Christ is not the matter of intellectual choice but personal conviction to the faith. The way of the Gospel is the way of life and eternal life to come. It is the openness for change to be more like Jesus, to follow His way. It dictates our daily behaviour living both at home and at work. It is a life of faith and hope in a person of Jesus. In following Jesus there is no midway, no compromise, no giving in a bit but totally committed to Jesus. It is the way of the cross and true commitment to follow but we don’t have to do it alone but do it with the help of God’s grace and with others brethren. SUNDAY 14th August 2016 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Conflict

Conflict happens when a person has more than one idea concurrently running at

the same time and that person must make some choices. It happens within a

person or between individuals or within family members, between parents and

children, amongst the siblings or with other colleagues and friends. Moral

dilemma, social justice, spirituality and faith are major issues that each individual

will face in their lives. When one of these issues happens we feel that it

overpowers us and we don’t know what is best. It dominates our way of thinking

and troubles our mind. We feel as if we are powerless because whatever move

we make it leaves a trail of troubles. There is no win-win situation. Some issues

have nothing to do with right or wrong but it may affect our entire future and

the quality of life for years. For example, choosing to be a refugee is risky

business because it affects everyone in a family; choosing the right person to

marry is a great adventure, moving into the unknown future. Discerning your

future career or vocation is not easy because it shapes our life what we decide

today. The biggest of all is the question of faith because it directs our outlook of

life, thoughts and behaviours and the eternal life to come.

There are several ways we can deal with conflicts. First, ignoring the problem is

not a solution because the problem will not go away. It continues to haunt us.

However, avoiding confrontation for the time being may be a good thing because

it gives us time to calm down, to think deep and to find the best outcome for the

problem. Second, submissive to demands is not recommended because one will

live with strain and the unreal relationships. Third, being too rigid can worsen

the situation and may permanently harm the relationships. Fourth, if it is possible

a compromise is a peaceful way to deal with conflict. It ensures that everyone’s

needs are partially met. Each gives up an inch to make the gap smaller and finally

fill the differences. These solutions help to satisfy only our emotional needs and

the peace of mind. The question of faith in Jesus is not satisfying our emotional

needs and the peace of mind but it is eternal life. Having faith is Christ is not the

matter of intellectual choice but personal conviction to the faith. The way of the

Gospel is the way of life and eternal life to come. It is the openness for change to

be more like Jesus, to follow His way. It dictates our daily behaviour living both

at home and at work. It is a life of faith and hope in a person of Jesus. In following

Jesus there is no midway, no compromise, no giving in a bit but totally

committed to Jesus. It is the way of the cross and true commitment to follow but

ST JOHNS WOOD / THE GAP PARISH MULTICULTURAL MASS AND LUNCH St Johns Wood / The Gap Multicultural Mass and Lunch will be happening on Sunday 21st August 2016, at St Peter Chanel Church and school, 41 Chaprowe Road, The Gap 4061. Mass will be held at 10:00am on this day where we will commence with a Na-tional Flag procession into the church proceeding Fr Tuong. If you wish to carry the flag of your country of origin or that of your ancestors please ar-rive early in order to organise the procession.

Following the 10:00am mass a lunch and entertainment will be held in the St Pe-ter Chanel, Charity Hall until approximately 2:00pm. To make this day successful we would like people to make dishes for this lunch. Parishioners are asked to bring a plate of traditional food to share with others, casseroles, curries, stews etc. and things for sweets would be most appreciated. These dishes can be left in the Parish kitchen before mass on Sunday morning. Please make sure your name is on any containers you leave so that we can return them to you.

This lunch is being held in the SPC School hall (Charity). We will need help to set up on Saturday 20th August commencing at 2:00pm. Ladies and gents and possibly on the Sunday for food serving and preparation. We thank you in antici-pation of your generosity.

Parish Pastoral Council Election

Once again the time has come for some new members for the council.

Nominations (both men and women) for the positions will close on Sunday

18th September, 2016 (6 people required).

The purpose of the pastoral council is to assist, support and guide the

parish priest (Fr. Tuong) in the spiritual and general development of your

parish so that we can go forward in a progressive manner that is expected

of the parishioners and a modern church.

These positions are most rewarding as you get a better insight of the

running of your parish and your Archdioceses. If you would like to

nominate yourself or somebody else (check with them first) please contact

the Parish office or a current council member for more information.

Solemnity of Assumption of Our Lady Monday 15 August the Church celebrates the Solemnity Day of the Assumption of Our Lady. Assumption is a Holy Day of obligation. There will be two masses for the Solemnity:

Instead of 20th Sunday in ordinary time, the 5pm mass at SPC on Sunday 14th August will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption.

There will be a 9am mass on Monday 15th August at SPC followed by a morning tea in the Church Hall.

Holy Days of obligation for Australia and New Zealand are 15 August (Assumption) and 25 December (Christmas). The importance of a day in the liturgical calendar is determined by: Solemnity - feast, memorial. A Holy Day is simply a solemnity celebrated like a Sunday, that is, with obligation.

Share the Dignity No women should suffer the indignity of choosing between eating or buying sanitary items.

Our parish is helping this cause throughout August.

Please contribute to this worthy cause by leaving sanitary items in the box at the back of the

Church. Your help is appreciated.

SPC School News During Catholic Education Week we opened our doors to our Grandparents, welcoming over 250 Grandmas, Pops, Nannas, Pas, Nonas, Nonnos and the likes to our school. The church overflowed during mass and our guests were so appreciative of our student performances, morning tea, guided tours and class visits. Due to the overwhelming positive feedback, we will be looking to make Grandparents Day an annual event!

Our individual student and school wide NAPLAN results for 2016 have arrived and we are very proud of our achievements. A summary of results has been published in this week's School Newsletter, which is available on our school website. Our challenge is to use this data wisely to inform our teaching and learning and continue to maximise our students' progress.

Last week we had an exciting find in our school grounds! We have discovered we have a special neighbour, a 'colony' of Yellow Footed Antechinus. Research by one of our teachers has found that this species of marsupial has not been spotted in the Gap for over 50 years and is somewhat of a threatened species in the area! We have explained to the children that the creatures are living in our grounds because the environment is very healthy and has been looked after. This is in no small part thanks to our children, staff and parents and friends.

We are still accepting Enrolments for 2017, with vacancies available in most year levels. If you know of any family or friends who are moving to the area in the next few months or are still to enrol their child in Prep, please ask them to contact our school office as soon as possible. Is there anyone in your neighbourhood who may not know that we are such a great option for a child ’s primary education? Please spread the word – we are happy to meet with them, take them for a tour of our wonderful school and discuss options.
