Prayer for July 4

Father of all nations and ages,

We recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of

nations;

for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still

remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples

to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may

share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.”

1 Corinthians 11:24

Three weeks ago, on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, the Archdiocese of Boston kicked off the Year of the Eucharist. The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Pope Francis celebrated Mass that day inside St. Peter’s Basilica. In his homily he spoke extensively about the Eucharist, the true presence of Jesus and how Jesus’ gift to us strengthens us and can transform our lives. Pope Francis stated that the Eucharist heals us of our wounds, emptiness and sadness, and gives us the strength to share Christ’s loving mercy with others.

This coming year as we acknowledge and celebrate Jesus’ gift of Himself to us in the Eucharist let us also be transformed by this selfless gift. Pope Francis said, “This is the strength of the Eucharist, which transforms us into bringers of God, bringers of joy, not negativity.”

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or if you would like to join with your fellow parishioners in becoming a Missionary of the Eucharist. My email is [email protected].

God bless you and your loved ones. Be safe!

Deacon Bob

SUSTAINING MUSIC MINISTRYTo those of you who are joining us in person, first and foremost welcome back, and welcome home. It is great to see those of you that made the decision to return to the liturgy for the first time in months. Thank you for doing so in as responsible a manner as possible – maintain a safe distance, washing hands and using hand sanitizer judiciously, keeping masks on (and covering both your mouth and nose), and all other precautions necessary to mitigate the risk of transmitting and contracting the coronavirus. A special thanks to those who helped disinfect pews, doors, and other surfaces between Masses. We appreciate your help and cooperation in transitioning back into operation as a parish.

To those of you participating in the Mass from home via the online resources, thank you as well. Your decision to delay returning to parish activity keeps manageable the strain of balancing both the restrictions of public health guidelines and being available for the Sacrament. We are committed to continue providing these resources – broadcast Masses via YouTube, as well as online print resources such as a worship aid and bulletin – for as long as the need persists. We hope to see you back, too, but appreciate and respect your decision to do so at a later time.As many of you know, the archdiocesan guidelines regarding music in the liturgy are unprecedented. Because the virus is spread through droplets contained in the air we breathe out (and in), singing proposes a vastly higher risk than speaking – singing projects the voice, and with it, the breath, over a larger area and with a greater density. Therefore, the role of music and the participation of the assembly has been turned upside down. “[F]ull and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else…”, as set out in the

Constitution of Sacred Liturgy, has been suspended (and rightly so) in the light of current awareness that the health and safety of the people of the Church is an undisputable priority. As such, choral and congregational singing has been suspended, and the vocal music of a soloist and psalmist is severely limited in this current environment. When and how these restrictions may be lifted is something about which I hope and pray constantly. I am saddened for this loss of richness in how we celebrate the Mass. At the same time, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the Liturgy in its current state as an alternative to not celebrating the Liturgy at all.

So in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, music ministry at Incarnation is taking this opportunity to focus on instrumental music. Stringed and percussion instruments are particularly worth encouraging at this point, as they do not rely on the human breath for production. I am reaching out to our instrumentalists that regularly assist at Mass already, but want to make sure those instrumental musicians not currently engaged in music ministry know – this is a call for you. We often put calls out for increased participation in the choir, and we rely on our cantors to lead our sung participation at all of our Liturgies, but now the focus is on you, instrumentalists of the parish. This is an opportunity for your gifts and talents to be seen and shared with the parish community to a greater extent than ever before. If you are a musician of high school age or older and are willing to help assist your parish community in worship at any of

our Masses, please email or call the parish office. We’d love to hear from you, and we’d love to hear you.

THE 14TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

JULY 5, 2020

Go GentleIn the Gospel this week, how beautiful Jesus words are, and yet so hard to trust.

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy,

and my burden light.

What a great comfort these promises are. There is a place to go to when death or loss or suffering descend upon us.

Another very honest viewpoint is given by Dylan Thomas, the poet, who was in no way wiser than Jesus, but nevertheless deserves to be heard. He wrote this to his dying father:

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.*

Rage is quite different from the ease that Jesus promises. And in his great poem, “Fern Hill,” the same poet says,

Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means, Time held me green and dying Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

Dylan Thomas was a raggedy man, who, if rumor is true, drank himself to the death he dreaded. He loved his youth and sang glad song to it, but death always stood waiting, and it did not offer relief to

the chains it wrapped around him.

What about Jesus? He said that his yoke was easy yet he went through torture and death. How can this be?

Here is an approach. Maybe labor and burdens are not meant to be erased from our lives, not erased or thrown away, but instead are meant to be pathways to a solid ground far underneath our troubles, into a quiet grounding that is

real stillness and rest. What rich earth would that be?

Jesus says it is meekness and humility of heart.

In the desert he had already told the devil that the only food he needed was “every word that

proceeds from the mouth of God.” Maybe the only real goods in life are those rooted in the love that is God and in the meekness and humility that are Jesus’ life.

“Watch me,” Jesus says. “I am meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the

foal of an ass (First Reading). Or in other words,

Watch me on the sad height of Calvary and see. I have let it all go—belongings, beloveds, reputation, everything. One thing remains. In it I find my rest. Make it your life, whatever your sorrow, whatever act of living and dying and being burdened you have, and it will not be heavy. Make it the center of your life and your burden will be light too.

Love.

Love of God and neighbor.

If you can begin to let go into the arms of the Great Love, if you can give your life away instead of raging, you will know rest from your burdens. You will see how death is the ultimate act of giving yourself away, as Jesus did in the midst of his burdens. Meek and humble of heart, he is, not proud and above it all.

Take your troubles and hand them gratefully to the One who can give you rest.

John Foley, SJ________

Fr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.

* Do Not Go Gentle

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas
